"The driver, a private contractor for the Postal Service, was uninjured."

You people realize this crap is just gonna get worse as they privatize right?

IT'S AN EFFING SERVICE FOR CHRISSAKES. This ain't a business model.  It's not supposed to turn profits.  Check out how much more lobbying money UPS and Fedex have poured into the government while all this bs "post office is broke" nonsense has been going on.  Seriously.

Congress steals all this money left and right, whether it's excess USPS profits or Social Security or whatever, so as to make their budget look slightly less insane.

AM I THE ONLY ONE SEEING THIS?  IT'S LIKE I'M ON CRAZY PILLS!  WHAT IS THIS, A POSTAL SERVICE FOR ANTS!?!!??!?!?!? GEEEEEEZZZZZZ

I hear there's always money in the banana stand.  Also, while I think you're right, you really do need to take your crazy pills.

Whoa there buddy.  Rather than have USPS and Fedex and UPS and DHL and every other shipping service on the same route, sometimes they just piggy back on each other, and sometimes it's just cheaper to hire a trucker to haul the load rather than setup logistics for all jillion miles of roads in the US

Yeah... About that. I mailed in my state (CA) tax forms on Tuesday. From the 92821 area code. So I'm really hoping that it was full of netflix envelopes - or it's going to be kind of awkward on April 16th.

Troll-like outrage detected, but what the heck:

The USPS has been using contractors for decades to move the U.S. Mail, both by ground and air. USPS contracts at all level, from the on in the article, to local mail carriers. At one time, if you sent a first-class latter going over 600 miles, it probably wound up on a U.S. Airline.

Also, FTA:  The cause of the crash is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol. No info on whose fault the crash was.

Although I agree with you that mail is an essential service, you must keep in mind that the post office does not have a vast reserve of truck drivers, and will pay private truck drivers to haul large trailers on their downtime.

Reminds me of one of my dad's stories.  He worked for the USPS for a while, before his drinking started costing him jobs, and he almost had his jeep catch on fire.  A wire in the dash for part of heating system, likely a fan wire, started burning one day.  He pulls over and shuts it down and the fire stops, so he calls it in.  The mechanic shows up and ask my dad to start the jeep back up, and my dad refused.  He said it wasn't going to be his butt if the jeep catches on fire, taking the mail with it.  So, he takes a wire snip from the mechanic and cuts the wire, then finishes his route.  Dad said the mechanic was one of those, 'great mechanic on paper, but couldn't find a wrench without a schematic'.
