Thomas is UFA at the end of the season, so you know he's leaving.

Well that sucks. Hopefully Rev can teach me how to accept having a team that isn't going to make the playoffs for a while.

Now the Panthers just have to trade him back to the Isles to complete the circle of life.

(sorry Nucks fans)
I like this trade for Luongo, he's wanted out for 2 years, and between the new 'super' agent this year and the new deeper pocketed owner in FLA (where his wife is from, where he summers)  It finally got done.  That has to be a massive monkey off his back.  Look for Lu to get back to gold medal form before the end of the season and look for the Panthers to make a way better playoff push next year.
It remains to be seen whose story is closer to the truth, and mostly it doesn't really matter, but Lu not playing Sunday was either because he was already in play, or the final straw that put him in play.

I thought it was kinda funny, Kesler wants out too, and the Rangers had expressed some interest, and he exercised his no trade.  Guess he wasn't a fan of Alain Vigneault?

Considering what the Panthers gave up for him I'm wondering if ol' Mike was involved with this one too.

As much as I'm sure this sucks for Canucks fans (Lu was supposedly set to start tonight @ Phoenix before the trade happened), it's a trade that should've happened last year. He didn't want to be there anymore and the Canucks didn't want his contract anymore. They needed to be separated for everyone's sake. Luongo now gets to play in a place where he's wanted and is comfortable and the drama is over.

Of course, this begs an important question: how much longer can Mike Gillis be allowed to be the Vancouver GM? He had 2 starting goaltenders last year and now, he has none. The Schneider to New Jersey trade at last year's draft now looks about 800 times dumber than it did when it happened and I didn't like the move when it happened. At this point, the Canucks are a bigger dumpster fire than any the rioters set 5 years ago. They seem to be as rudderless as Calgary was up to the start of this season.

Good for Luongo.

What's the plan now for the Canucks? That roster isn't going to win a Cup, so who do you pick to build around? Are the Sedins really the core of a Cup-winning roster?

I think the next 16 hours have a fair bit to do with that, and if the Nucks stay out of the playoffs this year, I wonder if Torts is unemployed at the end of the season too.

/just spit balling, but how about Kadri and Reimer ++ for Kesler and the newly arrived Markstrom ?

They can be if Vancouver would give them something to work with besides patchwork lines.  If they're not going to commit to bringing in a stronger support group they may as well trade them now and be done with it.

Torts is this generation's Mike Keenan. He's not there to reload, he's there to blow things up. The Sedins can play out their careers because they're local legends, but everyone else can go -- especially Kesler and Edler. Drop out, hit rock bottom, wipe the slate clean. Move all assets for prospects and picks. Get rid of anyone over 30 and keep anyone under 25. Build from the draft, get a new regime, build another contender. Who knows, if they tank the right way, they may win the Connor McDavid sweepstakes.

And they may be back on top of the league in a few years. And that would piss Flames and Oilers fans right the fark off.

Does Buffalo have anything Vancouver wants in particular? They do have a trove of picks. I would be so sad to see Halak in Vancouver, but it's been said that he's just trade bait anyway

I hope Luongo does well in Fla., his pathos actually got to me over the past two years.

I think they only have 4 years left on their contracts, I'm not sure you can tear it apart and rebuild that fast.  Maybe just a semi tear down?

Please please please get rid of the Sedins next. They're like Jim Kelly or Karl Malone -- they'll get you far enough to contend for the championship, but they'll break your heart in the end.

Wouldn't have happened anyway. Vancouver wanted Callahan, 1rd pick, and a prospect for Kesler.

Given that Kesler is a marginal improvement over Callahan..

Not even Slats is that dumb. He's only that dumb in free agency.

I still can't figure out why the blues made the deal to start with. Unless theres something else going on I thought the Blues were one of the strongest teams in net. I've always thought Miller was overrated tho.

Semi tear downs don't work. That promotes decades of mediocre futility (cf. the Leafs). You need to crater hard, like Chicago and Pittsburgh did, and then build from the blue-line out through the draft, like Edmonton did not.

Well, Miller is an upgrade, no matter how good Halak was, but I really have to wonder at the cost.  If STL makes it to the conference finals, they will have given up 2 first rounders, a prospect, and two players (one of which was a UFA after this season) in return for two rentals.  It all hinges on getting Miller re-signed.

Well, that worked out well for Vancouver. Trade Schneider and then less than a year later trade Luongo, anyway.

As surprising as that move was, Bryzgalov to Minnesota was equally unexpected. Not that it will have the same impact or anything, just that it was not a move anyone was talking about. Everyone knew Minnesota was hunting a goalie, but the conventional wisdom was that it would be Brodeur or Halak.

Also of note is that Washington 4th round pick. That it was enough to get Penner is interesting, but then the Ducks turned around and used it to get Robidas. I look forward to Dallas using it today to acquire Stafford. And beware the guy drafted with it. He's going to be magic.

After the Panthers lost to the Bruins on Tuesday night, Thomas was asked about the trade and possibly partnering with Luongo -- Thomas could still be traded, he's going to meet with GM Dale Tallon before the deadline. In the midst of his interview he had a gem of a quote.

"Dale went kicking tires and found one that needed to be pumped."

They will both be fine, both are goofing on each other on Twitter etc.   Good for Luongo. The Canucks are making BFLO look like a well managed organization at this point. Once the Pens grab Kesler their teardown will be complete and Gillis can show the world the power of his not quite fully armed and operational hockey team.

His recovery is remarkable, given the stress goalies put on their hips. Rinne will always be one of my favorite net-minders.

There is still twitter chatter this morning about St. Louis to the Rangers, but I really don't know how that is going to happen.  Callahan and the Rags are close to agreeing on a contract, which if that gets done, should put that deal off for the season anyway.
Buffalo still has a whack of assets that can move.  Moulson to LA (?)
Kesler wants out of Vancouver, but the price may be too high for anyone interested. And he has a no trade, so there may only be a team or two he's interested in anyway.
There was some suggestion last night that Edmonton might swing something big-ish to balance the team a bit and get some D.  That would be building for the future, 'cause there is no way in hell they are in the play-offs this year...
And Columbus is shopping Gaborik...
Toronto has a few weak spots and would love to shore up, but Nonis says he's not prepared to mortgage the future for a few extra playoff games, but if I were him, I'd be looking for a top 4 D.

4 year extensions for $7M per each.  And they go as a pair...  Not too many teams able to swing a $14M cap hit.

I know players have hot streaks and cold streaks, but in the Stanley Cup Finals, when it got tough, that guy looked like he was ready to have a nervous breakdown.  He helped get them there, yes, but I wouldn't feel very good about having him on my team at all, nevermind the money.

Thanks for the clarification, sno man. I knew there was a 7 in there somewhere. I agree with your point that few teams would be willing to take them. They're a pretty good set, but an expensive one.

St. Louis for Callahan is a huge loss for Tampa.  St. Louis is the heart of Tampa, but I guess it speaks volumes to the toxicity of the St. Louis-Yzerman relationship that this is even being rumoured.
