"And the one thing I referenced when I say 'self-professed,' how do you know who to discriminate against?" he said. "They about have to tell you. And are they then setting up a case, is this about bringing a grievance or is it actually about a service that they'd like to have?"

'Seriously,' he continued, 'Do you know how tough it is for a bigot out here these days? Used to be you could just look. That that is not a white fella, boys, we got us some discrimination to do right here. Listen, that fella's talking' Spanish, there you go. But these gays, now, who the hell knows whether you got one of them on your hands? I mean ho-lee shiat there's some gotdamn homosexuals in the N-F-L these days. Or so they say. So what am I s'posed to do, ask 'em? The WHOLE POINT is not to have to deal with 'em and now I got to have a gotdamn conversation just to FIND OUT if I should be not servicin' them or, I don't even know. This here shiat is confusing. Why cain't everyone be straight like before. We all like a little sex with men now and again but nobody had to run around "I'm gay! I'm gay!" about it, trying to trick folks into discriminating against the wrong folks. It just ain't right.'

I kinda want to troll the GOP and run for office in Alabama on the platform of separate drinking fountains for gays, creating a Department of Jewish, Gypsy of Homosexual Affairs that they'd all have to register with, force them to wear a pink triangle, etc. to see if I can force my opponents in the GOP primary to move to the left of me.

So what's the difference between Steve King and Stephen King?

One is known to write voluminous amounts of nonsense, at times and in turn horrifying, perverse, revolting, and self-referencing.
The other lives in Maine.

/seriously, this sounds like the plot from Needful Things

rattchett: Every thinking person knows this train of thought is complete and utter bullshiat. A gay person does not choose to be gay. That's hard work. They are being who they are and they are worthy of respect or derision because of who they are as people, not who they love.

Being pants-on-head retarded isn't a choice either, so we should cut Rep. King some slack here.

demaL-demaL-yeH: ". . . how do you know who to discriminate against?" he said.

I think the real question is: "Why do you need to discriminate against anyone?"

I wonder if that's part of a business's start-up plan. "Okay, we're going be fixing cars, so we'll need a garage with tools and maybe one of those car lifting things. We'll prob'ly need an office to write bills and get money and stuff and maybe a place for customers to sit while we change their oil. Anything else? Yes, Roger? Oh right, I forgot . . . who should we plan on discriminating against. We're in Iowa so we'll need to chose carefully."

Well now you're just being silly. Everyone knows the whole point of owning a business is to enforce your personal code of morality.

King has a point. How could a business know you're gay if you don't tell them? I mean, sure, the requested two grooms at the top of the cake might mean your gay, but if you don't say anything, they won't know! When you order flowers for your wedding, it may be standard practice to include both parties' names for the order, but you could just use initials, and they'd never know. We just need to institute a Don't Ask; Don't Tell policy for gay weddings. It worked so well in the military!

I particularly like how he claimed that sexual orientation is "self professed" and can be 'changed at will' and then went on to explain how someone's "self professed" religious beliefs that can be 'changed at will' are enshrined in the "Declaration".

Zeppelininthesky: DrPainMD: Zeppelininthesky: Steve King is a bigot. Plain and simple. If you do not want to extend the same rights given to every other American, you are a bigot. Period.

Unless you want to extend the right to freedom of association to every American. In that case, you're a bigot if you DO want to extend rights to everybody.

Doublethink, how does it work?

Why would gays not get the exact same protections under the law that straight people enjoy?

I don't know. Why wouldn't they? Everybody had the same rights (the right to freedom of association) before the Anti-Civil Rights Act of 1964, yet everybody was whining about equal rights.

Oh, please, like they could do that!  All successful business owners are good Christians. You can tell because if their business is successful, it's because Jesus - the good, anti-gay Jesus - wanted it that way.

In all seriousness, though, the various bills that have come up recently make me wonder if we need this much fuss to defend the supposed religious rights of a few bigoted assholes?  I'm sure the vast majority of business owners don't give a crap about what their customers do in the bedroom. This is not a huge problem.  Well, okay - it's not a real problem at all. But even the jerkoffs having a "problem" have got to be far and few between.
