I got confused and accepted them as my Lord and Savior. Now my communion wafers taste like sneakers.

They did well last year and very well so far this year so they look legit.

The only downside is they don't have a big expensive football program with TV deal so obviously they're pretenders.

I'm still in shock.

I don't, but then again, I do, but then again, I don't.  Here's why:

I watch a ton of college basketball, it's my game.  From what I've seen, and I've watched every team that's in the championship conversation more than once, no one really has the look of a champion except for Florida and maybe Arizona.  Wichita State hasn't played anyone of note unless you count Tennessee (meh), BYU (meh), Alabama (meh squared), and a horribly overrated St. Louis team that will lose it's fourth straight game when UMass beats them tomorrow.  The rest of their schedule is not just kind of weak, but REALLY weak.  With Creighton leaving the MVC for the Big East, and the usual also-rans in the conference not doing so hot even by their standards, there's just no competition left.  It's not exactly great preparation when they'll play a team in the round of 32 that's better than anyone they've played all season.

Ah, but here's the conundrum.  Winning 33 straight is really damn hard.  They've won most of those games in pretty easy fashion too.  Despite feasting on a very very weak slate of opponents, they're actually very good.  Plus, they were in the Final Four just last year, so they're not afraid of the bright lights, big stage, cliche cliche, blah blah blah.  No one else (save Florida and maybe Arizona as noted above) seems capable of winning six straight games in March and April, why not them?  Butler made back to back championship games, right?

That said, like I said, they will face a good team in the round of 32, a team better than anyone they've seen all year, a team that just played and beat another competitive team (8/9 game).  While I think they win that game, if the seeds hold in their bracket, they'll then see a 4 or possibly a 5 in the Sweet Sixteen and possibly a 2 in the Elite Eight.  Now granted seeds must hold, but when a revised bracket puts Kansas as the 2 seed in their bracket, as just happened today, do you think Wichita State can beat a Kansas?  Duke?  Wisconsin?  I'm going with no... I think... maybe.  I don't think they'll be affected by the pressure of being a mid-major with a 1 seed, I do think they'll get killed with size and speed at some point and get erased.

Why yes, I am watching college basketball right now, how did you know?

I do look forward to more of this in the tourney, though:

On an unrelated note, I'd like Austin Peay to make the tourney soon so we can be regaled with "Let's go Peay!" chants.

Left to right --
"Room 103. Be there, and don't bother trying to call me tomorrow.  And bring that camera"
"That jumper is probably worth at least a 3rd round pick; maybe I'll follow HIM to class tomorrow."
"So much for the big feet theory.  Now everybody is laughing at me."

When they play their first real opponent in the round of 8 we will let you know. You don't judge the Harlem globetrotters based on their play against the Generals.

Didn't they make the final Four last year? They went to the final four last season, and now they 32-0. Sure, there conference is weaker, but honestly, it's not like the team doesn't have the experience.

When Turgeon was at WSU, my parents went to the Sweet 16 game in DC. Before they left, I called my mother and told her that under no circumstances was she to make that hand signal. She thought it meant "W." The fact that I refused to explain beyond "just... don't do it." was enough for her

That's the thing that gets me.  Louisville's schedule is just as bad and, if they were undefeated, all we'd be hearing about is how the reigning national champions are the favorites to win it all yet again.

The way I see it, the Shockers are just like Boise State in football.  They beat down a weaker schedule (only 7 games decided by single-digits this year and only 1 decided by fewer than five points - Florida has 13 single-digit wins and two losses) but sill don't get much respect.  Last year's Final Four was their 2007 Fiesta Bowl, but thankfully more than two teams get into the NCAA Tournament, so they'll be able prove it on the court instead of having to play in some second-tier tournament.

Two of the most forgettable NCGs in modern tournament history. That Butler-UConn tilt set college basketball back decades.

...53-41 and panned as one of the worst

If you're calling a national championship game decided on a buzzer-beating three-point attempt "forgettable," then I think it's your memory that has problems, not Butler basketball.

Exactly. People get way too caught up in the name on the front of the jersey and the phrase "mid-major". And while there are some other very good teams out there, there is no clear cut dominant team.

So of course Wichita State is a legitimate title contender - there's no evidence to say that they are not. The better question is if they should be the favorite going into the tournament.

Aren't you thinking of the previous championship game between Butler and Duke?

Considering that Duke did not win the 2010 NCG on a buzzer-beating 3, but by managing to hold off Scrappy Doo in the second half, I'd say that that counts as "eminently forgettable" since the result was forgotten by you. The 2011 game was a suckfest that was punishment for our sins or something.

Yeah, but OP said both sucked.  Actually, only one sucked.  Well, the other one was won by Duke, so in a way, both sucked for different reasons.

It seems like the last few title games have all been 80's super bowlesque.  The last good one was, what, 2008?

ONE of the most forgettable.  Despite who emerged as victor, the first one against Duke was outstanding, don't kid yourself.  The UConn one was one of the worst games I've ever seen, national title game or not, I won't dispute that.

No.  But unlike mid-major undefeateds in college football, they will get a chance to prove people wrong.

Thank you for my first daylight savings time laugh. The wife cracked up also.
I could not explain that one to my mom either.
