Of course not. That means the hammer is forward and the gun can't fire. It's totally safe at that point.

I have no idea.  I didn't see any of the childrens behavior.  I bet you didn't either.  The teacher was the only witness, if we're to believe them.

But it doesn't change the fact that zero tolerance policies are completely and utterly retarded.

There's always one guy in these threads going "B... but what about muh RULLLES?"

And 10 year olds are known for their ability to model their behavior to conform to arbitrary adult standards.  That's why they make such good witnesses in a court of law.

Public schools are completely and utterly retarded, and zero tolerance is just the icing on the two neuron cake.

THIS!

Look for the union label!

Don't blame the unions for this one. This is solely the fault of helicopter parents and braindead administrators who push this type of bullshiat.

I have a ten-year-old boy in fifth grade. If we got a warning letter in January (don't make gun fingers) and he did what is described in the article (hold gun-like fingers against another student's head) , we'd do the following:

1) His mother and I would dutifully attend the principal's meeting,
2) There, we'd be attentive, polite, nod and listen but ask no questions,
3) Once back home, we'd pack for a three-day ski holiday and enjoy life.

Bottom line:  He should've followed the rules.  Now he understands that his actions have consequences, especially that he has a ton of makeup work on his plate.  And we'd get more snowboarding time on the slopes.  Win-win.

Life's too short. Learn the lesson, move on.

Baz744: The question isn't what relationship fingers have with guns, nor what relationship swingsets have with time travel. The question is what relationship the behavior of pretending your fingers are a gun has with guns, or what relationship pretending your swingset is a time machine has with time travel.

The answer to all of those is "none".

No doubt the boy learned the lesson, just not the one they were trying to teach.

They hoped to teach that anything about guns or play-acting violence is bad.  They taught the lesson that adults are irrational idiots but you had better go along to get along and stop rocking the boat, even if the rules are nonsensical.  What good little subjects they are indoctrinating.

2014-03-04 07:48:54 PM

Gyrfalcon: Did that behavior bear any relationship to guns?

Yes.

relation: an aspect or quality (as resemblance) that connects two or more things or parts as being or belonging or working together or as being of the same kind

aspect: appearance to the eye or mind

Pretending toy plastic horses are guns resembles in the mind's eye guns; in their appearance to the mind's eye, they are of the same kind. They are therefore related to each other.

He was a kid being a kid and going bang.

The only issue I've argued in this subthread is whether or not the boy's behavior was "gun related" as the words are used in ordinary English. I believe some punishment was called for. I believe this punishment was excessive.

"Gun-related behavior". There was no gun.

So you're saying his behavior bore no relationship whatsoever to guns?

With some refinement (not all adults are idiots, for example) we agree.  On the way up to the ski slopes, we'd discuss this point to make sure he understood that some adults are gonna have an illogical reaction to playful behavior.

All actions involve risk.

LasersHurt: blindpreacher: You can thank the feminization of our school system for this.

We're off to a rapid start for "dumbest thing in the thread."

Well, ok.  I read the referred piece, and a lot of it was spot on except the bit about "feminism" being the culprit and just say "lawyerism" should be a word, but only because neither of "litigation" or "litigious" really fills the bill.

That's really the only fuss here.  Little Billy make a finger-gun and terrorizes little Aziz with it.  Little Aziz then go to his parents, who then hire a lawyer to sue the school for not preventing such heinous behavior.  And they'll win. More accurately, their lawyer will win, and the school, parents and children will lose.  It's not about "zero-tolerance" for bad behavior.  It's about "zero-tolerance" for lawsuits.

blanchae: The only solution is to have a "Point your fingers like a gun day". If everyone did it then what are they going to do?

This. Sometimes, when no amount of reason or logic can get an authority figure to see how ridiculous they're being, the only recourse is to make them continue being ridiculous until they finally get it. Maybe if twenty or thirty kids were lined up outside this idiot's office, awaiting their suspension for brandishing finger-guns, common sense might return. I doubt it, but anybody can dream. I have never in my life seen a better case being made in favor of homeschooling. fark. This. Noise.

I'm not a supporter of zero tolerance policies and feel every incident should be handled on a case-by-case basis.  But, this kid took his finger to the back of another kid's head and pretended to blow his head off.  The other kid was not playing along.  None of you think that's a little bit odd for a 10 year old and needed to be addressed?  Wow

Another thing while I'm here...teachers are the last ones who want to cause a fuss, especially when dealing with parents or punishments.  For every zero tolerance article that enrages you, there are probably 1000 cases that were handled by the teacher and the kid wasn't sent up the creek, so to speak.  Since everyone here LOVES to speculate, I'm going to assume this wasn't the kid's first time at the shoot 'em up rodeo.  I'm willing to bet he in an unruly student and the teacher turned him in as a last resort.

Last thing, if I came up behind you and pointed my finger at your head and said "bang".  What would you do to me?

I don't care how many way and times the kid was warned. Playing finger-mime gun games at worst warrants a talking-to and perhaps a bit of detention. Not this.
