if the point of this was just singing taps with an arm lowering gesture as opposed to doing a salute while maybe singing taps, then
1) why do few if any kids look like they are singing.
2) I count at least 4 kids who are doing the curled-in little finger salute.

A reverse google image search shows all news-sites seem to have pulled the photo, however they may have just told google not to index it. For example it is still here: http://www.washingtontimes.com/multimedia/image/correction-trail-life - boy-scoutsjpeg-081bfjpg/

If only there existed some balance to the news, such that seekers of a counterpoint to every point could salve their hurt feelings.

Jesus. They complain the media's too liberal, so they only watch Approved Media. Then they biatch about what that media that they won't watch does while also saying that the Fairness Doctrine is socialism from the pits of hell.

// that would make a tasty, tasty pretzel with many knots

Langston: Mr. Coffee Nerves: Ahh, yes, yet another nerves-of-steel True American who'll shoulder Paw's trusty Remington 860 and face down the ChiComs and the brainwashed armies of the lesbian liberal atheist Islamofascisocialisticommunists in the name of Reagan who instantly starts shrieking "Unfair! UNFAIR!" when the media doesn't do what he wants.

Did you read the article? I think the group is contemptible, but it sounds like of all the photos that the AP could have run, they chose the one where the angle of the arm made it look exactly like the kids were giving a Nazi salute. Since the AP has apologized, I'm going to presume that the guy has a point. I have no idea how the AP can say that they totally didn't see it since it looked like a Nazi salute to everyone else who saw it. I also don't know why they couldn't have replaced the photo with another one in a timely manner once they agreed that they had made a mistake. I highly doubt that the photographer went to the event and shot exactly one photo.

I don't like the splinter scout group, but their philosophy is pitiable enough. This gives a shred of credence to wingnuts, and I hate that.

Wish I could just quote your last paragraph only, but since I'm using a mobile device, I can't.

That being said, I think this describes any group with any agenda, meaning that we're all (yes, we, and yes, all) wingnuts, and we should all hate each other because we don't think the way you think, even if we have a reasonable philosophy.

But this is Fark, and there's no such thing as reasonable, right?

These kids don't fully comprehend why they're no longer Boy Scouts (if they even were to start with) and for that I'm truly sad. Not because I agree with the position BSA has taken, but because everyone will look at them and say, "Oh, you're part of *that* group! Bless your heart!" and not have a clue as to why.

Wonder when this will happen to Girl Scouts, and how loud *that* reaction will be.

So, conservaderp is upset that a series of photos, that very much look like they were taken in context and not just by holding down the autoshutter, calls out a group that thinks the Boy Scouts are too modern and progressive for what they are?  Oh, I'm so sorry that reality has a leftist bias, then.

oh no contest, the fundamentalist teen. They need to do bad things to live up to all the guilt they've been told to feel.

And if they need help with that, okay then.

I wish more were like that.

The problem is that many (if not the majority) of troops have churches as their chartering organizations, and have their flavor of religious derp shoved down their throats with extra derpy sauce in most cases.

Every one of these Trail Life troops fall onto that category.

Color me shocked at that.

I don't agree with your premise that anybody with a point of view is a wingnut. The wingnuts I was referring to were the Rush Limbaughs of the world who shriek all day that the liberal media is against them and use that as justification to refer their listeners (or readers) to hard-right news organizations who are the most imbalanced yellow journalists I've ever seen in an open democracy.

The AP ran a picture that looked like a right-leaning anti-gay boy scout troop was performing the Nazi salute. The error was pointed out to them, and they didn't correct it when they could have, and days later they apologized.  Giving a conspiracy theorist any little shred of confirmation makes them more entrenched, and grants them credibility that they don't deserve. People like Limbaugh will take this and make a meal of it, mark my words.

*sigh* funny, but I think churches have been raising their hands in praise, and a few going overboard and running around the room with their arms spread out like wings since before I was born.

Also, article needed more pictures in order to back their stance in comparison to the complainer.  Who said in article that the hands were raised higher than that probably vertical (aka raising hands in praise)then lowered slowly during the song.

On another note, if it is a salute. Then some people at sports games are doing the wave wrong by only using one arm.  The nazi bastards.

2014-03-06 06:34:39 PM
Article by Todd Starnes?

Since that doucheknuckle wrote TFA the reality is then probably that they were actually saying "Sieg heil" while giving the Nazi salute and spent all night talking about the best way to push Jews in to ovens while sewing stars of David on to armbands to make Jews wear.

2014-03-06 06:38:36 PM
Wow, I was a boy scout and hadn't a clue that taps actually had lyrics. Sure somebody played it on the trumpet while we saluted the lowering of the flag each night at scout camp, but I actually had to google the lyrics because we never sang them. Also never heard of a slow lowering of the arm, but I suppose it's plausible.

If a group of backwards arse country farks want to get together in the woods hate gays together while they camp and participate it rituals, it's no weirder than any other religion.

I don't disagree that Limbaugh will probably have a field day with it. But what if the tables were turned and Rachel Maddow was lambasting these boys for something taken out of context. *She* would then be a wingnut as well, right? Or would she get a pass due to being non-right leaning?

Or to the two or three kids in the group when they realize they are black. Nazis hate blacks just as much as they hate Jews.

Wasn't there also some kerfuffle about the Girl Scouts troupe allowing a transgender child to join?  I seem to remember at least one less tolerant Girl Scout tried to organize a boycott of their cookies in response to that decision, although I don't remember exactly when that happened.

My definition of wingnut is not limited to those on the right. I'm a political moderate, and I've been one for a long time. Maddow leans left, but if you're comparing Maddow to Limbaugh and saying that they're identical but for political ideology, I'm going to disagree pretty strongly.

If I'm not mistaken, the new group lets in closeted gay members.

Apparently mentioning being gay is the equivalent or raping a child to its founders.  Staying in the closet is cool... and that never leads to any problems... right?

They're faith based.  I'm pretty sure you can't join a synagogue or church unless you follow their religion.

I don't get the outrage against the group.  So they don't allow gays.  Why would a gay want to be around people like this?  If there's a group of assholes I'm not going to get upset if they won't let me join.  I know several MCs and most wouldn't let me in.  I have zero desire to join any of them but you won't see me throwing outrage parties over it.
