yeah, they'd lose their hero and Obama would have gotten rid of Putin without having to start a war.  that would really chap their ass.

While I certainly don't want a destabilized Russia, if that happens, I want a shirtless Obama to ride a horse through the Rose Garden.

Putin is a dictator, and dictators don't lose "elections"

WTF Indeed: Putin is a dictator, and dictators don't lose "elections"

Dictators commit suicide by shooting themselves in the back of the head three times and throwing themselves into a river.

WTF Indeed: Putin is a dictator, and dictators don't lose "elections"

They do in kleptocracies when the richest motherfarkers in the country lose a lot of money because of their grandstanding. Russia isn't North Korea, or the totalitarianism of the USSR. It's just a corrupt state with a lot of legal bullshiat backed by a strongman who isn't nearly as invincible as he'd like to be perceived.

2014-03-09 05:43:00 PM
Wasn't there some rumor that Putin has been starting to act out of it and erratically? Could an age disease brought on earlier than usually expected be getting to him? What are the chances of a guy of his age developing age related mental problems?

2014-03-09 05:43:20 PM
If you want to hurt Putin you got to hurt the oligarchs who are afraid of him enough to act. Freeze accounts, keep visa requirements in place. Wean Europe off the products that generate skim profits.

2014-03-09 05:43:23 PM
Putin's biggest mistake in all of this has been underestimating the impact it would all have on his cronies' financial interests.

I doubt he'll be the victim of 5 self-inflicted shots to the head, but rest assured that plans are being drawn up by those with significant financial means to remove him.

You could probably make the case that in the context of modern Russia, a person doesn't rise to power without having some form of mental illness. Maybe it's finally catching up to him.

When poisoning people with polonium is part of your campaign strategy, you've probably got a personality disorder of some kind.

The idea that this invasion was an act of desperation and not some kind of victory for Putin should have been clear from the start.

President Romney would have engineered a leveraged buyout of Ukraine then split it into pieces and sold them off to the highest bidder.

This is beautiful.

Everything is so integrated now and all currencies are fiat that if a country does something heinous, it is quite easy for the rest of the world to devalue their money supply and bankrupt them.

That's a pretty clever war deterrent.

Yup. I read an excellent article a few years back that pointed out why the Kremlin tends to stay extremely strong and influential even when the vast majority of Russian people are miserably poor. They care more about security and external threats than GDP/prosperity. National events that would cause huge political fallout in the US or UK have no effect in Russia. Putin is loved because he doesn't give a shiat about the economy, and is pushing to rebuild the Soviet Union.

In fact:

"Putin cares for the economy, but he cares more for the greatness of Russia and regional influence," Ganske said. "As a former spy, Putin has this grand-Russia idea in his head and he just doesn't accept that Russia's importance in the geopolitical context has decreased. Putin doesn't like the idea of Ukraine moving further away from Russia and becoming part of the EU at some stage, let alone NATO."

I've seen the "Putin Strongman" posts from GOP friends of mine on Facebook.

It further cements my belief that the modern GOP has far outstripped the Democrats in their appeals to "Cult of Personality". All it takes is a photoshopped picture of Putin riding a bear, and these people collectively jizz their pants.

The modern GOP voter has all of the trademarks of an authoritarian streak, despite the incessant screeching about freedom.

I agree for the most part. I suppose it's a matter of degree, and incumbent upon us as humans to set the proper tone so the least evil people pursue power.

I imagine Icelandic politics requires a little less dehumanization of the opponent than Russian politics.

I think everyone is too optimist.

The separatists will "win" the referendum because, as someone said, Putin does not loose elections.

Then Diplomacy will do its thing and Russia will get Crimea (maybe Russia will erase part of Ukraine's debt) and Putin will stay in power. I really don't see NATO going directly against Russia for Crimea.

Yea, Putin will go when he wants to go or he has a really, really big farkup. You think Putin couldn't come up or already have a plan on how to help his friends make back that money anyways? Not that Putin would fear any Russian businessman.

He might not have a choice. Remember, a lot of his power comes from the support of wealthy Russians, and his little stunt in Crimea cost them a good amount of money.

And ex-KGB or no, you don't want to piss off wealthy Russian businessmen.

We're well past the Nation/war phase of global development.  Coca Cola is sold in just about every country and war is bad for their business, it disrupts supply lines, kills customers, and increases borrowing costs.  Now that corporations run the world, conventional wars are pointless.  We're moving to a William Gibson reality of corporate assassinations and data theft.

wait.....when did the tea/gop party start liking putin? I get that they think obama is a wimp. Hell, he is a little too metrosextual for my liking, but is that being translating into liking putin or are they actually saying they prefer putin over obama?

The average Russian soldier is not going to shoot Ukranians. Ethnic Tatars, maybe, but not ethnic Ukranians and Russians. This is why there has been so little violence so far.
