I can't honestly say I haven't... It'll put hair on his chest.

Ah, no.  When I get dark thoughts about all the child abandonin' I tend to stray towards the bottom of the outhouse.

Yeah abandoning your kids in the woods is pretty old school.

Seriously, it was common practice during some periods, hence the story.

If we let all the pedophiles out of prison our country wouldn't have this problem of kids being left alone in the woods.

Stories like this leave me feeling sick at heart.
Those poor children.
The parents need help, and lots of it.

/But part of me wants to punish them for abandoning helpless children.

Ok, OK. Yeah, let the ten year old maybe. But a six year old? In Florida? Eaten by gators and noseeums within the hour.

Florida gators are endangered species, humans are not. Their parents are simply doing their part to curtail the gators' disappearance from this planet.

No, the story was the kids were abandoned in the forest. They were more often in the stew pot.

Cannibalism did happen yes, but they also abandoned them too.

/I don't think the candy houses were all that common though

How else you supposed to train your kids to compete in the hunger games?

Isn't it cruel to not give them this sort of survival training? The mistake seems to have been leaving them in an area they knew.

There's a HUGE difference between daydreaming about the peace and quiet that would result and actually abandoning them.

Like someone said upthread - the parents were probably high as shiat and forgot they had the kids with them.

Yeah, unless he finds the hair just kind of lying around and decides "This belongs on my chest." puberty is kind of a given. It doesn't really matter what you do, it'll kick off when it kicks off.

I have him eating seaweed and drinking whisky. He'll be a manly man with a thick, wild mane and manly tufts of hair on his chest. Like his dear old dad.

I actually knew a guy who'd been sent for three days into the woods to live to "live off the land" as a kid. His dad was a survivalist creep.
Yep, it damaged him. He ended up discovering drugs & they helped a bit, but not all that much. He still has trust issues.

Disregard all the misinformation about meth and prior arrest in TFA.  These people were actually reviving the ancient Spartan tradition of Agoge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agoge), the military-centric education given to all young male Spartans.

I was abandoned in the woods as a child, it helped me out immensely.  Without that experience I would never have become a successful author.

It's only not cruel if you don't leave them with a blunt knife and a hunk of salt. Provide them any more or less, and you're back into cruel parenting territory.

At least that's according to the Russian scouts.

I'm thinking 'abandonment in the woods' is likely a more charitable act than remaining tethered to a couple of meth addicts. Though Florida's freakin' DCF record makes survival in the woods seem like the better option, if I had to be the kids in this scenario.
