Ellison was a hack. the best thing he ever wrote was the title of his story 'I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream'. the actual story focuses far too much on canned food and rape. the guy's widest exposure was writing for camp tv shows like The Outer Limits and Star Trek. i posit that if his name was less cool-sounding, he'd be less well known than  Meyer Dolinsky.

1) They promised him a whole lot of $$$
2) They gave him a significant advance of that $$$
