They don't do that because of how Americans behave, they do it because Americans are targeted more often for kidnapping or attacks in unfriendly countries.  If anything, it's a response to US public policy, not how our tourists act while on vacation.

They are angry.

Because they have no self identity. Canadians do not get to just 'be Canadian'. Everything they are is constantly compared to Americans.

So their identity becomes that of "well.... we aren't Americans.." followed by whatever half-baked theory they have about what makes them better than and separate from the Americans.

Basically, it boils down to "Marsha, Marsha Marsha!"

Down here in South Florida, I have lost good working relationships with partners because I disinclined to work with  Quebecois.

Nasty, self important.  Don't speak the language well, and don't care to be understood.  Infuriating.  I really hope this is not how locals in other places feel about Americans, because I definitely want to kill most of these idiots.

Blue and white Quebec tag?  Going to be driving either too fast or too slow.  Going to get in your way.  Going to be speaking French loudly or bad English loudly.  Don't give a F about anything except for what they are doing.  Don't pay attention to anything about them.

Most of the ones I run into down here have third and fourth homes and s-tones of money.  Not sure what they do for a living, but there are Enclaves of them here.  And I do hate them.

You don't even understand the half of the hatred towards America that exists in Canada.

The day after the September 11th attacks, everywhere people were saying like "fark those Americans" and "they deserved to die" and "that's what they get for being American".  Everyone, whether they were white rich people or poor minorities, truly jumped for joy after 9/11.  They just stopped short of burning flags in the streets.

What a load of crap.

Why would I lie about this?  It was one of the most depressing moments of my country.  Do you really think it is not possible?  Have you not heard the things said about Indians in Pakistan, or Jews in Nazi Germany?  What exactly is difficult for you to believe?

I was just trying to apologize for my country, to show you how truly ignorant the common conversation can be.  But I guess ignorance runs both ways.

You don't need to apologize for the country, there's no need to. If anything, just apologize for the people you hang around with.

I think every nation has jack-hole tourists. But I also think that every nation has pleasant and well-meaning tourists.

The article even states that the negative attitudes of Canadians are in places where you're likely to see a lot of Canadians. Well duh. If there a million Canadian tourists that come to your city then you're bound to have a handful of jackasses thrown in the mix.

I wouldn't be surprised.  I also wouldn't be surprised if they were residents of Ontario or Quebec, which are far more tightly tied to the US, in many ways.  If an Albertan acted like that, his compatriots would shut him up and board check him later.

For my .02 cents, I work at a resort the survives on the tourists. I have to say that there are Canadians and then those from Quebec. It's easy to tell the difference. Those from Quebec are farkin assholes. Everyone else from north of the border is fine. Our staff cringes when they know the Quebecs are around. The only people we found comparable to them are people from NYC, I think their motto is "I'm going to screw you before you screw me."

Drunk visiting Massholes are worse, in my experience. I once saw a guy here (South Dakota) from MA yell obscenities across the street at a guy who was wearing a Yankees cap. The guy in the Yankees cap was also in a wheelchair and mentally handicapped.
The rest of my experiences with these types is as tourists in the black hills. Pushy, loud jackasses.

Maybe the accent just stands out, but it's just obnoxious and annoying. Relax, man. You're on vacation.

Maybe because it seems a little far fetched given the general Canadian reaction to 9-11? I'm from the east coast and Newfoundland alone welcomed thousands of flight loads of (mostly) American travellers into their homes on 9/11. I stood in a dorm common room with tons of people absolutely horrified. Profs and students all over where shocked, NO one said anything, ever, about Americans deserving it. There were 9/11 memorial services in many places in Canada afterwards, and on the one year anniversary.

In fact, in all of the years since I have only heard one person, in person, saying that the Americans deserved it, and I wanted to punch the guy in the mouth for it.

Boo_Guy: I've seen it said before that Canadians are bad tippers,  the only ways I can offer an explanation on that is;
1) We pay everyone here pretty well,  servers and waitstaff are up to 6 or 7-some dollars an hour plus tips in Ontario,  regular minimum is at least 11-something an hour last time I looked.

And 2)  People here don't expect tips all over the place for doing their jobs,  might have to do with number 1).  Maybe some forget that other places don't pay as well when they're outside Canada.

As for the other things,  drunkest,  yea I could see that,  most arrogant,  maybe if they're Quebecors.

/sorry eh

In Canada, we give tips as  tips, as a reward for exemplary service, not as a mandatory surcharge.  The downside is that waiters get pissed.  The upside is that your average Canadian Tire or Tim Hortons store clerk is more likely to get tipped for making you laugh or carrying stuff to your car.

I'm pretty sure that when Canadian males under age 30 go to Mexico and the Caribbean, they treat it like one big frat party. You go to get drunk and laid. I'm not excusing the behaviour just explaining it.

Also, as a Canadian I have never worn a Canadian flag when traveling. Ever. Who needs to know that?

"The damned 3rd division has now been inflicted on us," reads a 1941 letter from a woman in Surrey, describing the arrival of the Canadian infantry division that would eventually go on to capture Juno Beach.
On Christmas Eve, 1941, the Canadians, she reported, "were rolling along in the middle of the road till all hours yelling at the top of their voices, the dead drunk being dragged along by the not so drunk."

It was war.  Who farking cares how drunk they were?  They were going off to die to save your uptight British ass from Gerry you stupid coont.

Eh, some Canadians are dicks, some Americans are well behaved, and Canadians are over-proud of their country about as often as Americans are. It's just that Canadians get a pass due to their higher profile neighbors. Americans are easy to hate. Canadians are nationally passive-aggressive.
