/ POPCORN! Get your popcorn here!

He's not being racist, dummy. He's being a bigot.

Has anyone ever seriously claimed that black people can't be racist? I could see someone saying that black racism against white people was different because of the power imbalance, but claiming that a whole race of people can't be racist would be silly.

Yes. Because racism is the systemic, ingrained oppression of a minority group as a cultural practice, members of that minority group cannot be racist, because they do not have the agency to effect racist oppression against other groups.

Put another way: blacks can't be racist because even if they engage in bigotry and prejudice based on racial differences, those actions simply does not have the capacity to cause harm that white racism as practiced by the predominant culture and institutions do. A black guy beating up a white guy for being white is bigoted and awful, but not racist, because the system will support the white man in delivering justice, care and support. In the reverse, it is extremely racist, because black guy WON'T get that same support after being beaten by whites, which is racist.

Another example to highlight this would be a white judge disproportionately punishing white defendants because he didn't like black people and though they were criminal and evil. Would we call that racist? Yes, yes we would.

A black guy saying all white people are scum until proven different because he got an unfair sentence from a white judge? No, we would not.

So yes, it is seriously argued and widely accepted that the ability of a group or person to exercise agency and power over another defines their ability(or lack of ability) to be racist. Black people by and large can't be racist in America.

Yours is a different definition than Marrian-Websters:  "Any action, practice, or belief that reflects the racial worldview-the ideology that humans are divided into separate and exclusive biological entities called "races," that there is a causal link between inherited physical traits and traits of personality, intellect, morality, and other cultural behavioral features, and that some "races" are innately superior to others."

Using this definition, an Asian who thinks her race is superior to a Whites is a racist.  It's simply her belief that makes her a racest. There is no requirement here that she's part of the "dominant race" or that her race can "exercise agency." over other races.  Your expanded definition includes these two key features and causes confusion.

You can spout anything you like here, as many folks do, but a reputable source disagrees with your un-cited assertion.

Why should we shy away from the statistics? HIV still hits the gay population harder than any other, shouldn't we be pointing this out and taking it as evidence that there is still a lot of work to be done getting the rates lower through awareness and safe sex? That's what happens--people differentiate between racism and prejudice, using the two words to highlight the power imbalance, and stupid people take that to mean that 'PC people think blacks can't be racist ha ha'. And then stupid people of color (not just blacks--I got into it with a Hispanic-descent and unknown-descent pair of friends on Tumblr because they apparently decided you cannot tell them their interpretation of Harry Potter is wrong because you're the real racist) also occasionally grab onto it.

I love stupid people.

I'm not saying we should shy away from data, and yes- EDUCATE EVERYONE. YOU are at RISK with each new partner/episode of unprotected sex.

But it's not just closeted gay men who pose a risk- It is Everyone who is irresponsible about their sexual activity. And it's not just themselves at risk, but anyone they have close contact with. And by close I mean having a possibility to exchange bodily fluids with- including your coworkers trying to save you from grievous bodily injury from killing you, etc.

A married guy on the down low can't keep a pack of condoms around if he doesn't use them with his wife. She might keep a count of how many are left, even if he does. If a few are missing that he didn't use with her, heads are gonna roll. If he hides them, she will find them. Women know what's going on. As a white guy who loves the theatre, I was getting a bit worried about how I was going to find myself a black man. But it is OK I have a VISA card not an AMEX. My wife will be relieved too.

My soap box bit:
All Blood donation clinics have a stay on any donor who is a man that has sexual activity with a man(You are NOT allowed to donate), regardless of protection used during activity. All other parties do not have to disclose their sexual activity, regardless of protection used during activity.

Gee. FDA/Red Cross, you're prejudice is showing

Not true. They also exclude anyone who has traded sex for money or drugs and anyone who has had sex with someone in a high-risk category. So if your wife lived in Africa (raises hand!) you aren't allowed to donate. If your husband is a hemophiliac you can't donate. So on and so forth.

willfullyobscure: Ant: DROxINxTHExWIND: iheartscotch: The preacher is black!?!? I thought it was unpossible for black people to be racist.

/ POPCORN! Get your popcorn here!

/ Buttscratcher!

This is taking the argument much much further than it typically is.  Racism is prejudice plus power.  A black store owner or manager can be racist in his or her hiring practices because he or she has the power to hire, fire or promote people.  Their skin color does not automatically strip away that power.

So the idea that "black people cannot be racist" is frankly a stupid statement, even by that very narrow definition of racism.

Rapmaster2000: Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: "A white homo usually has an American Express card."

Fun factoid for dinner parties.
