I remember we weren't supposed to refer to the invasion of Iraq as an invasion either.

How well did that work out?

What is Obama (or anyone else) supposed to do?

Crimea is a majority ethnic Russian province which is home to one of Russia's big Naval bases - it is their access to the Mediterranean.

Russia is going to protect its interests in that area. Unless the Russians start some large scale invasion of the rest of Ukraine, we should hold our nose and look away.

People who criticize Obama's response don't seem to offer practical alternatives.  Russia has a pretty significant logistical advantage in the area so any military response is doomed.  All Obama and the rest of Europe can do impose some economic sanctions on Russia and bide their time.

Dear Moony times:

No one cares what a chess champion has to say about geopolitical conflict. We're no longer in the business of fighting other people's wars. Go fark yourselves.

Lets go see what the GOP/TEA/Conservative Derp-O-Sphere has to herp about this.

I can't see no downside with having american troops less than 50 miles from the russian border. None. At. All

Kasparov is not a darling of Hollywood,  and doesn't appear to have friends in Washington,  so I doubt his comments will amount  to anything.

Yeah, gotta go this route as well.  Right wingers claiming that Obama isn't acting hard enough, please list the exact response you think he should give.

Keep in mind, we'll hold you to that if he actually does it and you try to change your stories like you did with Libya and Syria.

Obama has no response, so chess man should just chill.

"And indeed, the United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine,"

It's his red line all over again. Not ours, the "international community's." You're cool, Putin.

The problem with that editorial is the US doesn't have much of a stake in Ukraine much less the Crimea.

Three different openings in one game?  ??

A Russian takeover of the Crimea would, however, severely restrict the Ukrainians' access to the Black Sea, and, by extension, to the Mediterranean.  And the Ukrainians will probably try to protect their interests in that area....

Since illegally invading Iraq under George W Bush, where does the USA think it has any moral high ground regarding this issue?

davynelson: Since illegally invading Iraq under George W Bush, where does the USA think it has any moral high ground regarding this issue?

Fortunately, almost everybody around the world sees the difference between this administration and that one. Obama has far greater credibility internationally than Bush did.

If giving advice, it would seem to make more sense to start with the Sicilian defense at the opening: Never start a land war in Asia.

When did the Slav ethnicity start getting called "ethnic Russian"?  That doesn't seem to clarify things, it muddies them quite a bit.  Slavic peoples have a well-known history and heritage, they have some common ethnic traits, and more importantly, there has been a long tradition of investigating pan-Slavism as a political (and importantly militaristic) goal in the region (following the groundbreaking work of Hannah Arendt).

Russia is a political region with an amalgamation of different ethnicities.  Certainly political power lies with the Slavs, but much of the internal conflict is ethnic conflict there, and being clear about the self-identification that people bring is excruciatingly important to understanding things like the Crimean conflict.

Palmer Eldritch: I came in the thread looking for criticism of the use of chess terminology. Good job, everyone.

Somehow I suspect that Subby was well aware of the terminology.  Some non-chess players might recognize that the Queen's Gambit is a chess term, but I really doubt that non-chess player would even remotely have heard of the Roy Lopez or the Sicilian Defense.  Those terms have not exactly entered the public lexicon.
