It's a lot more embarrassing to be beaten by second stringers.

So... they lost a double-header?

I just posted this on my facebook feed, then thought, "I wonder what fark thinks about this". Only two comments? I shall return later.

Thursday's game between the Marlins and Red Sox was called after eight innings due to rain with both teams tied at zero. Boston's lineup out-hit Miami's, 7-2.

The Marlins suck, but that doesn't excuse the Red Sox from breaking the rules, meaningless game or not.

So the Red Sox organization is douchey. This surely isn't a repeat from always. Unless it is?

Marlins are 7-2 in pre-season.  My Mets are 2-5.  I don't wanna hear shiat from the Marlins.

How bad are my Mets gonna suck.

The game probably shouldn't have been played in the first place. Just about every other grapefruit league game was cancelled.

Last season, the three worst NL teams in Spring Training were the Dodgers, Reds & Pirates. The Marlins did better than the Nationals.

The three best AL teams were the Royals, Orioles & Mariners. Houston did better than the Yankees & Rays.

I'm cherry picking a bit here, but Spring Training results are generally worthless.

As close to an expert as you are on baseball on fark, you lose objectivity when it comes to 'Satan's favorite team'.

The Red Sox tie only the Flyers and Bruins for worst fan base and douchiest organization in all of sports.

This is just further evidence.

Hey, just for the record, I hate the Bruins.

I would hope the minor leaguers are getting worked out. It's not like you can guarantee your squad's health throughout the season.

They play the Marlins again on the 11th.

Have the entire lineup bunt.

2014-03-07 06:07:06 AM
Did they lose?

2014-03-07 06:51:37 AM
Meh.

Who ever paid a stupid amount of money for this game should have known better.

The Red Sox barely ever send any good players to Jupiter for games.

I went back in '05 and got to see Manny and Trot Nixon and that was it. I never went back to a Spring Training game again.

Very true, but FTFA:

Rodriguez also notes that Boston's lineup was especially galling given that the Marlins had instigated "super premium" pricing for tickets to Thursday's game against the defending World Series champion

The Marlins have no business charging "super premium" pricing for anything.

I'm thinking this is the entire reason why the Red Sox didn't send any of the big guns.  They expected the game to be cancelled and therefore didn't feel like wasting a workday for the major leaguers.

This wouldn't happen, Marlins, if you didn't suck.

Just send out the starting roster with their glove hand tied behind their back. Everybody's happy.

Fielding a minor league team is against the rules?  I had better let Astros management know ASAP!

They're going to end up in 3rd place in the division, just like last year. Mainly because the Marlins 3rd-rate payroll and lineup will collapse as usual, and the Phillies are currently looking at plans to install a shuffleboard court and bingo tables in the clubhouse, but still...

I think the Mets will surprise some people... on their way to winning about 80 games.

I think the reason the Marlins club was upset was because they were charging higher prices (because the Red Sox are a draw) and then the Red Sox sent a bunch of AAA players. The Marlins certainly can't charge premium prices to see the Marlins play. I have this theory that a lot of fans that go to Marlins games are there to see the OTHER team.

Plus they didn't want to lose Pedroia in a tornado. I'm pretty sure those winds could fling him pretty far.

That's likely the main reason behind the complaints yes, but were I King Baseball, I'd specifically grant an exemption to teams playing against the Marlins.

Then again, were I King Baseball, I'd just relocate the Marlins to Montreal and order Loria publicly flogged on a daily basis in Place Jacques Cartier.

Selig is about to retire. You've got my vote.

It's not like the Marlins bother to field a team of major leaguers. Why should other teams do it when they're playing the Marlins?

I wonder if they're actually reverse-predictive.

If your team is good, you're probably telling your awesome players to take it easy, don't get hurt, and get comfortable.  They're treating the games like practice.

If your team is a complete disaster, you probably have positional battles going on everywhere on the diamond, and guys are playing hard because they don't want to be the one who has to get back on the bus to AA.

From here, there was a positive correlation with an r-squared of .21 from 2003 to 2010.

What might be slightly more interesting would be comparing early spring records to late spring records. I'd bet the last 15 games are a better indicator than the first 15.

Your theory is absolutely true in my case.  I go 3 times a year, when the Dodgers are in town.

Occasionally I'll go if the other team has a great starting pitcher that I'd like to see, as the Marlins are always ready to be no-hit.

I just hate giving Loria my money.
