If you get upset about a non-Nazi swastika, you're helping to reinforce the idea that the symbol is for the exclusive use of Nazis. So you aren't just a silly pants-wetter, you're a tool supporting the Nazi brand.

Fasces are still used extensively in the logos of many governmental departments. It's sort of like the deal where you can name a kid Joe but you can't name a kid Adolf. Then again, any country that allows the death penalty should use fasces as a symbol.

You know, as I've gotten older, my ratio of swastika-as-Nazi-symbol to swastika-as-spiritual-symbol exposure has decreased.  I'm not sure if I'm just paying more attention to the latter or maybe pop culture has dropped their use of Nazi villains in the past twenty years or what, but the net effect is my brain has started to interpret it as a non-Nazi symbol first.

I think there's a good chance we're taking it back.  PMFL.

If someone wants to misread that as signifying that I'm Jewish I won't correct them; if they call it a Zionist emblem I'll tell them not all Jews are Zionist (and vice versa); if they ask if I'm Jewish I'll say no, NTTAWWT. If they say "Why use that symbol then?" I'll say "My name is DAVID. And anyway it's not registered as copyrighted or a trade- or service-mark anywhere, so I'm as entitled to use it as anybody."

And anyway until sometime in the last century the usual Jewish symbol in "the West" wasn't a star but the menorah:

encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com

And by the way, I dimly recall seeing photos someplace of the ruins of ancient (Roman-era) synagogues that prominently featured symbols we don't think of a Jewish these days, like the Zodiac and the swastika. They also used human images in a way that haredi Jews and most Muslims would consider idolatrous.

"The design was completed by 1939 - the year Britain went to war with Nazi Germany"

"It is understood the swastikas were added between 1928 and before the outbreak of World War 2 in 1939."

If they were added in the late 20s then no big deal but if they were added as late as 1939, then it is a big deal. (Well, not a big big deal).  Was it done by a fascist sympathizer?  A supporter of Hitler in England?  There were quite a few.  If not, then why add them?

Because people still liked the original meaning of the symbol and Hitler wasn't the Big Bad he is today? In 1939 he was merely an asshole, not a genicidal warmonger. There is no reason to drop all symbols used by assholes.

Sadly enough, though, in this case, perception is reality for many. Farked up how a symbol thousands of years of years old got turned infamous in the course of less than 2 decades. Then again, Nazis perverted many other things as well (Nietzche's writings, especially about the 'overman', and the SS using the totemkauf, which was used many many years before World War 1 or 2 even rolled around).
I doubt the swastika will ever get it's original meaning back in the eyes of the majority.
