Seven min is pretty close. But when I was reading the headline I thought it was going to say 7 meters. That would be close.

2014-03-05 09:03:36 AM
Uh, seven minutes seems like a long time for two objects flying at high speeds through the air.

2014-03-05 09:05:08 AM
North Korea has one friend in the world and they nearly hit one of their airliners with a missile?
Smooth move, guys.

2014-03-05 09:05:20 AM
Wow, 7 minutes. That's like 20 feet or something like that.

2014-03-05 09:06:19 AM
I can see China sacrificing a plane full of people for the opportunity to put a boot up Best Korea's ass.

2014-03-05 09:06:53 AM
At 500 mph, 7 minutes is 58.3 miles. They could have missed them by this much with a nuclear warhead and they'd be okay.

No kidding, almost half!

7 min is 7/60 or 0.11Hours.  At 350 m/h, that comes up to about 40.8 miles.

Still to close for comfort though, and the N Koreans are dicks for doing this in an area used by commercial traffic.

But it's Chinese, so that's ok.

Yeah, it woulda been awesome if it had hit a chinese passenger plane. Uncle MAO would land on Best Korea and spank that bratty kid in no time.

Normally countries conducting missile tests announce them well beforehand with impact zones, flight paths released to prevent such accidents.

/Best Korea obviously isn't normal.

533 mph is closer to correct, since that airline flies lots of Airbus 330 variants.

I made a wild guess.  But that makes it a worst case scenerio: a faster jet would have been farther away.

It's probably flying in the left hand lane with the left blinker on before it suddenly swerves right and cuts across 3 lanes of air traffic.

Then again, China, on behalf of North Korea, would've made reparations to the families of those who died.

Worse would've been that missile hitting either a plane headed for South Korea or Japan.  THAT would've raised such a massive shiatstorm that not even China would be able to contain it.  China would've condemned NK and washed their hands of them at that point...maybe.

You know what I'd be interested in seeing?

The Chinese reaction when a few prototype North Korean missiles head the wrong direction and hit populated cities in China.  Bonus points for nukes.

I have to believe that the response would be simple, direct, and impossible for western society to consider, and result in making the world a safer place.

/ I've seen "Spies like Us" - get 'em in there.

7 minutes is a timeframe where a comically low-tech NK missile operator could look at their radar, look around overhead, and yell an all-clear to fire because there is nothing to hit.

I'd be more worried about them being unable to detect/aim well enough to miss random boats downrange. Or taking nighttime flights, just in case they really are primarily relying on eyeballs to tell what's in the air.

The ultimate "NK is farked beyond belief scenario":  Test nuke is heading towards Beijing.

NK's leadership would probably do a Jonestown right then and there.

Sometimes wonder what it would take for China to finally had enough of NKs shiat.

Right, but in order to do that it would have to reach several hundred miles above the Earth's surface and be detonated at the right time.  Which would require much more precision than they have proven capable of thus far.

Also that would disable any nearby satellites, so anyone launching such an attack would most likely be looking at some collateral damage.

Ummm... No. They have managed to put something in orbit already, thereby meeting the "hundreds of kilometers" requirement, and we are talking about the Norks here. They don't exactly have anything else to collaterally damage, do they? Sure, they can piss off china, but they don't care about anyone else. The only thing stopping them now is a flimsy hope that they don't figure the timing out correctly for a attack to hit the most advantageous spot in the target country.

That's nothing, yesterday I was going through an intersection and less than 10 seconds later a car went through exactly where I had been walking...close call.
Still, fark NK.
