The actual article that FoxNews is referencing mentioned that it's going to be a tourist thing:
As of this week, the gardens will be open every morning from Monday to Saturday, with tickets costing 26 euros (£22) per person.
Guided visits in Italian, English and other languages can be booked through the website of the Vatican Museums.

It's still really neat. I'd love to see that.

What makes me giggle is that there are people who look at this and at things he has said and say "AHA! He MUST be a liberal! He's gonna be ordaining women and blessing same-sex marriage in no time, flat!" Even funnier is that such people are all over the conservative/liberal board.

Actually, I had my buddy who has(more or less) grown up Catholic explain that it's because he's a Jesuit, and the Jesuits have always had more of a Communist leaning than the other orders. The way he explained it, people who are paying attention shouldn't be surprised at all, because it's in line with his order, and anybody with a brain should have expected this.

The thing that strikes me most about this guy is that he seems so genuinely happy to be doing this job. I mean, sure, cleaning up the Vatican is a task I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, and I can't imagine *that* is a particularly joyful chore, but as for the rest of the job?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/religion/the-pope/10432303/In-pictur es -Pope-Francis-the-peoples-pontiff.html

Yes, that's a slide show, but just take a flip through a few of those. Every shot where he's interacting with the public, he looks like he's absolutely thrilled to be alive. Either he actually, genuinely, absolutely *delights* in serving his fellow humans, or the man is the best actor in the history of the species. And I still have a hard time getting over his garb, sometimes. I'm sure it's made of fine materials, probably expensive ones, but it's still so *stark*. Not a shred of bling anywhere, and even the cross he wears is (rather dull) silver, not gold. I don't think there's been a pope in any of the history recent enough for reliable records who actually seems to 'get' what the job is actually supposed to be about like this one.

Grew up Catholic, did a crazy amount of youth leadership stuff.  Nowadays there's only one day a year I will absolutely still make it to church, which happens to be tomorrow.  And I've got to go to a conference a decent drive away, so I was Googling places between here and there to make it to Ash Wednesday mass.  My only options that work out as far as time/location goes are semi rural (or formally rural, now full of McMansions) Michigan conservative parishes.  Should be fun.

It isn't that Jesuits are LIBERAL per se, as they aren't in the modern meaning of that word, but the Jesuits are extremely INTELLECTUAL, valuing learning (only order you must have a 4-year undergrad degree BEFORE going to seminary and are expected to achieve a masters or PHd at some point in your life) and logic extremely highly (not used much anymore but "jesuitical" was an adjective that like "talmudic" once was synonym for being extremely, hair-splittingly precise on a question (usually used when it was a question of law or morals).

I think there reputation for being liberal comes from their willingness to challenge or abandon accepted dogma when it cannot be reconciled with reason or scientific advancements (A Jesuit Priest was considered instrumental in formulating the Big Bang Theory for example)

Someone Boobiesed this on Fark, and I can't remember who, but whoever you were, thanks!  I've paraphrased this joke every time someone asks me what a Jesuit is since I first read it.  And to any of my recovering Catholic school friends.

***

A man has three sons who entered three different religious orders: the oldest became a Dominican, the second a Franciscan, and the youngest a Jesuit. On his deathbed, the father tells his sons, "I know you all have vows of poverty, but as a sign of your love for me, I want each of you to place one thousand dollars into my casket to be buried with me."

On the day of the funeral, the Dominican son steps up, places $1000 in the casket, and says, "This
seems like a waste of money, since you can't take it with you, Dad. But with the special permission of my superiors, I'm doing as you requested, as a sign of my love."

Next, the Franciscan son approaches the casket and says, "You know I love you, Dad, but the needs of the poor are so great, I just can't let $1000 be buried with you. I hope you understand, now that you are in heaven. Please forgive me."

Finally, the Jesuit son comes forward and says to his brother, "Don't worry, Frank. I'll pay your share." Then he reaches into the casket, takes the cash left by his eldest brother, and puts in a check for $3000.

This Pope has been perceived by some on both sides of the spectrum as somewhat "liberal" and progressive - maybe even a little bit commie/revolutionary relatively speaking - mostly because he acts like he cares for and respects his fellow human beings (including those in less privileged positions, or not aligned with him), perhaps doesn't view his institution or office as exempt from or superior to the principles it preaches, and in general seems like a rational, thoughtful person who is not a complete dick.

Most "conservatives" will probably never pause to consider what that says about them.

that was outrageous. 56 million to the cemetery trust and the victims will probably get nothing. I was amazed at how much that one diocese was able to collect.

Pope Francis seems to be the first Pope in at least 100 years (not named John Paul II) who has figured out just what his role is: Missionary-In-Chief, NOT Church-Politician-In-Chief (and even JP II fell into to *that* particular hole after a while). I really hope he can avoid getting sucked into internal Church politics long enough to really clean out the pit of vipers that the Church has spawned (or at least thin the population in the pit enough that it can avoid poisoning everything around it). Who knows, he might even be able to resurrect the reputation of the Church enough that people *don't* hear the words "Catholic Church" and automatically think "bunch of homophobic misogynistic pedophiles" someday.
