/nor did I see it afterward...

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot:  If the power grid was that sensitive that something like a hand-held firework could shut it down like that, you've got a really farked up system.

I don't think that was a firework, I think that was something grounding out a high tension line.
I think the BANG was a transformer popping.

Fat redneck with an improvised firework causes citywide blackout? Shocking.

Where I work at least once a year we lose power for a few hours because a frog or squirrel stepped in the right place on a transformer.  I'm guessing if there was something conductive in that firecracker  and he won the unlucky lottery.

Last time I went to look and  the electrician showed me the smoking bit of frog on the ground.

Yeah, the firework... The transformer blew for some reason from the firework, most likely. I don't think anyone here is going to argue with you that the firework would cause the buzz/pop, the blue flash, and lights to stop working, but what they would point to is the fact that the guy launched the firework immediately preceding the outage, so it seems like his firework caused the issue that blew the transformer, which caused the power to go out, which lived in the house that jack built...

A bunch of barely dressed women in a truck...In Brazil.

Subby, I think the lights going out did nothing but kick start that street festival into high gear.

Could also be that the metallic-looking streamers that came out of that popper thing landed on the lines and closed a circuit?

Yeah... Something from the firework was responsible. The metal streamers sound like a good culprit, really.

The USA used something resembling these in the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia to take out the power grid.

I love learning about classified munitions in a Brazilian Carnivale parade thread. Knowledge will come up on you when you least expect it.

I don't normally have these thoughts but why do I feel as if taking over the country of Brazil would be incredibly easy? I'm not even really in the mood to take over a country but dammit, I may have to act on this one.
