Which, actually makes a lot of sense.

In the Delta, especially, you have a lot of poor and underprivileged people who will eat as cheap of food as they can (Actually, outside of NA Reservations this is the poorest area in the US - there are still a lot of houses which even have dirt floors). In the Middle and Upper class  areas, good food is integral and a lot of it is the stereotypical southern cooking the Deep Fried South is known for.

Some people are just proud of anything

I bet ya there are a lot of people who are proud that there is no government in parts of Chicago

Listen, you guys can go on and on about healthy lifestyles, but Bubba here shot himself a wild boar, and we're gonna dump it in the ole backyard oil pit and see what comes out.

If that makes us fat, then so be it.

I disagree subby, there are plenty of cultures in the various fat folds

We get it. Subby hates black people.

Fine, go burn a cross, racist.

Some years back, there was a major flood around there and we watched the news reports on TV as a school bus full of kids were rescued. They hauled the kids from the flood waters, out of trees, off snags, stranded on bits of high land.

I recall noting that as this helicopter hauled a kid out of a tree, that, due to his size, they were probably going to need a bigger copter. All were elementary school kids and it seemed that every one they rescued was about the size of a cow.

I commented on this to my brother, who had been through that area a few times and he just grinned and said 'yeah, they grow 'em big there'.

Apparently, they still are.

All you haters, bless your heart.  With all due respect, I'm just gonna' turn the other cheek and celebrate at the fish house with an all-you-can-eat order of fried catfish and hush puppies.

It would certainly have to be a modern one.  Not too long ago, only the rich could afford to by lazy and gluttonous.

Maladaptive over eating is primarily a function of stress.

Right around the time it became illegal to own other people, probably.

yup there are some crappy things about the South, but if you've never been to New Orleans or Key West then you are really missing out.

Around the time of the civil war, when poor sanitary conditions resulted in widespread hookworm infections.

You should know!

I'm just busting your balls guy. NASCAR is popular because it's cheaper than any other spectator sport in the country to attend. A lot of races are on par with minor league baseball prices. A lot of the tracks let you bring in coolers, if you try to bring a water bottle into Giant's stadium you are arrested.

Plus a pack of carbureted big block v8s rocketing down a track at 200 mph is more interesting than 99% of anything else in the broadcast spectrum. You don't get any more manly or american than that

Watching cars go around and around? I don't get it. Why don't you just bring your drinks and coolers down and watch the traffic on the freeway.

Huh, Montana as the least obese is a little surprising. I figured eating-as-entertainment was one of the things people did in boring areas, and Montana isn't really a happening place*.

*for most people. I think the nature is beautiful and would probably be happy there, but it's not for most.

Neither of those is culturally really "the South" though. Key West is practically its own country.

Perhaps this is the sort of thing that could happen anywhere, but...

My friend's brother in law in Mississippi has been breeding semi-feral cats for one sole reason:

Because every year since the local farm conglomerate started growing corn surrounding their land, every year there is a Biblical-level invasion of rats once they hit some population tipping point and get very, very hungry.

I dunno... This doesn't happen in saner states. I really have to wonder about some places.

I'm watching Cosmos right now.  I don't choose my programming based on how "manly" or "American" it is.  Nascar is a lot of left turns, yawn.  I'd rather watch my neighbor mow his lawn.

It's pretty boring on tv (at least it is to me). But, the one time I went to a race it was a lot of fun.
