ProcrastinationStation: Real Women Drink Akvavit: ProcrastinationStation: looong time lurker (im useless at posting pics, so I just follow along) checking in to offer condolences to Sherpa.  Ive been lurking so long I feel like I know Dragon, and I admit to shedding a tear upon learning of his passing.  Saturday mornings with a cup of coffee and Caturday were an integral part of my own cancer journey (FARK YOU CANCER! - almost 2 year breast cancer survivor YAY).....

My 16 year old furball enjoys reading Caturday threads with me and Im sure he will be saddened to learn this news. And he will get extra lubs and noms....  I know I too will face the dreaded bridge with him soon enough (will be my first go around with it and Im terrified of the day)....

hugs to all

Hugs right back to you. Don't dread the bridge. The Rainbow Bridge is actually Bifrost, which connects Asgard, where the gods dwell, to Midgard, where humans dwell.   (*SNIP*)

Thank you!  That was so lovely Im thinking to save it up for when my Buster's time comes!  (I still dread it though, little buggar's been my pal for so very long - pics in profile, hard enough to get them there, not sure I could get 'em into a thread!)

well, instead of dreading that time, focus instead on loving your critter each and every day. Then, when that time does come, you can honestly say that your pet had the best life you could provide. Believe me, it makes a huuuge difference. And there is something, comforting to know that your pet trusts you to provide an end, when life becomes too painful. I know we all say it, but you really will know the time. It will hurt like hades. But you will know you did the right thing.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I certainly do enjoy the buggar every day, and I know he's had a long happy life.  I dread the day more for myself than for him.  Ive already scoped some visit-your-home vets so when the time comes, he won't have to make a stressful trip to the V-E-T (if I can have that much control of course, emergencies notwithstanding).  He's the first pet I have had on my own as a grown up, so its my first trip to the bridge, and Im inordinately attached to the idiot cat....  I dont wanna hurt!

yellowcat: Oh Sherpa, I'm so sorry. I had hoped you would have your white boy a little longer. He knows how much you loved him.

I've been on Fark for years, lurked since 2000, signed on in 2004, but Caturday is about the only time I ever post, I got TF for that reason. I remember the early Saturday Cat threads -- all the great photos posted by Sister Hand Grenade (those were fun on dial-up!) and Bessyglass. Caturday was a Saturday morning ritual for me and my late kitty Barclay. When he got sick (FU Cancer in humans & animals), the advice and sympathy I received from all of Caturday helped me prepare to help him cross over. We have two new kitties now who we love to death, but they'll never be another cat like Barclay for me & my husband.

My two favorite guys.

Now that you mention her, I'm reminded that  Sister Hand Grenade of Quiet Reflection is my favorite Fark handle.

/of ALL TIME

On a semi-related note, my girlfriend borrowed my house this weekend to have one of those parties where a gaggle of womenfolk get together and try to sell each other things (I gather this was a scrapbook-y sort of thing).  Naturally, I buggered off to visit some friends and play far too many board games.  When I returned, I found a small, red shutterfly box on the couch.  On it was written

"I got you something for Stud-Muffin's [the name she called Kay] b-day.  Love [name redacted]  (You're allowed to open early)"

This month would have been Kay's sixth birthday.  Inside was a photo album, with a miniature look back at Kay's life.  It got awfully dusty in here for a while.  It's now standing on the shelf behind his ashes, paw print, name-giving key, and green rope.

oh, I hear yah! And I love that you have already thought of an in home vet visit. I had my first "out of eedlock" cat for 15 yrs. she had to have help crossing over. Her companion died in her sleep, exactly 7 days later. I still do not know which was a more painful death for me..

sherpa18: This has obviously been a very brutal Caturday for many people and my sincerest condolences go out to you all.

Unfortunately, it is with a very heavy and broken heart that I have to add to the list as I had to help my white boy over the bridge a few hours ago. As much as I did not want to let him go, I knew in my heart that it was time - and the very least I could do for my faithful friend of almost 18 years was not to make him suffer for my sake.

He was always there for me through the years since he was a kitten - through sickness, family issues, job changes, money problems, divorce and relocation - and all he ever asked for in return was a few chin scritches, a lap to purr on and his gooshy food (and of course the occasional spicy chicken wing).

I would like to believe that I saw gratitude in his eyes as I held him while he slipped away, acknowledging that I was trying to return the favor and be there and do what I believed in my heart what was best for him.

There will never be another cat as special to me as my white one was. I know you will all understand, because in a very real way, Dragon belonged as much to Caturday as he did to me.

Once again, I thank you all for the love and support you have provided to me and the late fuzzy white boy over these many years. You have enriched our lives with your humor, comments and captions, and for welcoming us into the best family we could ever hope to be a part of.

Rest in peace, my dearest friend. Daddy will always love you, and never forget you. I already miss you so much.

Oh Sherpa, so many hugs and love to you. Dragon will always be the first Caturday cat for me. You did a brave and selfless thing letting him go and he loved you every single day knowing you'd always be there for him and he for you. You are a great cat Daddy.

tigerose: I hope this is not going to sound flip But I think, with all the losses this week, including our Venerated Dragon, we need an old fashioned Wake. At a Wake, we celebrate a person/critter's life. We tell tales that made us laugh and cry. And we honor them for the influence they have on our lives..

Please allow me to go first? I lurked for a looong time on Caturday. Pre Alien in fact. I never thought I would become part of all this wonderful family. When I de- lurked, it was Sherpa who encouraged me, and I loved the felines swanning over Dragon. I made " potato" toys for Dragon, and once in a while Eli the Bitey would send him toys that met his seal of approval. I even wrote a poem dedicated to Dragon, on his birthday, a few yrs ago. I feel priveleged to have " known" Dragon, even though I never met him.

* raises glass* here is to Dragon, and his faithful human slave. Thank you for gracing my Puurrsdays, and beyond. Rest. Bask forever in the light of our love Dragon. Be at peace dear sherpa.

Hear, hear! *raises lemonade*

Hugs right back to you. Don't dread the bridge. The Rainbow Bridge is actually Bifrost, which connects Asgard, where the gods dwell, to Midgard, where humans dwell. We know this because the lore calls Bifrost "the rainbow bridge". Bifrost is guarded by the great god Heimdall who will sound Gjallarhorn before the final battle. So imagine it - Heimdall is standing there, doing as he always does - throwing tennis balls and sticks for all the doggies that have made their way there over the years and always, always watching Midgard from his place at the end of the bridge. Suddenly, all the doggies stop playing and look across the bridge. The great god Heimdall looks up. Off in the distance, just on the other side of the bridge,a figure approaches! Heimdall raises Gjallarhorn to his lips and blows the mighty horn, the sound carrying across all of Asgard, raising the alarm.

Thor grabs his hammer, Odin his spear, Freyja readies her war chariot - all the gods and goddesses who live there stop what they're doing and prepare themselves for battle. The Einherjar leap from their feasting benches and grab their weapons, ready to march across Bifrost "600 abreast" and fight the approaching Jotun and dishonorable dead who have escaped the boundaries of Helheim. The figu ...

tigerose: Tried for light, got a hankie alert...
Sun Shines Brightly

The sun shines brightly,
Bathing recumbant felines,

In a heavenly glow.

Black is made
Chocolate brown,

White glows,
Illuminating the cat within.

Tigers bask,
As is their want.

Smoke gray,
Becomes the palest blue.

Cats lift their faces,
Sniff long.

Now is the time.

Leaping off treasured perches,
They gather.

Whisper.

Send their purrs,
Across Oceans.

Over Mountains.

To be heard by
Those bereft.

Sending sunbeams,
Warm fur.

Into those mourning
Souls.

A beam of light.

Into the darkness
Of their sorrow.

Reminding us,
The sun shines brightly.

As constant as
Our love for them,

And their love for us.
