Yeah, that will end well for Russia. Nothing bad will happen if they frighten foreign companies into pulling all of their assets out of the country.

Subby; I think Russia has a bit to lose by scaring off foreign companies.

It all works out for the US military-Industrial Complex in the end. Poland wants to talk about missile defense systems again.

Yeah, you gotta wonder if something bad might happen to Putin if he stops being useful to the Russian oligarchs and mobsters. If he starts being bad for business, I could see them making a move against him, especially if he has become unstable like Merkel says.

Yeah, pretty much this. If Russia seizes foreign assets, they'll never be able to convince anyone to invest in them again. That'd pretty much be the best way to make sure their economy implodes and doesn't recover for at least a generation.

I dunno man China's actually pretty lucid about where all the good cheese is coming from.  China and the US are extremely symbiotic at this point.  If anyone has to worry about China it'll be Japan.

American companies were stupid for investing in Russia in the first place. It was obvious that even without Communism, they were going to become belligerent buttholes anyway. Now they don't even have the pretense of Marxism caring for everyone's needs.

This would mainly be good for their business.  It would involve seizing the assets of their foreign-based competition and selling it to them on the cheap.

Putin is doing a wonderful job of driving the Ukraine directly into the hands of the west.

If Russia is so awesome how come everyone wants to join the EU and NATO?

2014-03-05 12:23:50 PM
So let's get all Beckish and study this out.

UN, led by US, imposes economic sanctions on Russia.

Russia counters by seizing US and EU corporate assets in Russia.

Said corporations pull out of Russia and others decide it's too risky and/or stockholder unfriendly to invest in Russia.

Well, the state (in a manner of speaking) still has Gazprom soooo... good luck with that.

odinsposse: Yeah, that will end well for Russia. Nothing bad will happen if they frighten foreign companies into pulling all of their assets out of the country.

Freezing the assets of EU companies in Russia. Yeah, because the EU won't just do the same to Russians if they're pissed, ie. what they did to bank accounts holding Russian money in Cyprus.

The nasty thing about economic wars is that the treshold to using economic weapons is much lower. And that Russia is very small and weak compared to the EU in that arena.

So all in all, yeah, good luck with that Russia.

Maybe Putin has early-onset dementia or something and nobody dares do anything about it.

In this scenario, Putin thinks the USSR still exists, and as a Communist country.  And because of the reputation Putin has as a ruthless leader, nobody dares challenge him on it.

2014-03-05 12:24:59 PM
If that statement isn't mitigated today, their markets run the risk of crashing tomorrow.  The sound you'll hear will be every foreign currency in their country being violently yanked out of every bank, fund, and company in Russia the second they open for business.

Who do you think paid those companies to come in with their equipment/men/expertise?  Putin?

Ask the old USSR how much fun it was working with outdated equipment manned by men with no experience or talent for the work at hand.

I recall reading somewhere that we could really fark up Russia's economy not with sanctions but by flooding the oil market with our strategic reserve because Russia's economy is heavily invested in oil. If we got Saudi Arabia on board with that plan, we could throw them into a bad recession. It would hurt Russia's buddies, Iran and Venezuela too.

Lavrov repeated Putin's denial that Russian troops are in control in Crimea, saying the troops in question are "self-defense" forces over whom Russia has no control.

So we could shoot them without consequences, right?

Meh. Could always blame the resulting economic collapse to rally the people against those who instituted the sanctions and start a war. It's been done before

Sounds like it is time for America and European countries to pull all assets out of Russia and stop doing any business with them.  It is probably also a good idea to deport everyone on a Russian passport.

They want to be a 3rd world country?

Let them.

There was conflicting reports for a while. I'm wondering who the gunmen were. UA militia or Russians

I'm guessing all militia has been disarmed, already.
