(The Almagest)   Apparently Earth has a "plasma shield" which protects us from solar storms. Awww Yeah....suck it,.....uh......high energy solar activity   (thealmagest.com) divider line 28

Who the heck wrote that article? Meow said the dog? Seriously, that was borderline illiterate, and the author obviously didn't have a frigging clue what they were talking about. Hell, I'm a farking astronomer who actually knows what the Earth's magnetic field is for and even I am not exactly sure what the hell they we're babbling about.

Destructor: Rediscover the Van Allen Radiation Belt? Was it missing?

This is science reporting, I think it's not that hard to work out what happened:

Physicist discovers new thing, thinks its cool.

University hasn't issued a press release for a while and they have a media quota, so they pull his name from the hat.

Physicist starts to describe cool new thing to journalist.

Since Journalists are scientifically, culturally, and sometimes borderline functionally illiterate, interviewer is like "woah woah back up".

Not missing a beat (because most scientists have to teach undergrads so they're used to dumb questions and patiently answering them), physicist smoothly transitions into giving the poor moronjournalism major all of the background he needs to understand why the new thing is awesome.

Being a moron by both nature and training, the journalist phases out halfway through, because actual learnin' n' shiat is poison to the kinds of people that take degrees in journalism.

Result: article that's really, really excited about old news, actual cool new discovery lost entirely in the translation.

Expect your aunt to show up in a tinfoil hat to protect her brainwaves from solar storms any day now.

Oh, I'm afraid our plasma shield will be quite operational when your pathetic band of Martians arrive.

If I read the article correctly, it's like a pair of giant hotpads circling the earth?

Highlander 2 is NOT reference material for your crappy science!

This is why I had to get out of journalism.  I wasn't scientifically illiterate and was pulling my hair out each time.

That article read like "Jimmy James: Macho Business Donkey Wrestler."

If by "plasma" you mean "magnetic" then yes, we do.

/ Not only is it nice to have, you wouldn't be here if it didn't exist.

I browsed a few of the articles; they're all like that, including this little gem from an article about smoking-related diseases in China...

The country is world's most populated nation in the world...

They all read like some Chinese middle-school science reports written ten minutes before class and then run through Google Translate.
