How does the massive group diarrhea of "Bridesmaids" do that? What does pie-bonking tell us about society?

"Wah, I don't understand comedy anymore."

What? The witty barbs of Adam Carolla, Dennis Miller, and all the other castaways on Has-Been Island aren't enough any more?

Conservatives entertainers have turned into the biggest bunch of crybabies ever. They're perfectly free to rip on Obama. I saw John Stewart taking shots at Obama the other night, why can't Adam Corrolla?

If any conservative out there is interested in conducting a sober examination of why they don't have much say among the 18-35 demo and tend to be shut out of popular culture in general, this article would be a good starting point.

It's like this guy watched only 45 total minutes of comedy from both eras.

You don't need comedy to get away with criticizing authority these days.  Since the 90s, we just go right for the jugular with Enemy of the State, Training Day, and other action and drama films that directly tackle government corruption at the highest level.  You don't need to hide behind a veneer and worry about McCarthyites ruining you because you question government authority anymore.

And, of course, probably the best political criticism I can think of isn't terribly subversive anyways(Dave).

I simply don't have the time or inclination to refute any of this man's claims.  I'd give him credit for noting how being the underdog and fighting against the evil system is a plot that has worked time and again, but saying there's no toilet humor in the notable comedies of the 70's and 80's makes him sound like a horse's rear end.  And It's just easier on a Monday morning to say he's wrong and move on.

I'd argue that he's hard to make fun of if he's just as willing to not only make the jokes about himself, but have fun with them as well.

Yeah, they have a point, Jon Stewart won't  go after Obama at all.

Seriously, if you're a political comedian, and 90% of your jokes aren't going after the Republican Party, you're a shiatty comedian.  The Democratic Party is annoying, but the GOP is batshiat crazy.

Of course there was no toilet humor in 70s movies.  It was all witty repartee.  Like this classic scene from Blazing Saddles:

As a kid, we'd watch a local station's re-broadcast of Blazing Saddles every Christmas. The TV edit left out the farting scene. But kept in EVERY n-bomb. Priorities and stuff.

To be fair, you have to be pretty good to make actual jokes about the Repubilcan party because the reality of the republican party is far too funny for it to be manufactured by comedians or writers. .

You could make some great humorous statements out of a group whose only move right now is to oppose every single thing someone does without even thinking first, and yet not accomplish anything for themselves.  Of course, some might not like that kind of comedy because it seems far too unrealistic - no one would really act like that, would they?

2014-03-03 11:15:29 AM
Good comedy requires some empathy, and today's Republicans are completely devoid of it. That's why Republican "comedy" sucks.

Or to paraphrase Robin Williams: "Why do you think there isn't so much comedy among conservatives?" "Did you ever think you hate all the funny people?"

2014-03-03 11:16:06 AM
This just in: the comedy you get is largely dictated by what audiences want.

What we could use more of is not political humor that's left or right, but stuff that's critical of our political system - the influence of money, the ways people are stampeded like herds of cattle, etc.

There's some of it out there (Stanhope, for example), and it plays well with young audiences, but comedy clubs are mostly filled with people middle-aged to elderly, and they don't want to hear that stuff.

In fairness he does have a point about SNL but I blame Lorne Michaels for that show's long slide.  The day that guy passes the winning Fark headline will be "SNL just got light-years funnier."

Carolla's a lot of things, but he's pretty farking funny when he wants to be. Unfortunately too much of his podcast is him complaining about traffic tickets (literally every other day) or his flunkies trying too hard to be as funny as he is and failing.

As for making fun of Obama, what's to make fun of? There's literally nothing funny about the guy aside from his cadence and his ears. And neither is particularly funny. Seriously, what else is there? Anyone?

FTFA: Still, Obama is exactly the kind of stuffed-shirt know-it-all - pompous, humorless and in love with himself - that Ramis mercilessly lampooned.

Obama at the 2013 White House Correspondents' Dinner: "I'm not the strapping young Muslim socialist I used to be."

The author of this piece shows either an intentional and/or hilarious lack of knowledge of his subject matter, but he's writing for a group of people even less informed than himself, so it'll probably all work out.

Obama, Desmond Tutu and the Pope walk into a bar. Putin ducks.

But seriously... I don't know. It seems like Obama is the kind of guy who can laugh at himself. He's intentionally jovial without being a goofball. It's hard to make fun of someone like that because they're generally in on the joke. Compare and contrast to Bush who only seemed jovial but you could tell it was fake. He couldn't laugh at himself so when he said stupid things, he was so unaware of himself, it was easy to make fun of him.

I'm by no means an expert and this is only my opinion based on the impression I get.

Exactly. Clinton and Bush were easily painted as a sex maniac and a dumbass. That makes for great comedy fodder. Do people not remember liberals making fun of Clinton every chance they got?

The lead is buried, though. Apparently, conservatives are finally willing to admit Nixon wasn't a saint?!
