Saturn5: And yet, the influx of people moving here from the North East and West continues unabated.

Sure
Cheap land and property.
Cheap labor.

It is rational for people who are better off to take advantage of people who are worse off.
Purely from an economical point of view.

If I can save 10-30% on my retirement by moving south, it is a no brainer.
And it helps the economies of those that are worse off.

The creepiest part of these maps is that they all are red states.
Not enough poverty to vote the repressors out of power. Not yet.

Hollie Maea: Saturn5: And yet, the influx of people moving here from the North East and West continues unabated.

Eventually that will lift you guys out of it. But not until there are enough of them to outvote you guys.

If their areas are awesome because of their politics then why don't they just stay there instead of spreading their derp... errr I mean enlightened liberal politics?

cmb53208: I moved from the South in 1991 because things needed um, improvement.  However, one thing I discovered is that north of the Mason/Dixon line it's not all wine and roses.  For example here in Wisconsin our largest metropolitan area (Milwaukee) has such terrible race relations and segregation that it's probably the closest thing to South Africa in he Western world.  And our yokels and frightened suburbanites gave us Scott Walker on Election Day.  So yeah, the South's full of derp.  But we've got plenty up here as well.

Sure. The north continues to have segregation.
The argument is that over all, the north has done a slightly better job of reducing poverty, etc.

Probably the greatest tragedy of our times was that Brown v Board ended segregation without addressing school funding.  Something as simple as requiring that all public funding for public schools come from State and Federal funds and ban all funding from local sources.

We got the rich and middle moving out of the cities and taking their school funding with them.
If funding was roughly equal across the state, there would be less impetus to flee the cities.

Uneducated people will continue to be stuck in poverty.

SquiggsIN: Barbecue Bob: Denver here. Not North or South. Not east at all but not completely west.

The point is that we here can smoke pot legally and most of you cannot.

We win.

Suck it~!

It won't be exclusive to WA and CO in the next few years.  States are going to start falling like dominoes once they are surrounded neighbor states that their residents drive into to pay taxes on cannabis, have a meal, fill up on gas, and then return to their own non-cannabis approving states.

I cant wait to get one of those near chicago. The illinois medical pot laws are among the most draconian and useless in the nation.  FFS, why cant you grow your own medical pot? WHY the fark would your laws exclude that? Because people might use it recreationally? REALLY? You dont say.

If you want to achieve the American Dream, don't move to the South. That's because states in the South have extremely low levels of economic mobility.

Just because people that already live there don't move up for one reason or another doesn't mean that someone that moves there won't move up.

I'm not from the north east, but my guess is that it is because the weather sucks.

I live in a blue state, and needless to say, the politics isn't driving me away.

enry: Obviously these states aren't conservative enough.

Right, liberals don't want to enforce the border, and want to increase immigration by like 50% and give amnesty to illegals, and want to throw Sheriff Joe in jail for trying to do something about it, but it's a conservative policy problem that there are a bunch of poor Mexicans in border states.

For the record, libtards, I'm not sure where HuffPo gets its maps, but blue state California has 14% of the country's population, but like 34% of its welfare recipients. And about 34% of the country's illegals. Hmm, there's an interesting correlation...

One thing about Birmingham, it's one of the most racially progressive cities you'll ever see. Not to say it's not full of racists, because it is, but Birmingham has had race thrown its face for so long no one ignores it. In other cities, people just don't talk about it, like it's not there. Birmingham never has that problem.

The only thing the south has going for it is the weather.

Not so much. There have been great southern authors, such as Faulkner. Southern folks helped create the United States constitution.

LOL! Southern folks sided with the British during the Revolutionary War. They've had a hatred for the United States since the very beginning.

Why hasn't anyone challenged you? Most likely because they realize you are a lost cause.

Did you fail 4th grade a few times? That's the grade when you start learning about the revolutionary war. Social Studies IIRC is the name of that class. To say that the southern folks sided with the British is stupid.

I don't even need to argue with this moronic view. So, instead, I will say one thing that will automatically make me win the argument: citation needed. You said it you prove it.

TV's Vinnie: Headso: It's fun to give people from the south shiat because you can get a reaction, especially texans. But really we're all in this together brehs, it's great we can move and work freely across our whole country so you can find the spot you personally want to live regardless if it is "blue" or "red".

Tell that to the guys from Top Gear who bought an old clunker and drove it through the South with "NASCAR SUCKS" spray painted on the side. The Inbred Jeds who saw it were like a pack of crazed chimps.

Well, let's see, two of the people you just called "dipshiats" are 1) Rand Paul, an Ophthalmologist trained at Duke Medical School, and 2) Ted Cruz, a national-champion debater at Princeton, and a Harvard-trained lawyer who Professor Alan Dershowitz said, "was off-the-charts brilliant."

So perhaps you could tell us about your superior intellect and academic background, Sparky?

I mean, are any libertarians or conservatives allowed to run for office in your open-minded liberal world view? Or just people with whom you agree, and everyone else is a "dipshiat?"

So what is "American" ancestry on that map?

Scotch-Irish. An archaic term the people themselves no longer use, seeing themselves simply as (true) Americans. Largely Protestants that settled what was, in the day, backcountry.

Funny you should mention this. I had to fill out the census yesterday and I put American as my race. I'm Scots-Irish by very definition but my family has been here since the 1700s so American makes more sense.

NY state (outside NYC) has some of the cheapest real estate prices in the country (along with among the highest property taxes).  If you're not revolving around NYC in any way, shape, or form, no matter how big,  Albany does not give the smallest fark about your company, or the jobs it wants to bring.  There is one county just above NYC that received a billion $ incentive for a chip-building company to make a new factory there.  That's it.  There are commercials in the south right now advertising NY is "Open for business" (note: no taxes for 10 years, but in Year 11, you're screwed, or you'll just move out like everyone else does).  Anyway, the commercials are a big joke with southerners.

Believing the loyalists were strongest in the South and hoping to enlist the slaves in their cause--an objective that seems incompatible with a focus on Southern loyalists--the British turned their efforts to the South. In fact, the British had some important military successes in the South. They occupied Savannah, Georgia, in late 1778 and Charleston, South Carolina, in May 1779. Dr Jack Badofsky: Sammichless: Farty McPooPants: Sammichless: The problem is they don't have enough good paying jobs there. All of these maps can basically be explained by that one statement.

The South is Conservative. They believe that Liberal tax rates, unions, business regulations, etc. are hostile to business..... The obvious answer is that they need to be more friendly to attract jobs.

Nevermind that the good paying jobs have been concentrated in the most Liberal states forever.

enry: Obviously these states aren't conservative enough.

Yup.

Were they liberal when the industries that pay these jobs moved there because of geography?  Nope.  The jobs stay there because of geography, not because they are liberal.  You've got your cart in front of the horse.

The industries move here constantly. We provide what businesses need to operate. We have more modern port terminals, more miles of train track, more lanes on our highways, larger investments in higher education. You know, tax and spend stuff.

Conservatives wish to provide companies with what they want..... but, they don't collect enough revenue to first provide companies with what they need first.

If a lot more businesses could set up proper supply chains in the south, they would move there.

Michelin, BMW, Nissan, Toyota, Cisco, Honda, GM, Caterpillar, Volkswagen, etc., etc. think differently about your opinion.

I'm not so sure what the northeast is bragging about, since their workplace landscape is mainly service industry, and what's left of steel industry, auto assembly and that's about it.  Upstate NY has 53 counties, 43 of which have negative growth in the last 20 years, even with all of that Great Lakes access and available property.  Mario Cuomo told several automakers (Nissan, Saturn, Volkswagen) in the 1980's and early 1990's to go fark themselves when they were looking to build new plants there.  The north  wants poor people there (NY has some of the most liberal welfare programs available, throwing money at the ...

Microsoft, Amazon, Paccar (which includes Peterbuilt), REI, Starbucks, Nordstrom, Eddie Bauer, Costco, etc. This is my state alone. We are also the world capitol of aerospace engineering and manufacture, and the 9th highest grossing agricultural state. The Conservative states really don't have enough industry to support their population. They cannot fit more industry either, which is why they do not grow as fast.

The Companies in my state would love to move to the south...... they can't do it. The south does not grow their infrastructure fast enough to make room for them. The rails, and ports, and highways in the south are basically already working at capacity.

Fiscal conservatism supports "business friendly" policies...... but, they don't invest in their own future. So they do not get the jobs.

who are moving there mostly for the low cost of living, not good jobs. While retirees bring external cash into a community and  jobs providing them services they really don't contribute much as far a paying taxes or even caring about community issue such a schools.

I'm surprised more tightwads haven't moved to Mexico for an even lower cost of living. Are there laws saying they can't receive their Social Security or Medicare if they don't reside in the US?

Dr.Zom

Funny you should mention this. I had to fill out the census yesterday and I put American as my race. I'm Scots-Irish by very definition but my family has been here since the 1700s so American makes more sense.

It's very common amongst those who share your ancestry. As I understand it, they originally were distinguished from English people that were generally more affluent and settled on the coasts, but then Catholic/Gaelic Irish immigrants became a thing, and they definitely wanted to be differentiated from them, as well. Eventually they just said fark it and called themselves Americans, since in large part they were here before the American revolution against Britain and made up a large part of the American forces (not terribly fond of the Crown). They took to the mountains and settled much of what's now the South, just as the later waves of Germans settled much of the more northern states, spreading into the midwest and eventually west, all of which is still evident in the ethnic map provided upthread.

Hardy folk. Great Indian fighters and pioneers. Touchy and willing to stab you with a proto-Bowie knife for giving insult, as I understand it. Although my family has only come to America in the last century, I have a fascination for the way ethnic groups related to each other in earlier American history, especially the groups that were here prior to the revolution, like your (and my wife's) people. Essentially spitting in the face of England and its daughter civilisation of the early colonies and turning off into the wilderness to deal with the natives on their own. Crazy times.

Sammichless: Microsoft, Amazon, Paccar (which includes Peterbuilt), REI, Starbucks, Nordstrom, Eddie Bauer, Costco, etc. This is my state alone.

Also the state with the highest minimum wage in the nation, beats the U.S. as a whole in job creation, and had trailed the U.S. level of poverty for the past 7 years.

Thank you.

And just to piss off Conservatives, I would like to add that, because we have more jobs, and less poverty, we:

Are in the bottom ten for public school spending..... but, the top ten for public school results.

We are towards the bottom in safety net spending, but offer some of the most expansive benefits.

We are very low in crime prevention spending (police, prisons, and court costs), but have a reasonable crime rate.

/Hehe.

Birnone: I would have liked to see how a 'religious activity' map might overlay on that. Does a state full of churchgoers, relative to the average state, tend to be southern? You can't fix things if you won't admit there's a problem, and people with strong religious convictions may be open to "...because God said" types of arguments against change.

Probably need to map against fundamentalism rather than just church going.

cman: TV's Vinnie: cman: Did you fail 4th grade a few times? That's the grade when you start learning about the revolutionary war. Social Studies IIRC is the name of that class. To say that the southern folks sided with the British is stupid.

http://www.loc.gov/teachers/classroommaterials/presentationsandactiv it ies/presentations/timeline/amrev/south/

They also struck a disastrous blow on General Horatio Gates' forces at Camden, South Carolina, in August 1780.

Believing loyalists were strongest in the south does not mean that they sided with the Brits.

You lose. Good day, sir.

No, you lose because all you got was "cuz I said so!".

SquiggsIN: It won't be exclusive to WA and CO in the next few years. States are going to start falling like dominoes once they are surrounded neighbor states that their residents drive into to pay taxes on cannabis, have a meal, fill up on gas, and then return to their own non-cannabis approving states.

They won't do that. They'll just pull what they do with people who cross state lines to buy cheaper liquor. Watch the cars that go to the state line cannabis stores, look for the ones that have their state's plates and bust them as they cross the state line.

I asked you for a citation showing me that southern citizens supported the Brits. You instead gave me a link that showed because the Brits THOUGHT loyalist support was best in the south. All that was was a link of Brits and their military strategy. Please give me the citation that I asked for

Lee451: All y'all yankees are free to go home. We promise not to stop you.

/Yankees are like hemorrhoids; when they come down and go back up they aren't too bad. When they come down and stay down they are a constant source of irritation.

Southerns are like ball sweat- a constant lingering problem down there that probably won't fix itself.
