Olo Manolo: Things in this thread that don't surprise me:

The number of people that see no reason for "stand your ground" type laws, because nobody has ever been a victim of violence and needed to defend themselves. (And had that been the case, the police would have been just around the corner with teddy bears to defuse the situation.)

The number of idiots that think everybody who owns a firearm is a bloodthirsty loon, with no life outside of hunting down innocent people.

Things in this thread that do surprise me:

The number of Farkers that apparently have an amazing ability to make snap calls about people's intentions and mental status when they were just scared awake at 4am, based on a shadow that attempted to make entry into their residence then approached when told to stop. (You should all be making a lot more money than you do. Law enforcement agencies and psychological facilities would pay lots of money for that magical ability)

Yeah, the guy is a pussy and he made a poor decision that cost somebody their life. But everybody that is trying to frame this situation as "He clearly saw that it was an innocent old Alzheimer's patient kindly begging for a blanket, and shot him just for the fun of it because gun owners are like that" is misrepresenting what happened to make it fit their own narrative about "those crazy farking gun-nuts".

I don't know about you...but...if an old person with a dog in tow was pounding on my door at 4am, I do not immediately assume home intrusion, I assume confused/sick and at the wrong home.  You know what the appropriate action here is?  I'll tell you what it's not - It's not letting several minutes pass by without calling the cops, then deciding to step outside with your gun to confront the alleged "home intruder."

This guy made a really bad decision that resulted in an unnecessary death.

There is nothing wimpy or shameful about calling the cops first, then grabbing your gun and finding a safe place to stay while the cops arrive.  That gun is for when the intruder enters the home, not for when "he's on mah propertah!!!"

This could have been prevented if the deputy who stopped and questioned Mr.Westbrook at 2:30 AM would have bothered to notice that Mr.Westbrook had Alzheimer's  .
