I was told by some people from Nova Scotia in 1993 when Quebec was making similar noises about seceding that the Maritimes would just apply for statehood if that happened.

The militantly french Canadians have never been able to muster a majority on these referendums. They won't now either.

teenage mutant ninja rapist: I think it's time the rest of canada held a referendum on if we should even let quebec stay in canada.

We should hold a referendum to see if we should allow Quebec to hold any more referendums about this issue.  Seriously.  How much do these things cost every 10 years or so?

I always wanted to go to the border between Ontario and Quebec and change that big "Welcome to Ontario" sign on the side of the 401 to say "Welcome to Canada" (to match the ones at the US border).

I only wonder how long the jail sentence would be -- they might throw the book at me for 10 years for Public Mischief -- but I think I'd have a good defense under the Freedom of Expression clause of the charter -- after all, if that's not political expression, I don't know what is. :-)

Never had the balls to follow through with it.

While the pea soup-eaters will never actually have les balls to secede, if it did happen, I think that would make some sense for the maritimes. It would be pretty shiatty to just cut them off physically from the rest of Canada like that.

real_headhoncho: Again?

Yup, just like every time that separatist party gets a reelection. Problem is they're not confirming or denying they'll do a referendum on separation... The last 18 months have been a mess, they put environmental activists at the ministries of environment and natural resources. Small changes scared all the mining companies away...  Finance minister forgets amounts in his budgets and attempts to turn some ministries into agencies ( thus sending them away from the general auditor) .

Finally... School taxes got a 18 to 40% hike, after the school boards were forced into another heavy round of cuts. Education ministry allowed them to raise taxes to compensate, which they did. Then the prime minister tries to fake her outrage when the tax form get to people...

Basically.. Incompetent government.

It's been 19 years since the last referendum, FWIW, and the only other one was 15 years before that.

I would believe this if the Maritimes weren't almost completely dependent on federal transfers to maintain their standard of living.  As it is, though, there's no way any thinking Maritimer would vote to move to a more conservative, and less federal-transfer-friendly government.

Go ahead, I'd love to see that happen. Get on it, Alberta!

I love to hear the rest of Canada biatching and moaning about the separatists' failed attempts at making Québec a country. Even after all these years, they still hold onto that pipe dream. It's more comical than infuriating, really.

Maybe it is time for Canadians as a whole to band together and kick us out for good, then you'd never again have to see this in your news cycle! You'd get to keep more of your hard earned money! Wouldn't that be awesome? Wouldn't you love to see our faces when you roll up and say "Look, we got tired of you guys making up your minds about leaving, so we just pulled our federal assets from your territory, changed the locks and shut off your gravy train. Good luck out there!"? I bet you would. So why wait?

they depend too much on federal transfers, employment insurance reform is hitting them hard.
Quebec is also one of the provinces getting more from the federal than what they pay. No one really knows how the finances of a sovereign Quebec would go.

2014-03-05 01:28:11 PM
It'll never happen.  If they think the Quebec economy is sluggish now, it'll evaporate if the province leaves Canada.  The only factor I see encouraging it federally would be that the Conservatives would probably like to see Quebec leave since that's really the only thing standing between them and majority governments for the next couple of decades (barring Stevie Sweatervest's losing control of keeping the fringier elements of his party more or less contained).

However, if Trudeau can manage to resurrect the Liberals and not make anymore Ukraine jokes for the next year or so, this will probably all blow over.

2014-03-05 01:28:18 PM
Well... bye

Oh! But before you leave, I think we need to have a chat about reorganizing those borders of yours, you know, to pre-Confederation sizing.
Oh! And be sure to pay off your portion of the national debt.
And the Armed Forces will be taking all their equipment back.
And we'll just pull all federal funding out, including pensions, health care, education, social services, defense, the arts, tourism...
Also, I'm pretty sure the Americans will be wanting to talk to you about the St Lawrence Sea Way, they kind of like it to operate without meddling.

So yeah, have fun guys.

Considering their current exports, internal economy and reliance on fed money, I'd reckon it would float as well as an iron balloon.... perhaps even a lead zeppelin.

Not to mention the Seaway and Churchill Falls.  It would be a race to see if they froze or starved to death first.
