(EpicTV)   The really fun thing about ice climbing is that once in a while the entire climb breaks off and plummets to the ground--with you still attached to it. Here's what that looks like when it happens to you   (epictv.com) divider line 34

There seems to be some modifications done in that car.
I spot a couple bolt-ons.

This guy was absolutely retarded to climb that. Theres Extreme and then there's extremely stupid. Thing just looked like it was going to crack off when there wasnt someone driving an ice pick into it.

There was a certain Wile E Coyote vibe when he was hacking at the extremely brittle thing that was supporting his weight.

I really wasn't that bad, most people don't realize how incredibly strong ice actually is.  The biggest issue is that it appeared to be a warm day, the ice was wet and weeping.  Warm ice is a bit plastic, and moves a bit.  Very cold ice is brittle.  He probably would have had no problems if the day was 10 degrees colder.  You could suspend a car from that pillar if it was 'good' ice.

/going climbing this weekend.

Am I the only person who watched him hacking at the point were the vertical ice connected to the horizontal ice and thought, "Well, that's a really stupid thing to be doing"?

He's the acme of Darwinism. Or will be, shortly. "I went climbing the next day!"

Interesting - why do people use the comparative "safer" when they really should use "safest".

I caught that too. Well, maybe not 'stupid' but 'is that a good idea?'

If you know enough climbers, you might distinguish between the group in the top 50% of safety, but not in, say, the top 5%. So saying he's among the safer climbers you know but not the safest might be a more accurate classification.

Safest would be not climbing at all. Everyone has a different tolerance of risk, myself I stay away from daggers and thin pillars, mostly because they are far beyond my ability. Even if they were I would be more inclined to climb more curtain like features and classic gullies, personal preference.

This.

Also, first half of video: "This is a really safe climber, he does everything right."
Second half of video: "You can see how thin and unstable the ice was as I started to chip it away."
Conclusion of video: "Here dude, I'm not sure if your back is broken or not, but I ran and got some cocoa."

That fracture in the ice was clear as day after the second or third swing at it. He wasn't paying attention to it.

I was wondering the same thing. I remember chasing down the backstory to that GIF once and the consensus was dude was an idiot for climbing it too late in the season.

Well, at least he has those ropes going to the ground. It would be a real disaster if the ice broke, and at that exact moment gravity reversed and he just shot up into the sky.

I don't think that's the same event, but I could be wrong. I've been wondering the same thing, so please do tell if you find the back story.

Well, be careful. If its 45 degrees and the ice is dripping. Best bet is to stay off.
