(Orlando Sentinel)   Police arrested a twenty-one year-old man who stole a tip jar full of cash for Girl Scouts who were going to use the money to buy cookies for soldiers deployed overseas. You just know he's going to get slapped with a harsh jail sentence   (orlandosentinel.com) divider line 54

Don't try to randomly send stuff to soldiers deployed overseas. It piles up at headquarters, rarely reaches the Joes and Marines it's aimed at, and clogs the mail, slowing packages from people who ACTUALLY KNOW them and are sending them things they want.

If you know somebody deployed, send them stuff. If you don't, give money to a support organization.

Girl Scouts USA has made arrangements with the military in advance, so they're not just randomly sending packages of cookies overseas. My sister told me that last year, GS of Western Washington sent 117,000 cookies through Operation Cookie Drop to military personnel overseas. It's a huge endeavor that involves shipping pallets and pallets of boxes.

To add to this, when I was there in early 2003 we got two huge boxes filled with an assortment of girl scout cookies from our local troop.   I don't remember the exact date but it was fairly early in my deployment so likely April/May.   I do remember them being a much welcomed break from MRE's and T-Rations.  They seemed to be pretty well organized back then since we got the cookies shortly after the mail got up and running. We seemed to get a shipment every other month so logistically they must have been doing something right.  Makes me regret all the more that my parents never let me join the girl scouts.  I make sure to support them each chance I get since they really do seem to do a lot of good work (plus delicious cookies).

"The curly-haired Girl Scouts, when shown the video of the police chase and capture, were ecstatic. The TV reporter asked them to summarize the lessons learned.
'No more stealing our cookie money,' said one.
'Don't mess with Girl Scouts and don't mess with soldiers,' said the other."

Anybody else just get a chill, and mentally review your life to see if you've ever slighted a Girl Scout?

Waiting to board the rotator, with all of our A3 bags lined up on the ramp for customs inspection.  Raided the ladies room, and loaded up one of the PITA troops bags full of 'hygiene products'.  Stand back and watch hilarity ensue.......

For some reason, I don't think the Girl Scouts of Western Washington sent 117,000 boxes of cookies through the post office. I'm pretty sure the cookies are sent to a central processing facility in the US and that the military sends the cookies themselves. Just think of the logistics involved in shipping 5,000,000 boxes.

Label it "US Dollars" and it will be there almost before you can put the crates on the ramp.
