I'm impressed the author called out so many right-wingers. Hell, most of them are contributors to Politico.

It's like Politico, Slate, and Salon are in this death spiral competition for which site can produce the sh*ttiest political commentary that can be easily defeat by a college junior Poli Sci major.

Still not a single one of them has an alternative policy proposal.

I really wish we'd stop making every act of aggression by a foreign nation equivalent to Hitler's early land grabs.  Churchill was right about Hitler of course, but that situation just hasn't repeated itself since then.  It's like people are searching desperately for the next Hitler, but that person really doesn't exist today.*

*Well, maybe Kim Jong-Un, but NK doesn't have anything remotely close to the military and economic power necessary for world domination and genocide.

You'd think that Obama would suffice for that purpose.  Or at least, that's what these clowns usually do when there isn't a foreign concern.

"Unless Barack Obama is even a weaker president than he appears to be"

Not an auspicious beginning there, champ. There are plenty of legitimate criticisms of Obama, but "he's too weak" just isn't one of them - unless you're the sort of fool who can listen to the recent statements by the likes of Giuliani or Palin without laughing in sheer disbelief.

Wooly Bully: There are plenty of legitimate criticisms of Obama, but "he's too weak" just isn't one of them

It depends on what day it is, and how the spinner lands. I haven't seen if today's theme is "Obama's weak," "Obama's a iron-handed dictator," "Obama's an idiot," or "Obama's a criminal mastermind." Obama Derangement Syndrome takes many forms, and legitimate criticisms were lost a long time ago with the yelling of Tea Party spokesman Gabby Johnson.

Not to mention that Obama's being weak and feckless varies by the day. Today he's a wimp who couldn't beat an infant in an arm wrestling match. Tomorrow he's a totalitarian monster who crushes all dissenters into a fine powder.

I remember when Politico used to be a good source of articles on politics in the US. These days I mainly just scan the article titles to find out what issue du jour the politics wonks are obsessing over.

I think the 2012 elections broke them. They are trying to maintain that level of excitement every day of every year. as a result, every single minor incident gets sensationalized to almost tabloid levels.

There's nothing wrong with thinking that America is exceptional, but when you use it as a political battering ram to disparage opponents (e.g. by suggesting that they don't 'believe' in it), it becomes shallow and meaningless.

All those come under the umbrella "Obama is always wrong." If he lets something slide, he's a weak empty suit. If he shows authority, he's a dictator worse than Hitler. But whatever he does, he's wrong.

2014-03-06 08:58:59 AM
This whole "Obama is weak because he did not prevent this" trope is just the latest symptom of ODS.  Putin's always wanted to get the ol' gang back together and he doesn't give a fark what the US thinks regardless of whose president.

If you haven't seen the documentary "The Putin System" it's well worth the watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5Rkom1RpKA

It also depends on the degree of exceptionality claimed and how it can turn into a one-upping contest of who thinks America is more exceptional.

"I think America is the best country on the planet!"

"Oh yeah? Well, I think America is the best country in the entire galaxy!"

Yea, that's true. I posted my comment before reading TFA (I had just looked at it's headline... the real one, not the Fark headline). Now that I've read it, it does make some good points, in particular the bit about selective memory of history or outright re-writing of it.

I'd also like to echo what HotWingConspiracy said....

Naah, it's pretty predictable.  If it's domestic policy like NSA spying or hiking taxes he's a totalitarian monster.  But foreign policy he's weak and feckless.    Don't worry though, he's trying to get NATO to send out a strongly worded letter.

Actually you are wrong. When Clinton was incharge we were quite exceptional and lead the world in many areas and it is more of a strong leader who is in charge than a backseat passenger waiting for others to "charge the  hill" and then walking up afterwards claiming his strength.

The irony of this statement is that Victoria's Secret's early success is mostly attributable to a "no judgement atmosphere" rule they enforced to help make people more comfortable shopping for lingerie.  (this has no bearing on the current state of their marketing)

Well, and also keep in mind that Chamberlain wasn't the fool/pussy that many in history like to accuse of him.  The fact is that the British military was horribly outdated when Hitler started knocking off nations.  Their tanks sucked, their airforce sucked, their navy was large but out of date, their infantry weapons sucked, etc.  Chamberlain saw that and ordered the largest military revamp and defense spending increases in British history.

I just love that Republicans who use "Communist" as the ultimate insult are lining up to fellate Vladimir Putin on this issue, just because it makes Obama look bad.  Y'know, Obama, the guy they said was the ultimate Commie sympathizer a few times?
