I thought North Korea is a prison camp.

I was going to ask why they bother spending the money to hold elections that are clearly a sham, but when you double it as a census I guess it makes sense to have the people come to you, rather than you going to them.

I wonder if you could get away with writing in Kim Il-Sung?

prison camp is a euphemism for murdered in their sleep and dumped in a shallow grave.

They should do this on Survivor.  That dog of a show needs a breath of fresh air.

Actually, they should hold it somewhere cold.  Make it a *REAL* survivor show.  Maybe Elephant Island, just for the historicity of it.

You have to admit, the excitement from voting in a polling center staffed with dozens of barely-restrained starving dogs beats our "school building staffed with old ladies" model any day of the week.

True, I suppose he doesn't need the job. However, if a North Korean voted for him against the Party approved candidate (ostensibly as a protest vote disguised as Juche zeal), would the voter be in trouble?

I would love to see Survivor be what I originally thought it was going to be.  Basically a version of Survivorman or Naked and Afraid  that was also a competition.  Drop them off by themeselve somewhere remote with little or nothing in the way of tools, and the last one to cry "uncle" and ask for rescue gets $1 million

Either way, they have a good tab on their citizens.

This right after Crimea offers the Russian military personel the chance to hold a referendum on whether Crimea becomes a serf state of Russia.

Yea for people power.

I'm willing to bet such a show has been proposed to the networks. They're probably just concerned about how to get all the piss drinking past the censors.

It helps keep people docile even if the result of every election is simply more of the same. Works the same in any country.

Being "different" is not prized in Best Korea the way it is in the U.S. Attracting any sort of attention as a "nonconformist" or "free thinker" is not in one's best interest. Sarcasm and humor would have zero audience - only people who are quite happy to keep a very close eye on the person who clearly can't follow direction from the Party. A close eye at the very least.

If you're implying that the same is true for this country, let us examine that point...

In this country, you get to freely vote for whatever candidate is on the ballot.  That's what is popularly believed.  Yes, you can vote for one of the smaller parties.  But since they don't stand a chance of winning, you are effectively either giving a vote to the favored winner, or simply throwing it away.

The candidates for the BIG parties are chosen by those parties.  The closest thing you have to a say in who that will be, is being able to choose from their selections for who to choose.  Efectively simply narrowing it down, and nothing more.
In the end, you vote for who they allow you to vote for.

Other than the possibility of imprisonment for treason, it pretty much sounds exactly the same...

And other than the "being murdered by a crazed actor" thing, the time I saw   Our American Cousin at Ford's theater in DC was exactly the same as Abraham Lincoln's experience there

This part of the article shows how its not just for show....
"the government checks the list of voters and if your name is not on the list, they will investigate it. It is often during [an] election that the government finds out about defectors." She adds that defectors in China return to the DPRK just to register and vote, so that the government won't harm their families in retaliation for the defection.

The local school board sent around a poll that was like the junior league version of this.  All of the questions were like "Would you like little Johnny to have more artistic expression if we built a theater in his school?"  Or like "Would you like little Sally to be a better scientist by building a lab in her school?"

Of course everyone voted "yes" because what kind of person wouldn't?  "No, I want my kid to continue a humdrum grind ending in their inevitable death as a middle-level drone."

And yet everyone will be shocked when their taxes go up, again.

Camp 14 - Total Control Zone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXXDWc12fFw

A movie based on "Escape from Camp 14," the book about Shin Dong-hyuk who escaped from a North Korean prison camp. They also interviewed two former prison guards who defected to the south. You'll need a pretty tough stomach for this one. It's slow moving at times when they just keep the camera rolling while the guy tries to think of what to say next. Very well worth watching nonetheless.

It doesn't really form a census, since apparently they already made a census to figure out who should be on the list of voters in which provinces.

I'd rather they do a Nazi edition where only Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals, and Blacks are allowed to play and anybody voted out of the prison camp gets sent to the oven.

No, Survivor: Apocalypse Edition. We dump a group of people in a suitable area (Japan's "Battleship Island", certain sections of Detroit, some abandoned ghost town in northern Nevada, ect) and have them divide up into teams. Preferably this group would include a diverse range of occupations, such as Police Officer, Chemist, janitor, stuff like that. Anyway, then we just watch them try and survive, occasionally sending something to mess with them and provide a challenge to overcome (raiders, supplies stolen, ect).
