Homer Simpson's worst nightmare: A doughnut shop with no doughnuts.

2014-02-27 01:22:11 PM
A spokeswoman for the Y tells The Patriot Ledger that because of the organization's emphasis on physical fitness, no doughnuts will be sold. The shop will sell coffee, low-fat muffins, salads, sandwiches, yogurt, fruit cups and smoothies. All menu items must be approved by the Y.
According to Honey Dew's website, its low-fat muffins contain more calories and sugar than many of its doughnuts.

Well at least there are no doughnuts.

The secret, which isn't much of a damn secret, is that bigger objects have more calories than smaller objects of similar composition.

The muffins aren't all that different from doughnuts. They usually have less fat per gram and perhaps a bit more fiber and vitamins, but it's not an enormous difference.

The difference is that such shops ordinarily sell very large muffins, frequently with nominal portions sizes of two servings to a muffin. Two healthy(ish) servings of muffin do indeed contain more calories than one serving of doughnut.

If they were to start selling sensibly-sized muffins, or at least somehow make clear that you should eat half of it and save the other half for later, they might improve somebody's health. But since the food business has razor-thin margins to start with, they'd far rather sell you two servings of muffin at twice the price and 10% greater cost to them (since the ingredients are only a tiny fraction of the final cost, which includes everything from rent to insurance to the clerk's salary).

Don't get into food sales. It's a crummy line of work.

He sounds like a 7 foot tall guy covered in tats who ripped the lungs out of an inmate with his bare hands then took his cupcake and ate it with the still-dripping viscous soft tissue and blood remains from his fingers before being sent to solitary for 5 months.

First thing I thought of was that skit.  I loved the music that was going on in the background, then near the end, when every conceivable type of cheese had been requested, only to be subsequently denied, John goes off on the musical troupe in a tirade...

inside the city's new $30 million YMCA.

I hope they mean that in a YMCA is in their town rather than the city has anything to do with its funding.

The YMCA has really strayed from its path.    When I was a kid it was a place to swim, play racket ball and soccer and baseball and avoid the ugly naked men in the locker rooms.  I think they had vending machines for soda, but definitely not a coffee bar that belongs in a strip mall or an airport.

And as I understand it a generation or two before I was even born the YMCA actually helped people who were down and out and tried to get them back to working and living on their own.  I guess that's not as sexy as muffins though.

/Thanks Obama (oblig)
