(Fox News)   Right wing commentator complains it is horribly unfair that AP used an actual photograph from a meeting of a splinter Boy Scout organization started by fundamentalist Christians that shows scouts giving a Nazi-style salute   (foxnews.com) divider line 153

Damn you AP!

Uhm, if they really were doing a slow hand lowering thing like he says (as though the flag is lowering, I assume), then he really has a point.

I think those kids are being exploited in a much crueler way by being indoctrinated with Christian bigotry, but that picture was bullshiat.

If they had a bunch of pictures of those kids and they were moving their arms around and that's the one they picked, yes, that is pretty low to run a picture of kids to make it look like they are giving a Nazi salute, even if they are being put into some sort of Boy Scouts knock off because their parents think the Boy Scouts are too liberal (Really?) or whatever. Those kids have enough problems.

It's was either that one or the one where they all posed next to the gas chamber. AP did what it could.

I'll just say that if I were picking a photo and trying to use it to associate someone with Nazis, I probably wouldn't pick one that includes a black kid as part of the group.

In any event, this is an organization strictly dedicated to being bigoted assholes. F*ck them, and f*ck the pwecious hurt feewings of their disgusting shills.

Ahh, yes, yet another nerves-of-steel True American who'll shoulder Paw's trusty Remington 860 and face down the ChiComs and the brainwashed armies of the lesbian liberal atheist Islamofascisocialisticommunists in the name of Reagan who instantly starts shrieking "Unfair! UNFAIR!" when the media doesn't do what he wants.

I have nothing against these trail boys. Their parents, on the other hand. . . .

Anyway, congrats, AP, on feeding these fundies' persecution complex. They will say they are being unfairly portrayed (and thus victimized), and in this case they'll be right.

On an aside, autocorrect changes fundies to fun dies. Make of that what you will.

2014-03-06 05:23:14 PM
The boys had gathered in a circle with their hands raised straight into the air. They gradually lowered their hands as they sang the song [Taps]. It concludes with their hands flush against their side.

OK, I'll buy that.

Well - about the unfair portrayal part.  Not the victimization part, they do that themselves.

"It really misrepresented what was going on," Stemberger told me. "There are children involved and that made it more outrageous. They were exploited and misunderstood."

You adults told them to do it. Is it unfair to mention nazi's? It was your f*cking picture. How did you fail to see it as opposed to everyone else who caught it immediately? We both know you didn't you just wanted to call yourself a victim of this obvious thing so you can to the heat off of your homophobia.

You know, I don't have a problem with this group existing. Haters are gonna hate. It is sad that they are going to try to pass their hate on to children but that is their parental right.

The scary thing is what is going to happen to the poor kid in this group who realizes he is gay (or is already gay when his parents force him into the group). Poor kid is going to suffer.

Did you read the article? The photo was misleading. The ceremony involved gradually lowering their arms from straight up to straight down (not inappropriate for 'taps'). The photographer chose the moment when the arms were at just the right angle to imply the Nazi salute. Deliberately misleading, and unethical.

Do try to keep up.

This says it all:. Narrow-minded evil bigots passing their evil down to their kids.

You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

So apparently a photograph that gives the impression that young boys are saluting Hitler (when in fact they were not) is not egregious enough for the Associated Press?

Not if it involves a religious group organized around anti-gay ideology. They are fair game, it seems.

So you mean to tell if you put a story out there (even if not completely true) and let it sit that it might give people the wrong impression and possibly lead to anger against a group or person? Someone should let the Tea Party know about this tactic.

Did you read the article? I think the group is contemptible, but it sounds like of all the photos that the AP could have run, they chose the one where the angle of the arm made it look exactly like the kids were giving a Nazi salute. Since the AP has apologized, I'm going to presume that the guy has a point. I have no idea how the AP can say that they totally didn't see it since it looked like a Nazi salute to everyone else who saw it. I also don't know why they couldn't have replaced the photo with another one in a timely manner once they agreed that they had made a mistake. I highly doubt that the photographer went to the event and shot exactly one photo.

I don't like the splinter scout group, but their philosophy is pitiable enough. This gives a shred of credence to wingnuts, and I hate that.

"And lest there be any confusion at AP headquarters,  anyphotograph that exploits children is egregious."

I don't disagree with Fox about this photo, but I also notice that this little tidbit of indignation is just begging to be quoted back at them.

Hey look,

We're just teaching these kids the same things they'd learn in the Scouts with a little extra intolerance in the name of Jesus and some light exposure to paranoid right-wing conspiracies. Quit trying to paint us as some sort of fringe movement.
