It's easily taken care of. But I wouldn't put it past Putin to tell her to stop maintaining it. He's all about image, he wants to make sure everyone knows he is banging a local girl.

Some people have claimed that is Putin on the far left, when he still had hair.  It's suspected that the "random Russian family" that met with Reagan (and gave some surprisingly sharp criticism of U.S. foreign policy to Reagan's face) in Red Square were planted by the KGB.  Although Putin was supposedly stationed in East Germany with the KGB at the time.

Gorbachev was barely in control of the mess that was the Reagan era Soviet Union.
I'd say things were a lot worse back then, with all the nuclear weapons and whatnot.

Actually, he did. Putin only thinks he's Joseph Stalin ordering the Red Army on to Berlin. He bears a closer resemblance to Leonid Brezhnev ordering the Red Army on to Kabul.

As I mentioned in another Ukraine thread, even were I a sociopathic and perfectly unrepentant ex-KGB advisor to Putin, I might try talking Vladimir Vladimirovich into quitting while he's ahead in Ukraine (if I hadn't already). This could easily be his Afghanistan.

I doubt the regular Ukrainian army would put up much more of a fight than the Iraqi regulars in 2003---they're hopelessly out-manned and out-gunned. That the guy appointed fleet admiral by Kiev lost his nerve as quickly as he did should tell you something. That said, the leaders of West Ukraine have the backing of the west and could well get covert support for a long time after Yanukovich or another Putin loyalist is restored. Ukraine could take many years to completely re-conquer, if it's possible at all.

Maybe, but something similar happened in the Russian markets during the Georgia crisis.  It all depends on what the West does in response.

Yeah, she already did. She claims to have predicted back in 2008 that Putin would invade Ukraine.

If Putin stops at Crimea and a bit of mainland to secure water and electricity for the peninsula then Putin will be fine.  The incursion alone weakens an already weak Ukrainian government.  Putin probably doesn't need to do too much more with his military to get a new puppet in Kiev.

I think it would be way harder to hold Ukraine than Iraq. Remember, Russia is only about 3 times as big as Ukraine, population-wise.

Their point is that since Obama didn't respond strongly this Russia's invasion of Georgia in 2008, Putin feels empowered to invade Ukraine.  I seem to recall Russia's invasion was in the summer of 2008 while Bush was president.  If there was to be a response, it was Bush's responsibility to respond.  At the time, as a candidate, Obama was right is keeping his nose out of potentially volatile international affairs.  McCain was an ass.  I think he said something along the line of, "We are now all Georgians" or something like that.

Bush was right in letting Putin ass-rape Georgia (didn't Georgia attack a Russian base or something?)  Getting too mixed up in Georgia would have been just as boneheaded as getting too involved with the current Ukraine issues.

It's very important to keep in mind that Bush's actual response to the Georgia situation was to send Condi Rice out to put pressure on Georgia to apologize for the incident as them being too trigger happy when dealing with some rebels. In fact, everyone after the fact agreed that Georgia sort of shot their own foot off in that situation except for Dick Cheney and the McCain campaign which were trying to claim that this was a moment of international unity where we needed to stand up and fight for the Georgians.

The idea that Russia is to Georgia and Ukraine what Germany was to the Sudetenland and Poland is a gross misreading of the events that transpired in 2008.

I think the problem is that with the formir Soviet politicians were a rabble of tired, drunken despots that enjoyed power for far too long, and were eager to drop the pretense of believing in Communism and join the ranks of the 'new government', or simply slink into the Russian Mafia (which was founded after a massive shanking in the Gulags.

Putin, on the other hand, was their attack dog. He was the kind of man the drunken politicians called to get their dirty work done. A man like that is only fit to serve, not to lead.

What are the odds, huh?

That's because Gorbachev is somewhat of a pussy. Putin is normal (compared to Stain).
