And speaking of new games (threadjack sorta), I'm loving the new Thief that's just been released. Menu interface isn't the greatest, but still...very creepy in the right places.

I've been on the fence about that one, is it a throw back to the original trio?  Because they were fantastic for their story and game play.

It's been over half a century... it might be time to talk about it.  It may be tough to admit that most all of you Germans that lived through it were either Nazis or Nazi sympathizers.  Accept it and move on.

2014-03-06 12:17:23 PM
Oh no, all those poor Germans. We know everyone else in the world can handle nazi imagery used in satirical fashion, but the poor little Germans just aren't up to the challenge. It's a shame they are so mentally weak and frail; if anyone ever decided to build a stronger humanity the Germans would get excluded.

Having worked on video games that had some hilarious changes made to them for the German shelf version, I'm getting a real kick...

What most peeps don't know when they hear about the rules for Germany, though, is that games get censored for shelf copies.  If you're in Germany, and you want the full, unchanged deal, they'll be behind the counter, and you can ask for it.

FTA:
"Take Americans, for example. We straight up murdered tens of thousands of Native Americans and then had the balls to refer to our policy as our "Manifest Destiny." Now we have football teams filled with the decendents of African slaves playing under the moniker of our Native American victims so we can sell beer to everyone else. And, sure, when you really think about it that way, it isn't funny."

I loved this game. Finished in 17hrs.. Extremely entertaining and no game breaking bugs.. Great release for a video game in an industry that usually sends out half broken games at release and spends a better part of the next 3 months patching it

I was half-heartedly skimming the article when I got to the part where the writer admonished Germany to get over it and stop being so sensitive about the Holocaust, because hey...the past is the past and a joke is a joke.

Made me wish that we could get more black-face, lynching and cross-burning jokes over here in the US.

It's sorta a throw back the same way Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 is a throw back to Sonic CD. They both had good music, they both featured Sonic... they both, um, are video games? In other words, don't get Thief expecting  Thief: The Dark Project or even Thief II: The Metal Age. It's a lot closer toThief: Deadly Shadows.

I've recently had to make the argument that the Holocaust has been used as such a drum that we've allowed more genocidal activity in the past 70 years to go unchallenged and unremembered. I've been throwing out there that ethnic death squads and village clearing in the Ukraine is right on the horizon, but no one with the power to prevent it will move until it's already happened.

What many Americans don't get is that America has a long history of devotion to a number of 'rights' that really don't get the same traction in Europe. Notably, freedom of expression, speech and religion. We view these rights as sacrosanct and 'creator derived.' They don't. The US has far more social restrictions on such things, but far fewer legal ones. As was mentioned, socially it's suicide in the US to go around with blackface, but the cops aren't going to beat down your door for doing it.

I completely fail to see his point of throwing that in there - he makes a connection - we have embarrassments in our history as well...Is he being sarcastic when he says thinking about it that way isn't funny?  Because it's an acceptable form of humor to use that method of making a connection of twisting history for profit.  Some owners of teams/stadiums exploit the intimidating factors of history's victims for profit.  And even if he's being sarcastic, what's his point?

I didn't like it.  There's too much "on rails" portions of the game.  The fun of the original games is that you could take numerous paths to accomplish your objective.  The new game limits your freedom to the point that it gets a little boring.  You HAVE to go one way through parts of a level and that's the only way to go through it.  It cuts down on the exploratory feel of the game a little bit.

You are allowed to configure the gameplay to mimic the original series, so that's worth something.  Still, I'd wait for it to hit the bargain bin - it's not worth full price.

FTA: Let me say this first: I get you, Germany. The embarrassment over the systematic murder of an enormous Jewish, homosexual, and gypsy population isn't the kind of sting that goes away easily. But here's a piece of advice: limiting symbols and speech in this manner isn't productive and certainly isn't in the spirit of the 86a section of the Strafgesetzbuch. Attempting to limit humor regards to your own past won't get you anywhere. Open dialogue is what admonishes fascism.

Think of it as the German equivalent of yelling 'FIRE!' in a crowded theater except that unlike exuberant shouts about non-existent fires the Nazis actually killed vast numbers of people. That said,

After the tantrum he threw last night, I might consider it. Ha.

He's normally very good, but I think the combination of moving, terrible two's and the end of the pacifier a week ago are making it a very trying time.
