This is amusing because when I was a kid they taught us in school that "experts" said the world was cooling and we were running out of oil.  That by 1985 there would be no more V8 engines and by the year 2000 there would be no gasoline powered engines on earth.  Since the world was cooling and we were essentially out of oil, we wouldn't be able to heat our homes and the world's population would have to move to the equators to survive.

I genuinely suffered a great deal of anxiety and stress over this expected collapse of human society as a result of climate change.  When I tried to talk to adults about this they just we'll be fine, don't worry.

Yet today there are morons who claim that the "experts" never claimed the earth was cooling.  But they did, it caused just as much stress and there was NO discussion of a world that was heating up.

Not really.

I'm sure Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, or Aventis has a specific treatment for it, too.

I have coined the term "Psychophiliac Dependency Disorder" to describe the mental condition present that causes people to erroneously believe that psychologists have anything useful to say about human functioning.

2014-03-09 06:03:16 PM
Speaking as a psychologist, I'd like to point something out:

Solastalgia is a neologism coined by an Australian; The philosopher named Glenn Albrecht in 2003 with the first article published on this concept in 2005.

Leave us out of this. We do enough stupid stuff without getting blamed for philosophers' stupid stuff as well.

The planet's biggest reinsurers have been tracking climate change for decades, and your premiums are starting to seriously reflect this. Not that I didn't accept the broad premises of climate change to start with, but reinsurers are the people who eventually cough up when land is unexpectedly flooded or crops are lost to drought. They don't have to believe anything. They just have to effectively price the cost of doing business and keeping a prudent profit margin.

2014-03-09 06:09:19 PM
Yes, because being distressed because your home or community was actually destroyed is totally the same the thing as a mental illness about overreacting to potential climate change.

Doesn't "existential angst" cover pretty much every apocalyptic anxiety, up to and including climate collapse?

NFA: This is amusing because when I was a kid they taught us in school that "experts" said the world was cooling and we were running out of oil.

We WERE running out of oil -- then-current levels. But since then we've found more, and technology has improved such that we can now access previously impossible-to-reach sources of oil. Oil is fricken everywhere. The problem now isn't that we'll run out of oil (even though we will eventually). The problem is that we'll burn the Earth to a crisp long before that happens.

Nobody seriously entertained the idea that the Earth was cooling. That was something someone may have told you one time and the Time Magazine cover was a hoax. Stop being stupid.

Idiots, usually the most clever rhetoricians of each generation [including priests and academics], have been predicting the end for thousands of years.

Global warming, because really, how can humans not be responsible for something that's been happening for tens of thousands of years?!

Full of shiat, you are.
It was a real Time cover.
And no matter the reality, if someone is feeling anxiety over something, that something is effectively real in his mind. In other words, belief becomes reality.
Amazing how that works, eh?

What global warming?

"A 15-year hiatus in warming"
IPCC 5th Assessment Report

I realize it is too much to expect for libtards to understand that "hiatus" means "isn't happening", and I also realize that Chicken Little's cosmology is shattered if he admits that he had his head up his ass.

Interglacial warming cycles don't happen this fast. They change over thousands of years. We've seen far more changes in less than 100.

So something else is causing it.

Actually hiatus means break.
Climate change is real and it's warming.
There's nothing we can do to stop it.

Chesapeake Bay was formed when glacial meltwater raised sea levels to the point where the continental shelves, which used to be beaches, flooded and the water has come right up the Susquehanna River Valley (which is technically called a ria, a drowned river valley open to the sea).
Enjoy the crabs and boating and fishing!
And thank interglacial warming them.

Ishkur: Nobody seriously entertained the idea that the Earth was cooling. That was something someone may have told you one time and the Time Magazine cover was a hoax. Stop being stupid.

The TIME magazine thing was certainly a hoax, but the theory that a new ice age was coming was not.  A little searching with Google Books will find you gems like these:

LIFE Magazine, Nov 14, 1960: "Today the Arctic ice is melting.  If Ewing and Donn are correct, the Arctic will, in future years, again be an open sea.  Evaporation will begin and with it the great snowfalls that will herald a new ice age."

Popular Science, May 1969: "New scientific research says that car exhausts, industrial air pollution, and jet contrails could be altering the earth's climate and may be bringing us into a new ice age."

New York Magazine, Jan 31, 1977: "If the Arctic region continues its cooling trend, it could be enough, some climate watchers feel, to trigger a new ice age, with glaciers covering much of Europe, the Soviet Union, Anada, and the northern third of the United States."

Kiplinger's Personal Finance, Oct 1975: "The recent decades of fairly reliable sunshine and rain are probably a brief respite in the Little Ice Age.  The global cooling trend, their argument goes, is an early warning auguring the return of poor and unpredictable weather with crop failures and mass starvation."

You get the idea.  Search the archives and you'll find that the press was indeed talking about the coming ice age, much in the same way it is now talking about global warming.

Like NFA, I grew up scared by news reports that OIL WAS GOING TO DISAPPEAR BY 1985 AND WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!!  As a kid, I remember being terrified that the world was going to turn into Mad Max, and having no idea what to do about it.  Soooo, where's my check for my anxiety and suffering and probably PTSD too?

^This, and also: if anything, we're in a cooling part of the natural cycle. We're not just heating the planet, we're heating it despite a natural trend in the opposite direction.

I do admire the effort that some people put into being willfully ignorant, though. It must get tiring.

Moving the goalposts.  Your original objection was "Nobody seriously entertained the idea that the Earth was cooling. That was something someone may have told you one time and the Time magazine article was a hoax."

The links I posted show that people did seriously entertain the idea that the Earth was cooling.  It was more than simply something that someone may have told you that one time.  Lists like this one and this one shows that the national discourse was abuzz with New Ice Age discussion, and that it was more than just something NFA may have heard from some guy this one time as you claimed.

And for the record, TIME may not have made it a cover story, but it did have a "New Ice Age" article in its June 24, 1974 issue.

Youngsters don't remember the great new ice age scare of the 70s, and libtards oldies refuse to admit it was a real thing, the same way they just can't admit there was a medieval warm period.

I remember Pat Buchanan laughing at the Chicken Littles back then with their talk of the evil contrails and wanting to COVER THE TUNDRA IN BLACK PLASTIC.

And you assess that on the basis of your understanding of the planet's composition and atmospheric mechanics better than them? .....if so, why don't you write a paper about it explaining how they're wrong? If you can do that, there's a Nobel Prize in it for ya.

Valiente: The planet's biggest reinsurers have been tracking climate change for decades, and your premiums are starting to seriously reflect this.

Actually, what happens is they value their service to be slightly above what their models say could happen. Then they find out their models were grossly wrong and raise rates. They've been hit by model error so many times they've learned they were suckers before and are going to be suckers again, and price accordingly. Someone out there has the reinsurance for Tokyo, and it will be destroyed at some point in the future. And we're already paying for it as our insurance buys reinsurance in a global pool.

Anthropogenic global warming is now the party line, politically popular in academia, and anyone who wants a science "career" has to play along. There's no money in seeing the obvious.
It's too simple.

HotIgneous Intruder: Anthropogenic global warming is now the party line, politically popular in academia, and anyone who wants a science "career" has to play along.

Are you crazy? Scientists LOVE proving other scientists wrong. They are the most stuck up, proud intellectual snobs you'll ever meet. There's nothing they love more than completely overturning the whole system. That's what science lives for -- discovering something new that changes everything we thought about how something works. There's no "party line" in science. It's not driven by authorities, it's driven by evidence. If you want to overturn AGW, go right ahead. But you gotta do the science, and it must stand up to scrutiny.

HotIgneous Intruder: There's no money in seeing the obvious.

Actually, there's MORE money in rejecting climate change than there is in supporting it. There are a lot of energy companies in the world with a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. The science on AGW hurts their profit margins, and they produce bogus studies from time to time muddying the debate, the way the tobacco industry did it for 50 years.

But most scientists aren't driven by money, they're driven by the pursuit of facts. While the money and power and influence can come from many sources, ultimately the facts stand or fall on their own merits.
