Yay, my 100th green! It's not necessarily by best one... (this one is probably my recent best) but it does herald the upcoming WWIII apocalypse. So it's got that going for it, which is nice.

Scheduled months ago and all nuclear powers were notified ahead of the launch. Still somewhat poignant timing (though coincidental).

I wonder how many critical pieces of various Russian delivery platforms and ordnance have been scrapped for some extra spending money by people with access to them. I'm picturing a Russian jet taking off and the landing gear just stays on the runway as the plan lifts off.

I'm guessing the bolts that hold the landing gear on wouldn't fetch as much as the jet engines.

One of the reasons Ukraine isn't even thinking about putting up a fight is that they've done this with all their military equipment. It's not just aging, it is missing parts that were sold in the black market.

Same as ours, only slightly less of them.

And our subs generally don't sink in port.

Why are we making WWIII out of a minor incursion into Ukraine?

I thought they had more in total numbers and that theirs carry bigger payloads right? Not sure if this is still true... but my understanding is that they made up for their less accurate guidance systems by jamming more nukish stuff in there and by negotiating arms limitation treaties that allowed them a few more nukes than us.

This is the epic facepalm over all this.

If Obama was "decisive" and made swift action in Ukraine, threatened military action to back up the Ukrainians, ect, you'd hear a deafening Category 5 Derpstorm from the RNC/Right-Wing Blogosphere/FOX News about impeachment, about overstepping his power, about needing to get Congressional approval. . .just like happened with Syria.

If he DOESN'T do the above, instead he gets a derpstorm about how he's a pussy who won't be strong and decisive.

It's the usual "damned if you do, damned if you don't" bullshiat from the Reich-wingers, but this time it's farking geopolitics with Russia trying to rebuild the USSR and/or Russian Empire.

Not really. A significant number of Russian Ukranians, if not most of them, don't much care for Russia. (At least according to what my Russian friends from Odessa and their relatives). Although that are is more Ukranian so they may have a different take on it. Still... you can run a dictatorship with significantly lower level of support. If Putin can pry off say... 25-30-40 percent of the Russian population to his side, that is still a threat. Not only a military one, but those are people that he can get to vote to declare Crimea independent or part of Russia in some rigged referendum.

Red Dawn always struck me as being written by two VERY different people.

It's got the RAH-RAH 'MURICA parts, but then there are the parts like the guy with the "FROM MY COLD, DEAD HAND" bumpersticker having a Russian soldier take his gun from his cold dead hand. And the INCREDIBLE downer of an ending.
