"When are going to get a gay/lesbian AAA hero(ine) who isn't a one-off joke?"

When you stop pretending you know fark-all about video games.

While the protagonist was not Gay Tony, the title did feature Gay pretty prominently. It did fantastic on reviews and even won DLC of the Year on the Spike VG awards.

The Mass Effect series let you play as a gay man or woman if I remember correctly.  And outside of GTA, I don't know a game series much bigger.

Dragon Age let you play a gay protagonist. As did Mass Effect. Already been done.

Those little white pellets in Pac Man were blobs of semen.

Therefore, Pac Man was gay.

ME3 actually did a fantastic job of handling the pilot Cortez and his deceased husband.

Too bad they can't handle females or black characters.

Yep. But in both cases gay was simply an option. When will there be a protagonist who is strictly gay in a non-rpg?

Now that I think about it, they have been pretty mum on the romance options in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Maybe they are all gay this time.

I find most FPS these days to be pretty gay.

I doubt if Gone Home counts, but Sam was effectively the most important character in the game.

I just kind of assumed all the protagonists in the CoD series were gay, but maybe that's just because the people who play it are.

Yes, which means the protagonist (the Dragonborne) is gay if you choose them to be.

The left paddle in Pong was openly gay.... he just never hit you over the head with it.

In all of the kinds of games I can think of where it would make sense (wRPG's and such), it's usually a selling point for the player to have lots of choices.  Forcing a PC to be gay would limit a player's choices at least as much as forcing a PC to be straight, so I don't think it would make for a very good selling point.  Allowing a player to choose to go either way makes a lot more sense.

For NPC's, the same rules don't apply, and I do seem to remember at least one indie game off the top of my head where part of the plot hinged on the fact that a particularly snarky NPC was gay and was forced as a child to attend a religious school.

In DA2, one of your companions just hits on you out of the blue and you have two options to flirt back and one that will piss him off. And you get all panicky trying to let him down gently without ruining your influence with him.

Later he blows up the farking Chantry. fark you, Anders!

man, both the article and this thread are full of uneducated shiatbags.

Perhaps video game players simply don't sensationalize the gender preferences of their video game characters.  I want someone who blasts aliens with a laser, i don't give two shiats if they have a penis or not, if they're interested in penis or not, or anything else of the variety.  Most gamers I know are the same way.  Unless the game is designed to be sexually explicit, we don't want to or need to know.

Look at the bad press SWTOR got about this issue.  At first, you could not have romance options with the same gender.  They got slammed.  Then they added it, and they got slammed.  Better to avoid the whole topic, IMO.

If you care whether your video game protagonist is into the ladies, and the video game isn't deliberately about their sexuality, then fark you.  you are a farking part of the farking problem, and you farking deserve to be farking shot in the farking genitals while farking strangers on the farking internet laugh at how small your penis or how large your vagina is depending which you currently have.

Since the canonical romance in Mass Effect is Liara, and the FemShep option is preferred by players, then ME3 most definitely pulled this off. Of course, Liara is monogendered, so it isn't quite gay and hot lesbian action is not really looked down upon.

On the other hand, a LOT of the fighting game/FPSes seem to take bromance a little too far (or not far enough), so we can assume closeted male protagonists in, say, Call of Duty.

Guild wars 2 has two lesbian relationships between major story characters.  Both were rather well done.

Several bioware games had gay character options/romances.  Dragonage, Mass effect, etc.

Jericho had a lesbian as one of the player controlled characters, iirc.

Gone home goes without question.

Etc and so forth.  Now having one as your only main character, with a canon gay relationship?  I don't see any issues about that, save for wondering if it would even be relevant to the plot.  You'll likely see two girls as lovers before you see two guys though.

DA2 is the reason I don't pre-order Bioware anymore.

As a standalone game it would've been okay. Attaching the name Dragon Age to it made it terrible. What a shoddy rush job.

Because sexuality doesn't matter in so, so many of those games?  Only a handful of games in my Steam library have the main character confirmed heterosexual through things like being married, having opposite-sex-only romance options, having a backstory with past relationships, or whatever.  And one of those is the Batman series, and Bruce Wayne has been around way longer than PCs.  Although his name IS Bruce, he should be at least questioning.

The number of games with the option to play as a homosexual character is almost as high.

The rest of them, it doesn't say one way or the other, project what you like and go shoot some people.

Honest to God I thought Tommy and Lance were lovers in GTA Vice City and the reason Lance turned on Tommy was because they broke up.

In many games the sexual orientation doesn't even come up.

Well that goes right along with the fratbro mentality. " I got you farker, I totally put my balls on your face you homo"

outside of RPG's, the characters sexual orientation largely would never come up. for all i know, the PC in BLOPs spent all of his down time sexing up the dudes.

Baldur's Gate.  Mass Effect Series.  Dragon Age.  Skyrim.

All let you play as a gay character.  Or straight.  The thing that makes those games what they are is choice.

Come up with some non-gimmick gay protagonist in a good game and I'll play it.  But with that said, I can't think of a game I've played where the character being straight had some vital impact on the gameplay or plot, so I'm not sure what the farking point is here.  Making the protagonist gay for the sake of making a gay protagonist seems more insulting than anything.
