(Columbus Dispatch)   Apparently, the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources website was also being used as cloud storage for porn videos. No word yet if the resources it contained were natural or synthetic in nature   (dispatch.com ) divider line

FTP site used mainly to allow companies to transfer large files such as maps to ODNR, said Eileen Corson, ODNR spokeswoman.

But no credentials were required to do so, allowing anyone in the public to transfer whatever they wanted.

This is far more common than you might think.  Stupid, yes - but common.

FTFA:   Within the department's division of oil and gas site

Maybe they 'hid' it there because it contained fracking.

15 years ago one of our departments hired their own IT person and was able to convince an EXEC that they should be able to run appart from the regular IT group.   about a week later I was contacted because their new server was out of space and running very slowly.   it, of course, had been hacked and both a Napster server and a Porn website had been set up on it.  I got a cart and hauled it away.   they had the IT person on a 3 year contract, but she did not do anything related to IT after the server was taken away.

I hope that porn was good enough to be worth losing access to the FTP.

I keep a Google drive account of articles for my trainees.  I accessed an article from my wife's phone, and did not formally log off the Google drive app.

She meant to back up her pictures to her Google drive, but they wound up on my work account.  Next to the articles are a whole bunch of absolutely adorable pictures, most of my three-and-a-half year old twins, which are completely uninteresting to anyone else in the world besides us.

Just seems that with various automatic mechanisms for backup, it's surprising we don't see more stuff like this.

/Why yes, I did download TeX for Windows 2.0 from the Washington U. public ftp site, why do you ask?
//How hard is it to set up user names and passwords for an ftp site??????

"Someone was using it as cloud storage," she said. "Unfortunately, that happens."

No it doesn't when you properly secure your stuff. I bet this was a case of some directors not wanting to remember a password and screaming until somebody higher up made the IT department in charge of it remove all security. I just hope whoever did it, or was in charge, has all of the emails telling him to do it, if he is still there.

most of the ones I used weren't hacked but simply poor/lazy sysadmins who for some reason let anon logins have write privileges. hell some would even have delete privileges enabled for guest logins.

Nine times out of ten, "hacked" is IT-speak for "something happened that no one wants to take responsibility for." It's also interchangeable with " you must have a virus..."

In other news, people are still using public FTP servers as "retro" cloud storage.

This was an issue at MIT like 20-25 years ago. You had these idealistic "information wants to be free" CS professors insisting that all their servers should be open, and network admins who didn't want to deal with the mess that resulted. Now they won't allow world write permission on IT-provided shared space. You'll get a nastygram saying turn down permissions or they will. A year or so ago they finally firewalled the campus network except for machines that are specifically designated as reachable from the rest of the world.

You have to remove the hyphen. I don't use punctuation when I label my porn videos.

Way back in the days of yore; yea back before "web and internet" were synonymous the NSF (who funded the internet) wouldn't allow porn ftp servers (I remain convinced that Al Gore should be given his credit*, if only for not letting Tipper know about alt.sex.pictures). Since it seemed to be run mostly by terminally nerdy undergraduates, there were always a few such ftp sites, but they were also only known to a few nerds. The catch was that as the other terminally nerdy types found them, sooner or later somebody would post the location on alt.sex.pictures or similar. Que stampede and DDOS of every porn hungry nerd on the internet. At this point the higherups are certain to notice what happen and quickly shut down the server before the NSF comes knocking (and of course, to slow down the DDOS).

It was an interesting self policing system. As long as they cleaned up all the obvious ftp sites (I'm told that the big archives like SIMTEL had them before I heard about SIMTEL), the rest would be driven off the net by the horde of noobs.

/old
//still terminally nerdy
* I've heard the whole quote, and it sounds like Al was claiming to have sold the net to insiders. Nothing like "I invented the internet".

Yeah, it happens because you didn't pay for actual IT personnel, you vapid twat.

CSB:
Back in the late 90's Virginia Tech would allow students to have FTP access to a few servers, accessible by your PID/email address, viewable by anyone if they knew your email address.  Size limits were generally unenforced.

My friend Brian graduated in 2001 and left hundreds of megs of pictures there.   He died in 2003.  His porn is still there on VT's ftp servers.

Whatever the reason, it appears that a video file entitled "Sexy Babe" containing pornography ended up on the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website.

Sounds like a 90's softcore video.
Pass.

Was this person former military?  Sounds alot like an IT person an old job of mine once hired - she was too damn lazy to go the 5 steps to the server room, so she installed GoToMyPC on the server so she could do stuff from her desk.
