Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, kicked off CPAC -- the annual conservative pilgrimage just outside the nation's capital -- by telling a crowd of the GOP faithful, "We need to abolish the IRS."

A US Senator and Presidential hopeful

YAY!  No taxes!  sure, there will be no military to defend the country, but what the hell, at least i'll have a few extra dollars in my pocket.

Shouldn't he be more worried about which one of them will die in Benghazi?

Senators will work for free, of course. Right?

They don't care. It's what they want to hear.

Say what you will about CPAC at least the GOP has a high profile event every year.

I don't think a lot of people realize this but as much as people talk about the GOP fighting each other, there is a lot of infighting among Democrats too. There is a strong streak of anti-money progressivism just beginning to emerge, and it's not a fan of this center-right crap that has largely inundated the Democratic leadership.

Its biggest problem is that it's poorly organized and has no real money to speak of. But it's coming.

Maybe he can get some cheap Cuban labor to help him hammer that last nail in?

"By virtue of your being here today, tomorrow each and every one of you is going to be audited by the IRS"

shiattiest door prize ever. But let's check in tomorrow and see if Cruz is lying. It'd be really easy to find out if he's a soothsayer or a liar.

Yes because there wasn't a military before July 9, 1953.

I used to attend CPAC in college, it was only just starting to become the circus it has since evolved into, and that was 10 years ago. We mostly just went because the school gave us the budget to go every year, and hey, free trip to DC!

Yes because by "abolish the IRS" he really meant "rename it the Bureau of Internal Revenue."

It'd be great if the IRS actually did audit a bunch of them and found all sorts of tax problems.

The derp train doesn't stop, ever. It's refreshing to think I'm smarter than a lot of people in this country (namely, anyone who would say or believe anything being said at the CPAC), but it's immediately sobering that some of these clods have congressional power.

2014-03-07 01:38:43 PM
You know, if all this IRS paranoia on the right leads to them cheating less on their taxes for fear of audit, then Ted and and the other clowns beating the drum of the IRS "scandal" will have done the IRS, and the nation, a great favor.

Please, continue to spread this fear.

Well, its true, when they try to write off the entire expense of going to CPAC as a charity donation.

FTA: "Following his speech, a six-person panel discussion, titled "IRS Targeting Scandal: Protecting the Voice of the People," served as a refresher course for the standing-room-only crowd packed into the Maryland meeting room.

The purpose, panelists told FoxNews.com, was to come together and share stories about what they say are abusive targeting practices of conservative groups at the hands of the tax-collecting agency."

I really do wonder one thing:  conservatives sure do seem to enjoy nailing themselves up on crosses to proof how 'persecuted they are' (Oh nos!  We got asked to fill out a form!).

But when that very last conservatives finally gets his turn to get nailed up, after he helped all the rest - who's going to drive in the nail for him?

What's it like to handle the paradox of being so brutally obtuse and still being able to type coherently?

Like, I can understand people having clear, salient thoughts that they just can't manage to type out in a meaningful way, but I can't quite wrap my head around someone whose skull is indistinguishable from an unopened can of split-pea soup being able to form complete sentences.

"By virtue of your being here today, tomorrow each and every one of you is going to be audited by the IRS," he said.

I'm sure everyone conveniently forgot to pass around a sign up sheet so we could get a full list of names to test the accuracy of that statement.

Kookogey, said the tax agency slow-walked his application for 501(c)(3) status. He says what should have taken two to four months stretched out over 35 months and ended up costing him a $30,000 grant. He said he also lost 75 percent of his business because his clients did not want to associate with someone being looked at by "the largest and most intimidating organization in the world."

Aren't 501(c)(3) by definition Religious, Educational, Charitable, Scientific, Literary, Testing for Public Safety, to Foster National or International Amateur Sports Competition, or Prevention of Cruelty to Children or Animals Organizations - aka charitable organizations?

What exactly was his 'business'?

People are scandalized to find that a group called "patriots who would rather be keelhauled under an aircraft carrier than pay taxes" is sometimes engaged in shady tax business.

Maybe. But I bet we get a mostly new staff and some rule changes along with the name change.

We have to collect taxes. It has to happen. I haven't seen anyone say "we're going to end taxes". But the system and the people doing the collecting need to be radically changed.

Kind of like producing that rant and contributing nothing to the conversation. And talking about forming sentences, who starts a written sentence with "like"? And I have to flag you for over use of the comma. You're not charged by the period here.

Wouldn't that be neat. Congress pays for and maintains a standing army. But if you want to blow something up you have to sell enough War Bond to foot the bill.

Silly talk I know. But it would be fun to watch. Maybe a telethon?

They've got some real luminaries at the CPAC throwing red meat around today.

D'Souza told the conservative conference that Obama believes "the free market system is based on theft" and seemed to be under the impression that Obama came up with the entire system of taxation: "Think about this, it's almost like here you are at home, you're watching TV and a bunch of government guys show up at your door and they start taking your furniture, and taking your car and you're like, 'What are you doing?' They're like, 'You know your paycheck that you got last month? You didn't earn that, you stole it, it doesn't really belong to you.' This is what, in a sense, we are up against."

D'Souza was charged Thursday with one count of making illegal campaign contributions, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison. He also is charged with one count of causing false statements to be made to the FEC, which carries a maximum of five years in prison.
