Moral of the story: never piss off a writer.

If anybody is unsure about clicking the link: Imagine an absolutely epic Fark thread GIF war except it's entirely one blog post. Epic.

Some blogger that splices a lot of distracting gifs into her impossible to care about dialog?  NOPE.  She some how managed to take the Buzzfeed formula and lower the bar.  Cred for that, at least.

She's a rather prolific SF/F writer with very respectable sales. Wikipedia link

What "writer?" All I saw was another asshat using a personal forum to post a hell of a lot of pictures, because apparently she didn't like the fact that she lost an argument in a public forum.

"Epic"? Really? "Masturbatory" is probably a better word. It's a "writer" who, unable to apparently use, y'know, words, to communicate her displeasure with a group, instead interspersed a bunch of animated GIFs into a post. Not only does it detract from her apparently less-than-valid point, but it also detracts from her claims as a "writer."

Or imagine a blog post written by a 13 year old which types 2 sentences then a gif.

Every 2 sentences. And it's about 10,000 words long.

Can someone condense that shiat for me? I have no idea what the original hissy fit was about, and the link was giving me boils, it was so obnoxious.

Uh, going over her list of published stuff, it's 1/2 or more short stories. Of the non short stories, half again is some version of historical, or romance, novel. Of the remaining, which I'd call firmly in the grasp of SF/F, I've never even farking heard of her, let alone read anything she did.

And I read on average 2-6 books a month, exclusively SF/F, so I think it's an over-statement to call her (or imply) she's some hefty mover and shaker in the SF/F world.

Sounds like SFWA is turning into the same sort of aggressively progressive nutcases who insist on the new con code of conduct (about which we had a thread last month).

I wonder if John "Gor" Norman is a SFWA member.

Totally off topic:
The thread "Webcomic artist has public meltdown following a successful kickstarter campaign, decries materialism, capitalism and proceeds to steal people's money. Then things get set on fire  " has been moved to Total Fark.  Is this common? First time I've noticed something like this.

Same with the other one right after it that was titled "Sci-fi awards, the Hugos, get the UK's biggest TV presenter to host the show for free. Everyone biatches about him on Twitter as not being one of them (despite him being a serial published sci-fi author). So he pulls out "

I'm guessing Bleeding Cool's check bounced.

The point is she's talking down to the people she doesn't like by writing it like a Buzzfeed link which is all those kids can understand nowadays.

The overall fight is: Some people noticed that SF/F is dominated by white guys and want to encourage more female and minority participation. Some old guard SF/F people think that's bad because it's Political Correctness.

This most recent skirmish is about some old SF guys saying some nasty stuff about women on a listserv that they forgot was public. People criticized them for it. This writer defended them, got criticized herself, and is now complaining about that.

Following the links, it seems an edition of the SFWA newsletter had (1) old fashioned cover art with a barely dressed female warrior, (2) comments inside that a particular (former?) female SF professional had been admired for her looks. SFWA replied by advertising for a new editor who would submit all content to their board of censors to make sure it was politically correct before publishing it.

Too many people refuse to associate with those who don't share their political leanings.

SF used to be a lot more "can't we all get along?"

45 years ago SF writers disagreed on the Vietnam war. Instead of ripping apart their social fabric they took out opposing ads in Astounding, one signed by authors who supported the war and one signed by authors who opposed the war.

I slightly mangled the dueling ads story. See http://www.depauw.edu/sfs/pioneers/franklin52.htm:

SF fans who tried escaping from the Vietnam War by diving into the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction or Galaxy Science Fiction in the spring of 1968 instead found themselves plunged right back into the conflict- in the form of two opposing advertisements about the war, each signed by scores of SF writers, artists, and editors. The June 1968 issue of Galaxy showcased the two ads on facing pages, followed by pages of anguish by editor Frederik Pohl, who chastised both groups for turning what he called "a choice of tactics'' into a "polarized debate,'' thus making "opponents of people who should be friends'' and threatening to "endlessly'' protract the national debate, and hence the war.

Yes, but this is about something much more important than an actual war. This is about sexist illustrations of cleavage in a genre with a significant adolescent male fan base. Or something like that.

Anyway, instant Sarah Hoyt fan here.

If by "nasty stuff about women" you mean (gasp!) referring to female editors as female editors or commenting that one editor was so attractive, several wives of writers were jealous, then yes, such utterly offensive comments can not be tolerated in a free and open society. Banish them! Burn them!

Nope, I mean stuff like calling out Mary Robinette Kowal as a hypocrite for being a feminist and also daring to wear dresses. For which that guy has already thoroughly apologized.

But I forgot that calling someone an asshole when they act like an asshole is trampling on all of their rights. When you want to dish it out but can't take it just call anyone who pushes back a PC Nazi.

Yeah. No.

Burning alive two older giants of 70s SF because they referred in a reminiscence of 70's SF writing to an editor as a "lady" and spoke of her beauty is not accurately or sufficiently described as "want[ing] to encourage more female and minority participation." But that description does represent the sort of NewSpeak justifications we have come to expect from the Social Justice movement.

So, basically, we have both sides looking for something to be raging douchebags about to other people, is what I'm seeing, and that justification happened, and then promptly both sides flew off the farking handle to white knight...something...while getting to demonize the opposition.

It's farking Fox News, for authors, if I'm reading this all correctly?

I thought you were supposed to submit a short story to Tales to Astonish comics with a thinly veiled allegory about the guy you hate.

Two 70+ year old authors, in one of their regular columns about the history of SF, reminisce about the SF environment in the 70s and mention an old friend and editor of theirs, mentioning she is a lady, and a knockout.

This appears in an issue of their zine that has a typical Science Fiction and Fantasy cover of a scantily clad woman on it. The Social Justice league goes wild about the sexism and demands the ouster of the columnists and the editor.
