(The Age (Melbourne))   "A China-Japan war that seemed impossible at the turn of the century, when I was living in Tokyo, has moved past being improbable to become believable. Chinese and Japanese heavily mistrust each other and their economies have begun to delink"   (theage.com.au) divider line 110

Funny when you say turn of the century I still think 1900, I completely forget there was another much more recent one.

Anyway China and Japan have never liked each other much.

There was an ACTUAL war going on in 1900.

I live in Tokyo and I've never thought a war between China and Japan was improbable, just kind of unlikely relative to DPRNK/Korea or China/Taiwan

All sides have too much to lose economically to seriously consider going to war.

This is all bluster regarding the islands that they all want.  Well, not the islands so much as the resources under those islands.

Hey Japan! It would be easier for China to forgive you if you... oh I don't know... stopped denying that massive pile of dead Chinese citizens behind you, right next to all those mutilated POWs.

I kinda figure defense of Japan will be our moral grounds for going to war with China when it looks like they really will nix the dollar as the energy exchange currency.

while his post is non-sensical, the US while not to blame, should care a lot...this could lead to war quicker than a Taiwan invasion

It probably has something to do with systematically invading, occupying, enslaving, and terrorizing the local populations between 120 and 70 years ago.

That being said, we can't move forward as a global community until past sins are forgiven. Modern Japan is not the jingoist Imperial Japan of that era.

You've got to think big picture here. We can't have ourselves a proper world war if we have to resolve every little conflict before moving on to the next.

No one in power in China gives a single fark about what happened 120 years ago.  It does give them plenty of ammunition for the PR war, though, and it makes rallying the Chinese even easier.

This is all about intimidation on the world stage.  Trying to get what they want through a mix of threatening and aggressive maneuvers and declarations.  It's just a bluff, however, and the Chinese will dial it back once someone reacts seriously.  Probably making a troll face as they dial it back.

More like Japan's father raped China's mother, and Japan keeps alternating between "That never happened" and "I'm very sorry for the cruelty inflicted on your family by mine... Psych!" So China's going "fark you! See these nice oil filled islands you say are yours? They're mine now."

Exactly this. The leaders both don't give a damn about "historical animosities". They just care that the rubes are racist against another. Makes it easier to whip up support for the struggle over those islands.

A real shooting war between two industrialized powers like china and Japan would need a much bigger impetuous: something like true global famine or complete loss of oil.

My fear is North Korea will do something stupid like test a missile, Japan will think it's the ChiComs and react militarily towards the PRC and then the ChiComs will react militarily towards Japan. All out war in Asia.

And North Korea will just whisper "oops" and skulk away.

Actual truth: "China is presently aggressively practicing naval exercises that would refine their ability to take and hold Japanese islands that they have no legitimate claim to."

FTFA: "OMG CHINA IS JUSTIFIED BECAUSE THE PM ISN'T KOWTOWING TO THE PRC WHO WEREN'T EVEN IN POWER WHEN JAPAN DID BAD THINGS A LONG TIME AGO!"

Excuse me. Seeing as how the P.R.C. is such a V.I.P., shouldn't we keep the R.J. on the Q.T.? 'Cause if it leaks to the R.C. they could end up M.I.A., and then we'd all be put out in K.P.

But the PRC invaded India and still has them stationed in or near disputed territories. They did invade when the pragmatists were out of power but still they invaded India. At least that's what the Indians say.

So I'm not sure what the PRC might do anymore. I tend to think they are trying new strategies as their standard "let's build empty cities" apparently isn't working as well for them now.

The relationship between China and Japan is complicated by Japan's refusal to acknowledge its wartime past.

I'm reminded of Aeschylus....

For the poison of hatred seated near the heart doubles the burden for the one who suffers the disease; he is burdened with his own sorrow, and groans on seeing another's happiness.

Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart.
Until, in our dispair, against our will,
comes wisdom through the awful grace of god.

This.

I'm no historian, but as I gather, due to the honor of Asian countries in general, they all tend to think that they are the single best thing the universe has yet produced.  But Japan is particularly smug in that regard.

In their defense, I think they may be right in some respects.  Food, technology, and entertainment, for a start...  They've got some of the best that Asia has ever produced.  Hell, better than most of the rest of the world in some opinions.

Does that mean they deserve to hate everyone else?  No.  But it does give them something in the way of bragging rights.

If the Japanese 'did' get all apologetic and contrite over WWII atrocities, the Chinese would just find another excuse to revile them in the public sphere.

It's got nothing to do with old atrocities and everything to do with resources, islands and a critical need for oil.

Seeing as how they fought a war in 1894-95 that would be a reasonable assumption.
