(The New York Times)   Will science get cool again on our pale blue dot? Will Fox News air a creationism rebuttal afterward? Will Neil deGrasse Tyson break out into "Dancin' on The Ceiling"? This is your official Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey discussion thread. --9pm EDT--   (nytimes.com) divider line 413

Hey subby,

media.tumblr.com

/was wondering if this would get a discussion thread

If you make people think they're thinking, they will love you.

If you actually make people think, they'll hate you.

This thread will be like a Tuesday Science Channel thread, but with more than two people.

2014-03-09 07:01:10 PM
I hope it doesn't have an hour of NDT riding around in a stupid looking spaceship.

2014-03-09 07:04:50 PM
No need for a rebuttal. I'm guessing the fundie crowd will be jamming channel change buttons the instant Obama pops up for the intro. Is it weird that this is the most excited I've been for a TV show since Fringe?

2014-03-09 07:18:00 PM
Let the NDT cocksucking begin. Have at it, boys.

2014-03-09 07:29:52 PM
It's too bad it's on at different times for different time zones, it's on two hours later for me.

2014-03-09 07:30:06 PM
I don't know why, but I'm really looking forward to this.

Is this where they discuss the legends of the beginning of the world in some dusty soup which spilled out from an egg that god bought from the Cosmic Quikie Mart and broke when he was trying to shrink them down to fill Eve's ovaries with the hundred thousand eggs she would only use a few thousand of to begin the cycle of bringing about the the great crunch because some guy thought god didn't play dice while building a bridge to get back to Asgard to prove his fellow countryman wrong that god wasn't dead but in fact and instead of a bridge he built a bomb which can blow up the whole universe, but that's ok because this glowing blue guy will see it's going to happen, happen, not going to happen, a giant octopus space monster tells him that the whole world will be happy if he kills JFK and becomes the first black president?

Been waiting 34 years for this.

John Buck 41: Let the NDT cocksucking begin. Have at it, boys.

What about Pluto?  If he mentions Pluto drink.  If he mentions billions: large sip.

2014-03-09 08:30:29 PM
I've seen an advance copy. It was pretty good, but the 45 minutes of giraffes f*cking seemed a bit much.

2014-03-09 08:31:04 PM
SO EXCITED!!!

2014-03-09 08:31:12 PM
I mean not enough.

Frakkin' brilliant!
That's like Alinsky's dedication in "Rules for Radicals".  "To Lucifer" - easy way to keep the theocratic-fascists out.

/Too bad the religious nutjobs still follow Alinsky's playbook.

Can't wait to hear how Degrasse Tyson says "billions and billions" as well as "nebula"

Woo! I was hoping this would get a discussion thread. Loved the original series as a kid.

They were replaying it all day today on nat geo and I totally geeked out watching it again.

Spoiler alert: the universe is created, leading to apple pie.

ecmoRandomNumbers: I never thought I'd have to break out the ignore list in a Cosmos thread. Christ.

That's such a typically circlejerking thing to say.

Besides NDGT is almost as smug as Sagan and who needs to waste time watching that?

Pluto not a planet?

Fark you.

Ooops, changed idea's mid-post. Somehow it still works...

I'm pretty excited, I watched the original series again this weekend. I don't think NDT will be able to match the sheer poetry of Sagan but I am looking forward to him actually pronouncing the H in human.

I'm secretly hoping that at some point the Insane Clown Posse will be on and Neil will explain to them like Kindergarteners exactly how magnets work.

I also heard he's trolling Gravity on Twitter and it's billions and billions of hilarious .

Wait, is that a modified version of Boba Fett's ship?

I'm expecting several of those types of moments.
