Yes. There was a hand recount. 0.1% were handed over to the labor camps.

durbnpoisn: So it's, vote for who we say over here, or get executed over there.
Either way, they have a good tab on their citizens.

Wow...  What a horror show that place is.

Yup, on Fark you only get accused of racism for failing to support the approved  politicians, movies, etc, etc.

The local school board sent around a poll that was like the junior league version of this.  All of the questions were like "Would you like little Johnny to have more artistic expression if we built a theater in his school?"  Or like "Would you like little Sally to be a better scientist by building a lab in her school?"

Of course everyone voted "yes" because what kind of person wouldn't?  "No, I want my kid to continue a humdrum grind ending in their inevitable death as a middle-level drone."

And yet everyone will be shocked when their taxes go up, again.

durbnpoisn: generallyso: naughtyrev: I was going to ask why they bother spending the money to hold elections that are clearly a sham, but when you double it as a census I guess it makes sense to have the people come to you, rather than you going to them.

It helps keep people docile even if the result of every election is simply more of the same. Works the same in any country.

If you're implying that the same is true for this country, let us examine that point...

In this country, you get to freely vote for whatever candidate is on the ballot.  That's what is popularly believed.  Yes, you can vote for one of the smaller parties.  But since they don't stand a chance of winning, you are effectively either giving a vote to the favored winner, or simply throwing it away.

The candidates for the BIG parties are chosen by those parties.  The closest thing you have to a say in who that will be, is being able to choose from their selections for who to choose.  Efectively simply narrowing it down, and nothing more.
In the end, you vote for who they allow you to vote for.

Other than the possibility of imprisonment for treason, it pretty much sounds exactly the same...

And other than the "being murdered by a crazed actor" thing, the time I saw   Our American Cousin at Ford's theater in DC was exactly the same as Abraham Lincoln's experience there

You have to admit, the excitement from voting in a polling center staffed with dozens of barely-restrained starving dogs beats our "school building staffed with old ladies" model any day of the week.

prison camp is a euphemism for murdered in their sleep and dumped in a shallow grave.
