Banned from 12k GBP a year private school for anorexia, despite undergoing expensive life saving treatment for your eating disorder?

Rich white girl problems.

Girls getting pregnant in high school sure is contagious. Early in my junior year of high school a girl got pregnant, shortly after a couple of her friends also got knocked up and it just cascaded from there. By the time I finished my senior year at least a dozen girls had gotten pregnant. Looking back, maybe I should have used condoms more.

Nix Nightbird: Actually, I think the school made the right call. Anorexia might sometimes be a "disease" in that it's often the result of a different mental disorder, but it's still not healthy behavior and sometime girls DO emulate the behavior despite not suffering from any body dysmorphic disorders. Getting her out of the school reinforces the idea that this is not acceptable behavior, and gives her family the opportunity to send her somewhere for help without worrying about her studies. Get her well first, and then have her catch up with school later.

Saying "she has a mental disorder" is not any reason to leave her in school. Pedophiles are technically suffering from a mental disorder. Sociopaths are suffering from a mental disorder. Exhibitionists can be described as having a mental disorder, too. We wouldn't let any of those people stay in school if they were visibly demonstrating their disorder.

I seem to remember the same reason given for teens getting pregnant, and having to transfer to a school for pregnant teens.

moeburn: anorexia, when not accompanied by bulimia, is rarely a self-image issue. studies have shown its really more of a "not as hungry as their body needs them to be" issue.

Get that out of a reader's digest or something because that's utter bullshiat.

Nick Nostril: "In the headteacher's eyes, she may well have inspired copycat disorders. "

They teach that to the girls? I wondered where they learnt it.

Yes, there will be faux copycats, called "wannarexics", but most of those girls will never be anorexic; they just want to be thin, or to get attention.  They'll maintain full control of what and when they eat, how many calories they eat, etc., and can stop the disordered eating just as quickly as they started it.  They may lose some weight, but they're not sick.

True anorexia isn't really contagious, though there is evidence that there's a genetic component.  I even read one study that suggested a link between high-functioning autism--with its OCDs and obsessions with numbers and routine--and anorexia.

Great Porn Dragon: ReverendJasen: GBB: 6 stone? WTF is that?
How many smirglins in a stone?

14 lbs.  So about 28 smirglins, or 98 smurfs.

Or in Murrican units, it's very much in the "dear gods, get that girl a sammich, and not one of those weird British ones which only has cucumbers in it".  (84 lbs, which is well in the "too damn skinny" category unless she's in fourth grade or something.)

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing?

would make sense if she was one of those "pro-ana" nutjobs.  But if she had a problem and got better, it seems like she'd be a good influence on the other students, not a bad one.  Assuming she stays better, that is.

the_vegetarian_cannibal: Yeah great job, school. This move will surely help to strengthen her already fragile self-esteem.

I'm not sure what this makes me, but I'm getting tired of perpetually having to "fix" someone else's problems. Basically, we're supposed to constantly walk on egg shells and not do, say, or think anything that might affect someone else's "self esteem". If a stranger can either tear you down or build you up based solely on a few choice comments (bad or good), then maybe the problem is you.

I don't know how it would've made a difference.  You have to have sex for the condoms to matter.

Not that I think their move was effective in any way other than to expose their own ignorance, anorexia is so far off the deep end of crazy that I really doubt the girl's self-esteem will be shattered by it.  This is, at worst, like kicking a guy when he has the flu.  It might feel awful, but it's hardly a killshot.
