They are really good, no doubt about it, but they're in the Missouri Valley Conference. But their RPI is #9. Still, a very rare and cool thing to accomplish. Last team that did it was UNLV in '91, and that seems like forever ago.

I don't know, they were a final four team last year. They lost to the eventual champions.

As an ex-Kansan from the central part of the state, I feel oddly proud and excited.  I will definitely cheer them to make the final (not just the final four).

WSU doesn't even have a football program.  I don't think they are overly concerned about the profits from their athletic programs.

I've opted to go look at what their majors are. The roster page is here. Not giving half a damn about the names attached to the majors (but I went alphabetically through the roster if you care), we have:

Business Finance
Undecided
Undecided
Sociology
Ethnic Studies
Communications
Sport Management
Undecided
"Undecided on major, but came to Wichita State interested in the Entrepreneurship program"
Sociology
Undecided
Pre-Med (the only freshman to have declared a major)
Sociology
Management
Communications

Make of that what you will

It's much, much, much more expensive to field a football team than a basketball team.  Outside of the BCS conferences the vast majority of football programs lose money.

That being said, the Missouri Valley Conference, where WSU plays basketball, fields an affiliated FCS football conference which has been very strong in recent years, and includes the three time defending champions North Dakota State.  WSU might be one of the rare schools that could make money playing FCS football, or it could be an expensive boondoggle that would leech funds from the successful basketball program.

The big point is there are schools that make plenty of money in athletics without sponsoring football.  Men's Basketball is the second most profitable sport behind big time football, and with a much lower cost of entry, is far easier for smaller schools to be competitive in and make money off of.

You know what? I've got nothing better to do tonight. Let's just go through some other rosters for funsies and see what kind of major spreads we find. If you wish to join in, check the college's official website. Likely, the major is buried at the very tail end of the player bio.

I shall begin with my 'local' squad, Wisconsin, and this is the kind of spread you want to be seeing, really, though you do see a cluster in life science communications like you saw at Wichita St. in sociology:

Life Sciences Communications
Personal Finance
Undecided
n/a, but given that the n/a is of a freshman, let's assume undecided
Kinesiology
Life Science Communications
International Studies
Undecided (sophomore)
Business Marketing
Community and Nonprofit Leadership
n/a; another freshman, so assume undecided
Community and Environmental Sociology, with a certificate in Criminal Justice
Undecided (sophomore)
"completed his master's degree in life sciences communications in the summer of 2013 and is currently enrolled in the UW MBA program"
n/a; another freshman, so assume undecided
Life Science Communications

Good for the Shockers.

Tired of this RPI crap - they're undefeated and deserve a #1 seed.

Butler, VCU, George Washington, Wichita St. themselves.

I'd love less of the eighth place PAC-12 team and more of the smaller schools.

Gosling, dude (or babe), thanks for the stuff but it's Saturday night.

I know your pissed but get on out there and live life.

I'm 50, married with two girls and I love my life but I wish I was you, with youth and unlimited potential.

Forget this nonsense, get out there my son (or daughter) and grab life by the balls and don't let go.

This kind of is me doing... that. My designs are on journalism, writing, research is my wheelhouse. I do this shiat for fun, as a hobby. I'm setting up for a Kickstarter right now for a book revolving around primers on as many club soccer teams as I could get hold of. (Note: the count eventually topped 1,100.)

Besides, when you don't drink, this town pretty much is dead to you. It's a whole lot of dive bars around here and the one really good bookstore in town closed a couple years back.

Well then give me a link and I will do what I can, brother.

When I was in high school I actually wrote down the batting averages of every player that ever played in the National League in a Composition Notebook.

I still have it and cherish it.

Well, again, I'm still setting up. I'm right now lining up an artist to do my cover and some illustrations in the book. I need a quote from him yet, then I need to line up an editor who will make sure the book has all the technicals like margin and bleed and everything up to publisher specifications, and then I have to make sure I have my bases covered as far as taxes go, and then there's the matter of that goddamned video I'm going to have to make. (I happen to be rather camera-shy. And by 'rather' I mean when I made an application video for a reality show once, it took me an hour and a half to get from 'everything set up and just need to hit record' to 'actually hit record' because it took me that long to psyche up and then it took me 40 minutes and four takes to spit out some babbling piece of garbage I was immediately ashamed to look at but at least it was done.)

THEN I'll be ready to start the clock. I'm pretty sure I'll be letting at bare minimum the next soccer thread to come along know when that happens.

UNLV is the only team to start any season undefeated with 30 wins in 1990-1. St Joe's was undefeated at 24-0 prior to the tourney, but lost in the NCAA's before reaching the 30 win mark. These days there are more tournaments and more opportunities to play games. to get beyond 30.

Shockers should be ranked #1. Screw the Gators.

Good record, crap conference, not a top 5 RPI. As it sits they're a #1 seed anyway and they should be.

But, hypothetically, what happens if they fail to win their conference tourney? Do they keep their number 1 seed? Does it matter if the loss happens I the opening round or the finals?

Here's Rice's team, with player names and majors.  Keep in mind that, unless things have changed recently, you're not allowed to declare your major there until sometime in your Sophomore year, but you pick one of the three Distribution Groups (humanities, social sciences, science/engineering) for your academic advising.  There are only four players on the entire team who are juniors or seniors.  I'd be willing to bet that most of the undeclared (social science) players will be joining the football team in studying economics, which is infamous for being the jock major at Rice.
