Cubit = length from elbow to tip of middle finger.  Obviously YMMV, so it's an archaic, inexact measurement but it does allow the carpenter to flip the bird at whoever is giving such ludicrous instructions.

Oh pish. Be glad it's rain. Since an inch of rain equals 10 inches of snow, give or take, that shiat would be horrifying in half the country right now, and we're supposed to get pounded again Sunday (give or take).

Cry me a river.

On second thought, don't do that.

Thirst, crop failures, dying stock, shortages, wildfires, OYG it's the End of the World!

Add three inches of rain.

Floods, mudslides, crops washed away, drownings, OYG it's the End of the World!

Instead of getting hysterical about every change in the weather we could design and implement some basic water management. I am insane, yes. That's why I don't live in SoCal.

I wish the weather pattern could shift. One inch of rain generally converts to about 10 inches of snow. That would really shut them up.

We're not even close to that point.  The reservoirs across the state are so far below their normal levels that this latest storm is only bringing about 1% of the rain we actually need.

//not complaining about the rain

2014-02-28 09:32:33 AM
The only people complaining are those living on the sides and at the bottoms of hillside burn areas and those living in areas with ancient infrastructure that's insufficient to drain the streets and such. The vast majority of us are more than okay with the rain we're getting.  However, "Something is happening and most folks are not complaining about it." Makes for boring news.

It's not your problem. You have your own 2nd tier weather emergencies to deal with.
When Back East really needs help, California sends it, and vice versa.
This stuff that happens every year messes up a few unfortunates lives, but the basic infrastructure to deal with their difficulties remains intact and fully functional, and to me , that's a second tier emergency.

They are starting to use old quarries to catch rainwater and allow it to soak into the aquifers.
Meanwhile, here in Texas, we're in year 7 of our epic drought. And it's not over.

The KJV from 1611 or so uses "shiattim wood" at that point of the text. Much giggles in Sunday School when the elderly church lady read that.

I shiattim you not.

And...my first filterpwn.

A cubit is about a cubit on a short person, on a tall person its closer to elbow to wrist than elbow to fingertips.

The "original" Hebrew (Gen 6:14) has the Ark made from "atzei gofer" ("gofer wood"), the word not having a known translation. Some translated it to shiattim wood (acacia; a word which is used, minus the filter-added 'a', all over the Bible), and some left it as-is. Why they'd have picked a different word entirely is a mystery to me (and indicative of why translations probably shouldn't be considered "canonical").

Wiki tells me the Hebrew is unrelated to the modern English word "gopher".

20 years?!?! BS. No one makes it past a week without at least getting mugged. After 20 years you should have been killed about 3 times.

Bah, what do they know!  The Bible says that Noah took two of each animal on the Ark.  When it was their turn to come aboard, Noah didn't know what to call them, so he gave them a name, "gopher".  God saw that it was good and he called them that, too.  And they were all talking Hebrew.  That's what my preacher man says, and that's good enough for me.

Old_Fark: Thirst, crop failures, dying stock, shortages, wildfires, OYG it's the End of the World!

Add three inches of rain.

Floods, mudslides, crops washed away, drownings, OYG it's the End of the World!

Instead of getting hysterical about every change in the weather we could design and implement some basic water management. I am insane, yes. That's why I don't live in SoCal.

Actually we have a fairly advanced flood control system in the basin, which is basically a giant flood plain.  The problem is that people want to live on hills and mountainsides and those don't hold up too well when the yearly brush fires burn away all the vegetation holding the slopes together.  We have mudcatches, but they only hold so much volume, and they have to get dug out after every rain event.  The solution is to not build your home on a goddamn hillside.

Most people here in California don't spaz about the weather.  Folks who just roll with it aren't exactly going to make the news.

The nice thing about a storm like this is that I can still wear a short sleeve shirt outside as long as I have a wind breaker handy.

There's a reason we import much our water just like there's a reason we provide so much produce and foreign imports for the balance of the country.

There's plenty to worry about in life, Californians just don'tt have to worry all that much about weather most of the time.

"You know what the easiest job in the world is? Being a weatherman in San Diego. You're on air for 5 seconds every day and you say the same thing:
'So, what's the weather going to be like today, Lew?'
'Nice. Back to you.'"

// would it even be possible or worth it to dig reservoirs to catch these freak storms, or would they be dry the following week anyway?

They are starting to use old quarries to catch rainwater and allow it to soak into the aquifers.
Meanwhile, here in Texas, we're in year 7 of our epic drought. And it's not over.

One day?

Weather people down here don't have much to do. We generally cut them some slack when they lose their minds the couple days a year we actually have weather.

2014-02-28 12:58:07 PM
The rain isn't the problem, and most people here realize that. As was pointed out earlier, flash flodding is the issue due to the dry land not soaking up water fast enough so 3 inches of rain can result in massive instant flooding.

The other big headache is traffic. People who live here that aren't used to driving in the rain combined with people that moved here from wetter places thinking that they can drive like back home after a fresh rain. The roads here get a ton of oils and dirt that is rarely washed away so when it does rain things are a lot slicker at the start than they would be in a place that has more regular rainfall.

All in all though, the biggest whining wankers are the newscasters. Most natives even joke about "StormWatch XXXX!", since the news tends to make crap stories like that with a 1/8 inch of rain and 20 mph gusts.

zimbomba63: Yeah, I live in the Chicago area and I love being lectured on winter weather from some mope in Redlands, CA.

So, Californians are clueless about weather, as evidenced by their choosing to live in an area where it's sunny 350 days a year?  Personally, I was happy to move away from an area where people yelled racial slurs as I bicycled through their neighborhoods.

However, I admire your fortitude; Chicago is a great place to be.  From.

Glad you found the peace you were looking for, and good luck on finding some water to drink in a couple years.  All of us hateful and spiteful people will drink with great intolerance from Lake Michigan, while gazing longingly, if bigotedly, at your earthly paradise.

Did they specify quantity?

All I have to say is...

Fark destroyed Atlanta for snow that they were ill-equiped to deal with. Granted it's no excuse for the emergency infrastructure to not be in place, but...

LA had to deal with a, wait for it...whopping 1.7" of farking rain?

WUT???!!??

I deal with at least that on a typical summer afternoon on my way home from work in South Florida. In a Mustang with road course suspension and a cold-air intake in the fender none the less. That's like taking a farking bass boat into 6-8' seas. Yet, unless I have to scramble for tree cover because of hail, I have no problem.

California, you too damn dry.
