The South isn't about Conservatism. It is about maintaining an autocratic hold over the poor and middle classes. Why is racism so strong there? The wealthy convinced the poor whites that while they were poor, at least they weren't black. And a black person is less than a white person -even if that black person were rich an the white person were poor.

If the poor and middle classes ever figure this out, they may have their own little civil war down the line.

Look, every non-Southerner needs to know this.

The South sucks. NEVER EVER move to the south. Stay in the North and the West and don't move to the South. If you're in the South and you think Clifornia is a well managed place, you need to move there ASAP. You're clearly wasting your talent there.

We really need to reverse this migratory trend of non-Southerners moving into Southern states as most clearly never heard of how bad it is there.

They've been convinced that if they keep working 60 hour weeks and get rid of the minimum wage, they'll be wealthy before they know it. And then they'd have to pay taxes on the new wealth.

Ah yes, the thread where we get told for the umpteen billionth time we are backward and wrong. Go ahead, take your turn on the podium  explaining how much more enlightened the North and West is compared to us. Every single one of us is a racist, homophobic, Neanderthal. All it takes is one "y'all" and it's ok to deny us employment, business, or even common courtesy.

Meanwhile, Florida is about to overtake New York as the second most populated state. Two-thirds of the population isn't originally from Florida. The two worst things to happen to Florida ever were I-75 and I-95. Easily 2/3 of the Florida tag is owned by New York/New Jersey and Ohio/Michigan.

I appreciate the "let them secede" position. It should be a universal principle -- self-determination and all that.

But you should understand that, if secession were ever to become a realistic proposition, your liberal position on the secession question will be crushed like an insect. The control freaks in your party will tolerate no such dissent. They'll move in militarily at the drop of a hat, label you a traitor, and put a bullet in your head if you actually try to implement your beliefs.

But it's nice that you say you'd allow secession just the same, here at a time when it costs you nothing to say it.

Why should anyone who is not a wealthy white protestant straight male vote republican?

For the record, libtards, I'm not sure where HuffPo gets its maps, but blue state California has 14% of the country's population, but like 34% of its welfare recipients. And about 34% of the country's illegals. Hmm, there's an interesting correlation...

Alabama is a border state?

Really? That's the best you can do? There's also a lot of poor black people who vote 99% Dumbocrat in the South.

Yeah, and the politicians they elected sure have screwed the region up, huh?

All those democrats politicians elected by southern blacks.

You do realize that almost all poverty programs are set at the federal level, right? The ones we can't even reform slightly or the Dumbocrats screech about how the GOP wants to throw children into the streets?

Libs have subsidized poverty with trillions of dollars since 1965. And how did that "war" work out? Permanent poverty, i.e., Democrat voters. That's the funny part. Libs say Republicans don't care about the poor, but who benefits most from poor people? The DEMOCRAT Party. Believing the loyalists were strongest in the South and hoping to enlist the slaves in their cause--an objective that seems incompatible with a focus on Southern loyalists--the British turned their efforts to the South. In fact, the British had some important military successes in the South. They occupied Savannah, Georgia, in late 1778 and Charleston, South Carolina, in May 1779. They also struck a disastrous blow on General Horatio Gates' forces at Camden, South Carolina, in August 1780.

Believing loyalists were strongest in the south does not mean that they sided with the Brits.

NY state (outside NYC) has some of the cheapest real estate prices in the country (along with among the highest property taxes).  If you're not revolving around NYC in any way, shape, or form, no matter how big,  Albany does not give the smallest fark about your company, or the jobs it wants to bring.  There is one county just above NYC that received a billion $ incentive for a chip-building company to make a new factory there.  That's it.  There are commercials in the south right now advertising NY is "Open for business" (note: no taxes for 10 years, but in Year 11, you're screwed, or you'll just move out like everyone else does).  Anyway, the commercials are a big joke with southerners.

Settle an area where a very few families own 99 percent of the land and wealth, and the rest of the people are ignorant farmers and/or slaves. Wait 200 years and have a devastating war. Wait another 70 years before doing anything to improve the infrastructure, endemic poverty and widespread illiteracy. Wait another 30 years to eliminate discriminatory laws that institutionalize poverty among one-third of the population. Wait another 45 years, and what the hell? This part of the country still lags behind the rest of the country on measures of education, health and income disparity. Wonder how that could have happened?

The industries move here constantly. We provide what businesses need to operate. We have more modern port terminals, more miles of train track, more lanes on our highways, larger investments in higher education. You know, tax and spend stuff.

Conservatives wish to provide companies with what they want..... but, they don't collect enough revenue to first provide companies with what they need first.

If a lot more businesses could set up proper supply chains in the south, they would move there.

Michelin, BMW, Nissan, Toyota, Cisco, Honda, GM, Caterpillar, Volkswagen, etc., etc. think differently about your opinion.

I'm not so sure what the northeast is bragging about, since their workplace landscape is mainly service industry, and what's left of steel industry, auto assembly and that's about it.  Upstate NY has 53 counties, 43 of which have negative growth in the last 20 years, even with all of that Great Lakes access and available property.  Mario Cuomo told several automakers (Nissan, Saturn, Volkswagen) in the 1980's and early 1990's to go fark themselves when they were looking to build new plants there.  The north  wants poor people there (NY has some of the most liberal welfare programs available, throwing money at the poor left and right).  Detroit/MI?  You have Ann Arbor and Traverse City, the rest of the state is a wasteland.  Port access doesn't mean dick apparently in the Great Lakes states.  Must be something else keeping growth down since, oh, the 1970's there.

It's fun to give people from the south shiat because you can get a reaction, especially texans. But really we're all in this together brehs, it's great we can move and work freely across our whole country so you can find the spot you personally want to live regardless if it is "blue" or "red".

Why would they want anyone to be happy and healthy?  A happy person is less likely to go to church for social support.  A happy person is less likely to have unprotected sex as a teenager.  A happy person is likely to have fewer children.  Combine that with shaming and banning everything that could help someone out of their shiat hole life and you create an environment that pushes the hordes into church pews.

Don't worry, I have no intention of ever setting foot in your part of the country...( if you guys want to secede again, I'm OK with you leaving....it's not worth fighting over, IMHO)

Actually that's a lie. Anybody from North Carolina can attest to the fact that a shiat load of retired Floridians live there - and the locals ain't too happy about that.

Another article bashing the South? It's like all the people sniffing their own farts have some sort of inferiority complex and have to remind themselves of how superior they are.

In short the south sucks. Don't come here, we're fine with that.

Especially you ultra-liberals trying to escape the result of your political policies. We see more and more every day.

So what is "American" ancestry on that map?

Scotch-Irish. An archaic term the people themselves no longer use, seeing themselves simply as (true) Americans. Largely Protestants that settled what was, in the day, backcountry.

DubyaHater: Yes, the south sucks so bad, I hear northern accents everywhere I go in Virginia and North Carolina. It must be so horrible here that New Yorkers and their like move here in droves. When I lived in NC, most of my co-workers were from up north.

And every one of your coworkers always said how much better it was where they came from. I have a brother in law on Long Island that pays twelve grand a year in taxes. I have a similar home in NC and pay eighteen hundred.

Delay, you used the term 'fundamental Christian theocracy'. Don't use the term 'fundamental Christian theocracy'. Anyone who uses the term 'fundamental Christian theocracy' with a straight face is a farktard and/or lunatic.
