This country is over ran with those Irish bastards!

Ladies and gentlemen, what you are seeing is a total disregard for the things St. Patrick's Day stand for. All this drinking, violence, destruction of property. Are these the things we think of when we think of the Irish?

Ah, my alma mater, it wasn't a real party until the riot police showed up.

/Which happened quite frequently

I'm surprised they didn't call it "St. Blacktricks Day" so they could use all the leftover costumes from MLK Day.

UIUC Unofficial is a huge blowout, but it doesn't typically turn violent. It's mostly just 30,000 people getting wasted together and being obnoxious. Sure, plenty of alcohol arrests and some small crap, but nothing like that. A couple students die stupidly each year, but to quote The Stand, "No great loss."

Now, old school UIUC Halloween through the eighties, arson, violence and vandalism out the ads. The three local pd's and sheriffs managed to finally stamp that out in the early nineties.

No arrests at any of my St. Patrick's Day parties, and that's my birthday as well! Woohoo!

(Le sigh, I'm gonna be 33 on the 17th. I'm gonna be ancient!)

College kids will take any day normally devoted to excessive drinking, up the alcohol level by a factor of eleventy, and then show off their GEDs in law from Entitlement U when the cops arrive.

This is not new.

LantisEscudo: The local press is reporting 73, not 43.

That's what I read, as well. I thought 43 sounded low for Townhouses/Puffton Village.

empres77: Why is this holiday being celebrated the weekend before the weekend before the holiday?

Because next weekend most dorm kids won't be there. Spring Break. Woo.

I went back out for the weekend to visit a few kids who were a year behind me.  This thing wild. At least with Hobart Hoedown it was contained to one street and a field.  This was a a massive cat and mouse game between kids and police as to where the next congregation would began effectively turning the whole town into masses of drunk blaced out college kids. And yeah the 43 arrests was like the 11 a.m. count or something.  Best part was seeing the tours of accepted students walking through, looks on the parents faces was priceless.

FTA:
"Another 28 people were issued summonses since violence broke out on Saturday morning during an annual party known as the "Barney Blowout," near the University of Massachusetts, Amherst."

Am I the only one appalled that they called it the Barney Blowout and not the Blarney Blowout?

It seems like St. Patrick's Day starts earlier and earlier every year.

No, wait. I'm thinking of Christmas.

And Easter.

And St. Valentine's Day.

And Halloween ....

Not to sound old, but back in *my* day all we had was the Hobart Hoedown and that's the way we liked it!

It is the "Blarney Blowout."

Blame autocorrect?

I believe the arrests were only at 43 because the local police departments didn't have enough man-power to do much more than disperse the parties and hurry to the next one.

Unofficial was last friday, but it was the mellowest I've seen since I moved here in 2007 (haven't observed it since 2011).

For what it's worth, 2 students have died in the last 8 years or so, and I think it's only like 3 total. Not a couple a year. Unfortunately last year I think it wasn't even "die stupidly", it was a sober non-reveler who got hit by a stupid drunk driver who survived :(

The two before that were some time around 2005-2007 when a drunk girl got on the back of her drunk boyfriend's motorcycle.  They wrecked and died.
