Not sure why Mugabe would be targeting Reynolds, but he's (Mugabe is) no stranger to political violence.

"Secret Zimbabwean Death Squad" would be a cool band name.

Almost forgot...

'Zimbabwe Death Squad' is the cool band / song name for today.

Hmmm, let me guess, is it child porn, Mel?

I don't know the details of this case, but we're kidding ourselves if we think that Mugabe doesn't have death squads.

Pornography charges? What about that psychic girl and her brother that he's been hiding from the Alliance? Is that forgotten?

I don't see why he should be so scared. I think Mel could take them on! I mean, look at him, he's pretty badass!

I guessed the political party of Mel Reynolds wrong. Oh, well. If true then the Zimbabwean death squad isn't so secret, then.

Love to know why Pres. Clinton gave him a pardon. Seems like a rather sleazy fellow. Bank fraud and child porno. Nice.

He wasn't pardoned, he was granted clemency. He served most of his time in federal prison, Clinton commuted the rest to him living in a halfway house.

Sorry doc, but as Chris Stevens found out, US citizens stupid enough to be attacked in foreign countries are on their own.

I also thought that was strange. The AP is generally pretty good at attaching a (D) or (R) to the name. You could say since he wasn't a representative anymore it wasn't relevant what party he was affiliated with, but if you're going to blatantly say he was a U.S. rep in the article itself then I'd consider it obvious information to be givne out.

But he was a Democrat, even if the article didn't say so.

Not a very good secret death squad if he knows about them.

If they're going to shill the article as "Former US Congressman" instead of by the man's name alone (since he's a private citizen), then I think it matters since they're obviously using his former political career to advertise the article itself.

I guess you were just supposed to know he's a Democrat because he's from Chicago.  If this guy had been a Republican it would have been mentioned every other sentence.

He's from Chicago, so I guess he knows a secret death squad when he sees a secret death squad.

Well news articles shouldn't take into account what people know or don't know already about that sorta thing. That's why they're called news articles.

This has been breathlessly reported, here in Chicago.  Per Reynolds, he was on a secret mission to expose Americans secretly doing business with Mugabe.  Mel states, somehow, Mugabe found out, and had Mel thrown in prison on trumped up charges, to stop him.  Mel states that the images on his cellphone would not be considered as pr0n in most countries(?).  Mel says, he needs to rest for a week in SA, and then, come back to the US and expose everybody who is working with Mugabe.  Based on the fact, that in the past, Mel has proven to be so full of shiat that it squirts out of his ears, I not expecting much more, than some further crazy talk.

He's a democrat.  This is an AP article.  That isn't strange at all.  That's what they do.  Now if he were a Republican and they left out the political party, then that would be strange.  Its called political bias in reporting.

And yeah, Fox does it too the other way.  But a) the AP and organizations like them were doing it before Fox even existed, and b) they portray themselves as neutral and too many people still think they are, when it is clear they are not.

Mel was a fun guy. This is from an NBC Chicago piece:

Reynolds, then a second-term congressman from the South Side, was accused of having sex with a 16-year-old he'd met during his 1992 run for Congress. Reynolds had spotted the girl while driving around the district and pulled over to chat, even though he was supposed to be politicking and she was too young to vote. Soon after, she joined his campaign as volunteer and mistress. Two years later, the girl confessed to the affair to her next-door neighbor, who happened to be a Chicago police officer.

The state's attorney set up a phone-sex sting. While sitting in a prosecutor's office, the girl called Reynolds and told him she couldn't make their tryst because she had to babysit.

"What you gonna wear?" Reynolds prompted.

"Well, my peach underwear, like you told me to. I was hoping we could do something really special but I see that's not going to happen, I guess."

"I was definitely gonna f---," Reynolds said.

"Really?"

"Right in my office. I was gonna masturbate too."

At the panting congressman's urging, the girl spun a story of sex with a lesbian lover. When Reynolds asked if the other woman would be willing to do a threesome, the girl said no - but she knew a 15-year-old girl who might. A 15-year-old Catholic schoolgirl.

"Did I win the Lotto?" Reynolds exclaimed.

No, I'm serious. Why would a president give clemency to such a dirtbag? I mean, child molestation? What possible reason could there be for leniency? I truly want the inside dope.

Likewise.  But the statutory rape, porn charges and being "attacked from behind" by fellow inmates *snicker* does remind me of that  other party.  Maybe he's a DINO.

The commutation was not for the child molestation, that time had already been served. The commutation was for unrelated bank fraud.

Schmerd1948: "No, I'm serious. Why would a president give clemency to such a dirtbag?"

Why would a President pardon the rogues gallery of treasonous fark-ups behind Iran-Contra?

1. because it's awfully hard to recruit and retain the various dirtbags who actually run for, hold office and staff those offices, if you don't/can't offer preferential treatment.
2. because it's awfully hard to convince them to engage in shady shiat on behalf of the party, if you have a history of letting them take the fall for their own indiscretions.
3. because it's awfully hard to convince them to *keep quiet* about the shady shiat they did on behalf of the party,if you don't/can't offer preferential treatment.
4. because some of these dirtbags bring their own lobbyists. which makes their pardons not so different than any policy position that's for sale to anyone who'll donate to the next election.

From his Wiki article:

Reynolds was sentenced to five years in prison, thus he expected to be released in 1998. However, in April 1997 he was convicted on 15 unrelated counts of bank fraud and lying to SEC investigators. These charges resulted in an additional sentence of 78 months in federal prison. Reynolds served all of his first sentence, and served 42 months in prison for the later charges. At that point, President Bill Clinton commuted the sentence for bank fraud. As a result, Reynolds was released from prison and served the remainder of his sentence in a halfway house.

So he served his time for the sex offenses, and somewhere around half his time for bank fraud. The remainder spent in a halfway house.

All things considered, the guy is a dirtbag, but somewhere around 4 years in a halfway house due to bank fraud isn't something I think is unreasonable. This is the Dept. of Corrections, not the Dept. of Revenge. Although it's hard to tell sometimes.
