Sum Dum Gai: In a brush pile? That's a wasp nest, not a bee hive. Wasps have the more dangerous sting, as well.
RyansPrivates: Probably, but could be bumble bees. They sometimes build the nests underground. Don't know if their habitat includes San Diego, but I know from first hand experience they can sting like a motherfarker.
