Looks like we are getting more of the nasty stuff tonight... sleet and freezing rain, changing to rain in the morning..  Doppler shows a mass of rain coming due north from NC, with snow and sleet to the west of us...  going to feed Fred and Tailer early to avoid going out in the stuff.....

So very sorry, do what you can with your family, my first wife's father had lung cancer and it was pretty rough, but we were all there right to the end.  As hard as that was, being together helped everyone a lot. Your Caturday family will be here with hugs and shoulders and ears to chew on and cute kittehs and funny capshuns as you need us too...

We finally go the call from the shelter, and on Tuesday in a snow storm on the way home from work, I picked up our new temporary housemates...
They are still in quarantine in the guest room for a couple more days, but they have the run of the room with some new toys, safe nest spaces and hiding places, a litter box of their own, food & water topped up often, and a ton more room than at than at the shelter.  We also have the nanny cam to keep an unobtrusive eye on the lot between visits.

this is the momma...
img.fark.net
she's young and slight, and skittish, but not as skinny or skittish as Pandora was...
(I love the tail wrapped around the nursing kitten...)

I guess we'll start with that one...

and there are two more...

and...

The kittens are almost 4 weeks and happy health playful tumbly fluffy smiles.  Should help the rest of winter to go by quickly.

2 CT sacans before surgery, 2 CT scans pre-chemo, at least one more post-chemo. More blood tests than I've been able to count. Chemo has me lethargic and achy, bot otherwise in good spirits.

YAY CATURDAY!

Just logged out from a sucky 90 minute marathon at work. I need to vent....

I was adding a new vlan and subnet to our core routers and distrubution switches. We have redundant equipment and run VRRP (which is identical to HSRP in Cisco terms). I was adding the config it to a secure segment which is to be firewalled (also redundant).
So I dump my scripts into all four devices and everything looks great, but I can't get the secondary router to respond. After burning my eyes out going over the same stuff ad nauseum I get the local engineer on the phone. After 30 minutes he can't find anything wrong either. Everything shows that it's up. I then discover that I can't get to many of the secondary interfaces that reside on the secure segment.

Turns out that someone was playing with the new firewall in front of the secondary router and must have loaded a rule set. We're not ready to configure them yet and they're supposed to be running in full passive mode.....apparently not anymore. So add to my loooong list of shiat to do tomorrow the fact that I'll need to spend lord knows how much time with the security team to get this sorted out.

Sorry for the totally geeky wall of text. I had to let that out.

That is a sucky day. I've had weeks like that. This week was close. For whatever reason one tab on one remote website needed to have a specific IP range and set of ports clear on my firewall in order to work. How stupid is that?

Just logged out from a sucky 90 minute marathon at work. I need to vent....

I was adding a new vlan and subnet to our core routers and distrubution switches. We have redundant equipment and run VRRP (which is identical to HSRP in Cisco terms). I was adding the config it to a secure segment which is to be firewalled (also redundant).

No, they're locked down. However after thinking about it I think I know how this may have happened.
Up to this point I've been managing access lists to restrict traffic in and out of those subnets. About a month ago a new guy in security was having trouble allowing traffic in to a specific host. He didn't know I was using access lists. I bet he loaded a rule set and then when he pulled it out he forgot to set it back to permit all traffic.

My little girl needs a trip to the vet tomorrow. We noticed symptoms yesterday. She won't jump or get on her hind legs and 'do paws', can't go up or down stairs, keeps her tail tucked down all the time, sometimes whimpers when she tries to lie down, yelps when she moves suddenly, and her poops are very short and thin (though not necessarily runny). She's almost 9. Hopefully just a bug and nothing serious but Mrs. Buck and I are concerned. If the Caturday gang could toss a good thought towards Jazzy it'd be much appreciated. Thank you.

We got a new and unexpected addition to the family today.  Our workmen found her stuck inside a rooftop AC unit.  It was tricky to get her out, but she is in good shape.  There was no mama to be found, so we took her home.  She's eating and drinking and already likes to be held.  She will be hauled in for shots, etc., shortly, but so far she seems 100%.  No injuries and she appears healthy.

She must have a little fold DNA in her.  The tips of her ears are folded over and she could not be any cuter.  At the least, she's a medium hair, but who knows, she might fluff out in the fall.  Oh, and you can't quite see it in the photos, but there is a little grey soul patch right on her chin.

She doesn't have a name yet.  My family is kinda bad about that - sometimes we'll have cats for several months before the right name turns up.  In the meantime, she has other kitties to play with, lots of food, lots of snuggles, and some cozy places to take a nap.

It's all good. In both my chosen profession (now a basically dead industry) and my current I could use words, phrases, and acronyms  that 99% of the general population would be lost trying to figure out. I suspect that's true of almost any profession. No matter how basic and easy a job looks, they all have their special lingo.

akimbotoo: John Buck 41: My little girl needs a trip to the vet tomorrow. Thank you.

yobbery: OlderGuy: I guess no PW on the secondarys yet....

No, they're locked down. However after thinking about it I think I know how this may have happened.
Up to this point I've been managing access lists to restrict traffic in and out of those subnets. About a month ago a new guy in security was having trouble allowing traffic in to a specific host. He didn't know I was using access lists. I bet he loaded a rule set and then when he pulled it out he forgot to set it back to permit all traffic.

lysdexic: This week was close.

Yeah, it really blows when nothing seems to go right and it's all because of stupid shiat. It's never anything exciting like an equipment fire.

sounds reasonable... I am fairly adept on computer issues but that level of expertise is way beyond me....  just replaced my routers with new ones rated for IPv6 also... will IPv4 addresses be converted?

LOL! Nope. Boy, I'd like to have one, if they were not endangered wildlife and would most likely eat me. They're the most beautiful of the big cats, IMHO.

BTW, good thoughts and wishes to you for Jazzy tomorrow at the vet. Hopefully she just has a little strain of her back or something that will heal easily.

L.D. Ablo: We got a new and unexpected addition to the family today.

What a cutie!!  She looks about the same age as the newbs at my house, maybe a little younger, she might benefit from some supplemental 'glop' without her mom around.  As for the ears, the cartilage starts to stiffen up at around that age, the ears might perk up in the next week or so.

I'll agree with the FARK CANCER sentiments.  We have a cousin in the last stages of what started as a Melanoma that wasn't caught until it had spread through the entire body (brain, too).  He was just diagnosed and started treatment a little over a month ago.  Now they've decided to stop treatment because the tumors were still growing despite the Chemo & radiation.  **Sigh**  He's my mom's cousin and I really don't know him, but it still sucks.  :(

**Insert another FARK CANCER pic here**

It's funny how 2+ feet of snow can melt in a couple of days when it suddenly jumps to the mid-40s to low-50s... Now instead of "holy fark, snow!" We're at "double holy fark, lotsa water everywhere!"  The city workers actually caused some panic here today because they rang the doorbell to tell mom the water was flooding into our garage.  It wasn't.  Not even close to doing so.  But to appease her, I had to go out and dig some mini-river beds for the stupid water to drain through.  Ummm... ouch... Not helpful for my back pain, nor did it help the stupid migraine that started last night.  The worst part is I was outside for over an hour digging & barely made a dent in what needs to be shovelled out!  Ok, enough whining.

Evidently he had some serious issues the other day. The info on FB was sent along by another Caturdite. He is holding his own last I heard. No idea what the issue is now. Poor kitteh, poor Sherpa18! I feel for him, and worry about them both.

The only other one we've been to was an emergency clinic on a Sunday 20 miles away 5+ years ago that we went to when our beautiful little calico kitty (Callie) got hit by a car. There was nothing they could do for her. Callies' legacy is that both Ripley and Jasper are indoor kitties, so in that sense Callie didn't die in vain. I guess.

My dearest friends, as most of you who do the FB thingee already know (thanks to valnt9) my beloved white boy suffered a severe relapse late last night, and I absolutely lost it after thinking he was getting better (for those of you who are allergic to FB as I am, he stopped eating, drinking, and began having urinary issues again). I honestly did not think he would make it through the night.

Much to my relief, he was still hanging in this morning, but as the day progressed, he would not eat or drink and looked to be in some distress. I spoke to my vet, and we agreed that his demeanor was indicative of one of two things - either he had developed crystals/stones (which at this point is doubtful could be dissolved by conventional methods and would probably require surgical intervention, which in turn he would most likely not survive due to his compromised condition) or his kidneys are finally just shutting down after 18 months of late stage renal failure (which again, is fatal).

We also agreed that it was probably time for me to help him over the bridge. I thought I was prepared for this, but after crying like a little girl, I sat on my bed with the white one on my lap, and asked him if he was ready to go - and if not, he had to show me a sign that I was pulling the trigger too soon.

A few minutes later, he got up and had a drink. And then waited for me to crack open a fresh can of food - which he ate half of. While it still takes him 3-4 minutes in the litter box to urinate, he IS going (no blood, yowling or straining) ... and has continued drinking and eating and napping.

I'm now well aware that the end is inevitably swiftly approaching - it may be a day, a week, hopefully longer - but realistically - probably not .... but now I'm sure he will tell me when.  And it ain't tonight. So instead of going to the vet, I scraped up some spare change and ran out and bought him a half dozen chicken wings and his favorite pouch tuna.

*sorry, i had to interrupt this post to watch the white boy devour half of the aforementioned pouch of tuna, have a drink of water and curl up on my bed for a nap*

Dragon and I want to thank you all for your love, support and good wishes as we both go through this - I for one could not have done it alone. You people are simply the best. I'm not sure how much I'll be around this week, it depends on how my baby boy is feeling, but I'll keep you updated as best I can.

Hello everybodeee!

 ^-^
='.'=

Weather's been a bit less brutal...which means the cats can go OUT. I'm grateful they haven't decided that' I'M responsible for the inclement conditions and taken it out on me (i.e., pooping and peeing in EXTREMELY inappropriate locations...or trying to destroy each other...or the furnishings).

The Ice Queen: What a sucky Caturday this week *edit:
FARK CANCER!* :(

Aw man...Hon, I wish you strength and serenity that you may be able to give this to your loved ones as they need it, as well as to yourself. Hope that came out right...

Raven and I work this weekend as usual.
Little Casper is always so glad to see Raven...doesn't even wait for her to get out of her carrier! Jumps right in there with her, little silver arms around Raven's neck *groom groom groom so glad to see you missed you so much play with me PLEASE?*

Casper gets PLENTY of attention from not only her own human, but from his housemates and the staff, but Raven is the only one of her 'own people' with whom she has to socialize.

Back to doing MAJOR cleaning... *le sigh* but it'll be worth it when I'm done, right?
RIGHT?

Somebody, please say "Oh yes, absolutely right!"

Thank Bast and FSM for White Zin-in-a-Box...

Sherpa
I am so sad for you right now, many of us have faced similar struggles at various times with our own furry friends, and when someone we care about is going through that, it brings back memories of our own trials with hopes of extracting some sage advice...
Dragon couldn't have picked a more caring human, and will let you know if and when.
I'm afraid that's maybe not exactly sage advice, but I keep getting distracted with all the dust flying around over here..

sherpa18: My dearest friends, as most of you who do the FB thingee already know (thanks to valnt9) my beloved white boy suffered a severe relapse late last night, and I absolutely lost it after thinking he was getting better (for those of you who are allergic to FB as I am, he stopped eating, drinking, and began having urinary issues again).

Thank you for keeping us non-FB folks in the loop. I know you'll do what is best for Dragon when the time comes. Take care of both yourselves.

Sherpa18 I am glad to hear that Dragon is perked up a little. While you are taking care of his needs, please make sure to take care of yourself too. You have a huge family right here, and I think I speak for everyone when I say, we are here for you. Please give Dragon skritches and hugs from me and Wentworth.

Oh Sherpa my heart was heavy last night when I heard things weren't going well for Dragon. I hope he can find some strength to get over this hurdle and stick around a while longer. He'll tell you when he's ready to leave, they always do.  I'm glad he chose not to go yet and can enjoy some more chicken wings and tuna.
We all love you both very much and wish there was a way to make this easy. Remember we're all here for you. You have my number too, call me if you want to.

John Buck 41: My little girl needs a trip to the vet tomorrow. Thank you.
[farm6.staticflickr.com image 528x396]

Aww, sending snuggles & healing thoughts to little Jazzy!  Poor sweet thing.  Fingers crossed that it's just a temporary blip, merely constipation, or something minor that will clear up by itself.

If funds allow, I would wholeheartedly recommend the vet do a geriatric panel blood test while you're there, just as a routine part of the check-up, even if it turns out her current issue doesn't require it for diagnosis.  It can detect a wide assortment of issues very early on, many of which are very manageable and even curable in the early stages long before she would exhibit any symptoms.  Nine is hardly "geriatric" for many dogs, but things like liver and kidney disease, diabetes, certain cancers, etc can get a foothold very sneakily, and I would hate to have anything like that overtake yet another of our wonderful Caturday friends, if it is at all preventable.

Apologies if I'm preaching to the choir -- I thought it certainly couldn't hurt to mention.  If it catches something that helps her feel even a teensy bit better settling into her golden years, why not.

Best wishes for a good appointment tomorrow.  Feel better soon Jazzy!

sherpa18: Dragon and I want to thank you all for your love, support and good wishes as we both go through this - I for one could not have done it alone. You people are simply the best. I'm not sure how much I'll be around this week, it depends on how my baby boy is feeling, but I'll keep you updated as best I can.

Oh Sherpa.... May Ceiling Cat bless you and Dragon both.  Too many of us know what you are going through.  Please remember that in this difficult time, you are not alone.  Sending lots of love and strength.  We know you will do only what is best for Dragon, you always have, and you always will.  So glad he decided to hang around a little longer, please give him a little kiss for me, and take as many hugs as you need for yourself.

sherpa18 thank you for your update. It takes a great deal of strength to do what you are doing. Remember, we are here for you, you have my number, call if you need an extra pair of ears. I think many will agree that you are a very important part of the Caturday family. Please allow us the honor of grieving with you, when that moment arrives. We are here, and our arms are open wide.

Pretty much that goes for any one of our family. Lurker or poster.

Now, I gotta blow my nose and wipe my eyes and get ready for work. Hugs and prayers to you all..and scritches...cannot forget teh scritches

Jazzy and I are back from the vet. No high temperature, and her anal glands weren't 'too' bad. She has a spot on her bum that she's been scratching/chewing which could account for some pain, and a loose rear kneecap (which I don't recall being mentioned before). He gave her a steroid shot and Prednisone pills.

Thanks for all your good thoughts for her last night.
